Jerry Mac, on his blog, has been doing a quick run down of the last several drafts. While I normally like his blog, these particular pieces are so short that they seem incomplete. I don't know, I just figure if he's going to do it, he should do it right.

That said, I'm not a journalist. I'm a fan and I have the liberty to write emotionally or nostalgically if I so choose. And I do, in fact, so choose...

2004
1/2_Robert Gallery, T, Iowa - I remember saying at the time that I thought that everyone who said that Gallery compared to Ogden, Pace, or Boselli was out of their rabid assed minds. While I certainly didn't expact him to struggle as much as he has, I wasn't nearly as sold on him as a lot of people were. If I recall correctly, my pre-draft man-crush was on none other than Roy Williams, WR, Texas, for most of the build up to the draft, until I came up with a brilliant strategy to trade down into the late first and grab whichever RB fell, Stephen Jackson or Kevin Jones.

2/45_Jake Grove, C, Virignia Tech - I loved this pick because I have faith in Oakland's ability to evaluate centers and also because of Grove's reputation as being a nasty son of a bitch. I loved it even more when it came to light after the draft that the Raiders went into it knowing that Barrett Robbins' attempts to come back were permanently ended by a knee that was never going to get better. With Gallery and Grove in the first two rounds, I figured we were SURELY seeing a return to smashmouth running.

3/67_Stuart Schweigert, S, Purdue - Again, I was thrilled with the pick. I honestly didn't anticipate Schweigert falling this far. While a lot of people bag on Stu, I think he's a solid starter for us.

4/99_Carlos Francis, WR, Texas Tech - Didn't like this pick at all. Yeah, he's fast... but he's also smaller, and came from Goddamned Trailer Trash University and their gimmick offense.

5/134_Johnnie Morant, WR, Syracuse - Liked this pick, though I was cautious due to Morant's rep for "catching the hard ones, dropping the easy ones." Nowadays, I'm excited to see if Morant can't up his role and production in Kiffin's offense.

6/166_Shawn Johnson, DE, Delaware - I don't recall a single damned thing about this particular kid.

6/182_CodySpencer, LB, North Texas - Wasn't this the kid that Limee correctly predicted in the L'il Al contest?

7/245_Courtney Anderson, TE, San Jose State - I liked this pick for all the wrong reasons. Personally, I thought that with Courtney's size and speed they were going to try a patented Raider relocation experiment and play him at DE. Although Courtney hasn't turned into the kind of TE you want starting all the time, you can't say that he hasn't outplayed his 7th round status.

7/255_Andre Sommersell, LB, Colroado State - I remember liking this kid, but I can't honestly tell you why.

2003
1/31_Nnamdi Asomugha, CB, California - I remember being very, very upset by pick 31. I honestly felt that the Raiders were going to go DB here and my boy Sammy Davis, the Candyman, from Texas A&M's vaunted Wrecking Crew defense would have been perfect... had the Chargers not selected him one pick ahead of us. Still, I had us trading up in the second round of this draft to select Nnamdi and I was convinced that the kid could be a player, so I wasn't TOO pissed off.

1/32_Tyler Brayton, DE, Colorado - I recall being a bit underwhelmed with this pick from the get-go. I felt like after the first 4 DEs went in the top 15 of the draft that year, there weren't particularly any standout ends out there. To me, Brayton was no different than say, Kenny Peterson, who went in round 3 (though it did surprise me that Peterson dropped that low at the time). I recall wanting to get Anthony Adams (DT, Penn State), Boss Bailey (LB, Georgia), or Terry Pierce (LB, K-State), all of whom went in the 2nd before we picked again.

2/63_Teyo Johnson, TE Stanford - I seem to remember being pissed off at this selection, although I know a LOT of people were fans of it. The guy was too damned slow for my tastes. I remember before the draft, there was a "who do you NOT want" thread... and Teyo was one of the guys that I listed.

3/83_Sam Williams, LB, Fresno State - A very under-the-radar guy, as most people heard the name called and said, "um, who?" I was no different. That said, I defended him vigorously (and still do) when there was so much backlash against him regarding the "push ups" and his injuries.

3/96_Justin Fargas, RB, Southern California - I remember being very happy with this pick. Fargas' size and speed measurables were freakin' amazing and I honestly thought that this kid would be making the big plays that Kaufman used to make.

4/129_Shurron Pierson, DE, South Florida - Tell me, who didn't freakin' love Shurron Pierson while the Raiders had him? I remember a whole lot of bitching when we let him go.

5/167_Doug Gabriel, WR, Central Florida - Liked the kid from the word "go." I still do. And, just think, now that we go a 5th for him, we essentially drafted him for free... or something.

6/204_Dustin Rykert, T, Brigham Young - Don't recall much about him.

7/246_Siddeeq Shabazz, SS, New Mexico State - In the pre-season, Siddeeq Shabazz was playing safety against Green Bay, when the Packers connected on a deep throw to Robert Ferguson (whom I had lobbied hard for the Raiders to draft, via my double secret raiders.com logon and by passing coded messages through hawaiianboy to Willis). Shabazz just fucking unloaded on Ferguson. I mean, he just leveled the poor bastard. After I saw that, I was completely on this guy's bandwagon. Of course, he got flagged 15 yards on the play but, whatever...

7/262_Ryan Hoag, WR, Gustavus Adolphus - What I'll always remember about this "Mister Irrelevant" pick is when Chris Berman held up a copy of Kiper's draft guide and flipped to the page abotu "Mister Irrelevant." Who was the guy on the page? Yep... Ryan Hoag. I don't get as bothered by Kiper as a lot of folks do nowadays.

2002
1/17_Phillip Buchanon, CB, Miami - I can't think of anybody who wasn't thrilled with this pick. Pre-draft projections had Buchanon as a top ten talent. When we moved up to get him, it blew me away. I thought he was going to be at worst a Ray Mickens-in-his-prime type of player. Turned out, he wasn't even a low-rent version of Mickens. He was one of the very, very few Raiders that I actively hated while he was still a member of the team. Thank God for Charlie Casserly.

1/23_Napoleon Harris, LB, Northwestern - I thought for sure that Napo was going to be the guy that finally brought the heat from the outside. I was stunned when they moved him to Mike and doubly-stunned when they axed Greg Biekert (a favorite of mine for many years) to make it happen.

2/53_Langston Walker, T, California - I was really excited about this pick in this draft. Of all of our draft picks, I thought Langston was going to be the one guy who was going to shine the brightest. I had him down as the seamless successor to Lincoln Kennedy.

2/55_Doug Jolley, TE, Brigham Young - I had no idea who Doug Jolley was and i was pissed that we'd take him while Antonio Bryant was still out there.

5/147_Kenyon Coleman, DE, UCLA - I liked the pick and I remember being completely pissed off when we eventually traded the guy to the Cowboys. I still think that the guy showed some nice flashes and I still get a little irritated when I think back on it.

6/189_Keyon Nash, DB, Albany State - A guy I knew nothing about, but I have a habit of rooting for late round safeties. I don't know why it is so, but it is. Nash was no different.

6/197_Larry Ned, RB, San Diego State - I know a lot of people were high on the guy. I seem to remember him getting axed in pre-season and whole bunch of people raised hell about it. Me, personally, I was fairly ambivalent about the guy. If I remember right, it came down to Ned or Randy Jordan and I like Jordan better anyway.

7/235_Ronald Curry, WR, North Carolina - I remember laughing my ass off when this happened because I knew LordKadghar would blow a gasket. I also remember that he was a player without a position for a while. He was going to be a return guy (and I was very criticial of him in that role) and I think we tried to convert him to a DB at one point. I'm glad things have worked out for the guy

Good thread idea!

Old wounds....

You have a helluva memory too, for an older guy. : )

I am likeing the 05 and 06 drafts now though.

Gil Brandt stated on NFL.com a while back that the teams who dont use the two major scouting services (It costs 100 grand a year to be a member) are Baltimore, NE, Indy, Oakland and one other team I forget, but all are in the top half of the league in drafting quality because they use their own young employees who do their scouting reports/measurements/game film up on their own...It doesnt have to be shared etc.

That's probably a reason as to why the Raiders hit on an exceedingly weird number of late rounders, and UFA's. (Curry, Chris Carr, Huntley, Kelly, Sims, Gabriel, Boothe etc.)

Take a look around the league, and guys like Kenyon Coleman, LaRoi Glover, Grady Jackson, Barton and Rod Coleman are having great careers as late finds by the Raiders...

The article was about how good the Ravens are at drafting, but it mentions other stuff, IIRC.

2001
1/28_Derrick Gibson, S, Florida State - Much to my neverending shame, I was totally and completely on board for this pick. Gibson was the consensus #1 safety that year, until Archuleta shot up the charts following the combine and private workouts. "Still," said I, "fuck Archuleta. Gimme Gibson!"

2/59_Marques Tuiasosopo, QB, Washington - I could not have possibly been more on board with this guy, although we took him earlier than I thought he would go. I, like most people, were dazzled by that game he had against Stanford, where he passed for 300+ and ran for 200+ in one game, against a ranked opponent. We all, I think, envisioned him a fantastic candidate to replace Gannon. Unfortunately, he got hurt in his first opportunity. And, by the time opportunity knocked again, we were in a system that the exact opposite of where his skill set was. Through it all, Tui was a good Raider, never complaining when a mic was in his face. I sincerely wish this guy the best. I hope Pennington's arm falls off in the preseason and Tui leads them to the AFC Championship game, where he loses a heartbreaker to the Super Bowl bound Raiders.

3/89_DeLawrence Grant, DE, Oregon State - Another cat that I was completely on board with. If I'm not mistaken, he was timed that year as the fastest DE to run at the combine. Unfortunately, ineffectiveness as a DE and a linebacker (and an admission that he just plain old didn't understand the defensive scheme half the time) led to his departure. Hell, his best game (to my memory) was against Buffalo, where he notched two sacks against Bledsoe... and then he came out after the game and admitted that his second sack came because he completely forgot was his assignment was, so he just rushed the passer. I mean, I appreciate the honesty and all but... damn, man.

5/158_Raymond Perryman, SS Northern Arizona - Yet another late round DB that I quickly formed a man-crush on. Yet another unrequited love.

6/184_Chris Cooper, DE, Nebraska-Omaha - Never heard of the guy at the time. Honestly, I still like the guy. He's what Tyler Brayton was SUPPOSED to be. Non-stop motor. Trouble was that he on 'roids.

7/228_Derek Combs, CB, Ohio State - Wasn't he a running back in college that we tried to convert to a DB, with no tangible results?

7/229_Ken-Yon Rambo, WR, Ohio State - Man, you talk about a pick that sent me to the roof. Personally, I had Rambo as one of the top ten receivers available in that draft... and then we get him in the 7th? And, further, he goes on to make some really nice plays in the pre-season? I was all about Ken-Yon Rambo. And then, of course, we released him. Reportedly, he went into Gruden's office and unloaded. Ended up signing with the Cowboys for a while but never did much of anything in games that counted... and that was when Dallas had receiver problems, if I'm not mistaken.

2000
1/17_Sebastian Janikowski, PK, Florida State - I went through the roof on this pick. Despite the fact that many, many people had clued in to the fact that we were taking a kicker, I didn't want to believe this was so. I was completely pissed off to the highest point of pisstivity.

2/47_Jerry Porter, WR, West Virginia - And the reason I was pissed off to the highest point of pisstivity was because I wanted a raw receiver out of West Virginia in round one, by the name of Jerry Porter. When we got him in the second, I wasn't mad anymore. Sure, a lot of people bitched and moaned that Janikowski was "making first round money" but it was about this point where my personal belief became, "fuck it, it ain't my money." Suddenly, I was happy with our first two rounds. Time went by, of course, and Porter has been at the center of a lot of largely unnecessary drama. I still like the guy; I just wish he'd fall out of love with the sound of his own voice. Sure, Jerry, share your opinions... with your houseguests, not radio show hosts, okay?

4/107_Junior Ioane, DT Arizona State - My joy continued with this pick as Ioane was projected as a late first round talent before a knee injury shortened his senior season. I really believed that we got a steal here. Of course, Ioane never bounced back to even remotely the monster he was in college and only hung around a few years at the back end of a DT rotation.

5/142_Shane Lechler, P, Texas A&M - If Derrick Gibson is my neverending shame, then Shane Lechler is my neverending redemption. Long before the draft, I was telling people, "This Lechler kid is the second coming of Ray Guy. He's freakin' awesome." Yes, I still like to pat myself on the back at how right I have been about that one. Also, let me just say: Gig 'em Aggies!

7/227_Mondriel Fulcher, TE, Miami - Athletic freak who never could make it as a TE, nor the "H-back" role he was reportedly drafted for.

7/231_Clifton Black, S, S.W. Texas State - Another late round safety, another man-crush. Such is my life.

1999
1/18_Matt Stinchcomb, G, Georgia - I was not at all high on this pick and I was very much in the minority. Personally, I thought that Mo Collins, drafted the year before, was decent as a rookie (though not outstanding). Also, he shoulder injury bothered me. You still cannot believe how pissed off I was when, during Callahan's regime, Stinchcomb inexplicably became our starting center.

2/40_Tony Bryant, DE, Florida State - I really liked this pick a lot. So many people got SO down on this kid, but I always thought he was decent. And then, just as he finally appeared to be breaking out as a DE for us, he jacked his neck up. I feel badly for the guy.

4/102_Dameane Douglas, WR, California - Another one that I was very, very happy with. I envisioned a reliable alternative to Tim Brown. In reality the guy never made it out of camp. He ended up signing with the Eagles and never elevated further than special teams, though.

5/146_Eric Barton, LB, Maryland - Great pick, though I'd never heard of the guy at the time. I remember how many people were pissed that he opted to go to the Jets but, hey, if somebody offers you a truckload more, you've gotta take it. NFL lifespans are generally short and it isn't like Barton broke the bank as a 5th round selection on his rookie contract.

5/153_Rod Coleman, DT, East Carolina - Although Jerry Mac lists him as a DT, he was a linebacker when we drafted him. The Raiders switched him to DT. Everyone complains when we draft people and move them, but this was a success story. When we let Grady walk, I was sure that Coleman's production would suffer as a full time player. I was wrong on that. Also, a lot of people hammer the front office for letting Coleman get away to Atlanta, but that guy was gone the second his contract was up. He said it himself: he just wasn't a "west coast" guy and wanted to be back east.

6/186_Daren Yancey, DT, Brigham Young - Don't remember a thing about him.

7/224_JoJuan Armour, SS, Miami-Ohio - I felt as strongly about JoJuan Armour as I felt about Daren Yancey. Rings no bells whatsoever, making him the rare late round safety that I didn't go nuts over.

Rings no bells whatsoever, making him the rare late round safety that I didn't go nuts over.

Heh.

My first ever message board post was about how Keyon Nash was going to be a big time sleeper, and would no doubt end up in the same sentances with Rod Woodson, Jack Tatum and company.

Whoops.

1998
1/4_Charles Woodson, CB, Michigan - Everybody who has posted with me for any amount of time knows that I'm a huge Charles Woodson homer. Love the guy, loved the pick. After watching, in 1997, my man Terry McDaniel's skills go from "pro-bowl" to "holy shit why do we pay this guy" seemingly overnight, I was dying for a defensive back and Woodson was just what the doctor ordered. His first draw? The guy who embarassed Terry McDaniels on opening day the year before with 3 seconds left to play: Andre Rison. Rison did a good job on Wood for a quarter but that was it. Woodson went to 4 pro-bowls in 4 years. While a lot of people like to scream about all the money that Woodson got being twice tagged, I never begrudged him that. The dude played out his full six year rookie contract and, despite 4 pro-bowls, never bitched or complained or threatened a hold out. I respect that. I also respect that when he came back from "holding out" of voluntary camps the first year he was franchised, he came right out and said, "you're damned right it's about the money." Man, if Woodson had been able to stay healthy, he'd have gotten (and deserved) that big payday he was after. Imagine a healthy Woodson on one side and Nnamdi on the other... damn.

1/23_Mo Collins, T, Florida - I like Big Mo a lot. I remember being glad that we moved ahead of San Fran to take him, though I was disappointed that the Randy Moss free-fall had ended a few picks beforehand. Personally, I thought he was a decent LT, though not great. After his rookie year, when Stinchcomb was drafted and he was moved to OG, he made one negative comment about it. He said, (words to the effect of) "I consider myself a tackle so, yes, I'm pissed off at being moved... but this is where the team needs me, so that's where I'll play and I'm not commenting on the subject any further." And, with that resolved, he went out with Frank Middleton and Barrett Robbins and gave us a downright dominant interior offensive line. People complained about the guy's weight and referred to "Fat Frank and Slow Mo" but I didn't care a single bit. Mo Collins will never go down in lore as "one of the greatest" but he was awfully damned good for a couple of years and Rich Gannon and Tyrone Wheatley had career renaissances behind him. I'll always remember him fondly for it.

2/31_Leon Bender, DT, Washington State - Just tragic. I don't think there was anybody who wasn't excited about this kid. Rest in peace, Leon.

3/63_Jon Ritchie, FB, Stanford - I remember thinking "what the fuck? A FB in the third?" when we drafted him but Jon won me - and all his other doubters - over very quickly. First, there was the fact that he was a pretty damned fearless blocker. Second, there was blood running down the face, which harkened back to an older time, before football gave a damn about player safety and featured brutal, voilent contact - appealing to our unacknowleged blood lust. Third, the guy had great hands. Fourth, man, talk about your colorful characters. The played his guitar and (supposedly) ate some grass from Jimi Hendrix's grave site. I think it reminded us all of the cast of characters we had on those great teams of the 70s. I hated that we let him walk when his publicly stated preference was to return to the team and I hated hearing that he jacked up leg so badly in Philly.

4/109_Gennaro DiNapoli, C-G, Virgnia Tech - What I remember most clearly about DiNapoli has nothing to do with what he did on the field. Yes, on draft day, I was excited that we took the guy... but what I remember most is that he actually held out. A 4th round pick, of all people, held out. They shaved half of his head when he finally reported and it looked like he was starting to develop into a decent lineman before we sent him packing to Tennessee. I know he played there for a while, but I didn't keep track of him that much.

5/127_Jeremy Brigham, TE, Washington - I really liked this kid and then he almost lost any good will I had for him when he freaked out and left camp. I'm thinking, "Are you serious? You play the game your whole life for this opportunity and now, with it in your grasp, you bitch out and walk away?" In the end, he came back and I thought he was a pretty doggone good player.

5/152_Travian Smith, LB, Oklahoma - Here's a guy who I never got on board with. For the first few years, I'd say, "Okay, he can play special teams a bit" but after that, my opinion of Smith was equal to the way a lot of people felt about James Jett. Specifically - "How is this guy still on the team?"

7/230_Vince Amey, DE, Arizona State - No clue.

7/235_David Sanders, DE Arkansas - Don't remember him at all.

1997
1/2_Darrell Russell, DT, USC - First off, we screwed the pooch by tipping our hand too early for Orlando Pace. Second, however, we did recover nicely by getting a very, very talented player. Say what you will about the guy, but there is no denying that the talent was there. Darrell was big and strong and cat-quick. If only he'd had a little common sense and maturity, I do believe he could have been one of the greats.

3/72_Adam Treu, OL, Nebraska - I really don't care what anybody says about Adam Treu, I'll always support the guy. Talk about your "good soldier" man, that's Treu. Any time he's been needed to start, he's stepped in and has typically done a reasonably good job. Any time they put somebody in front of him, he goes about his business. Never complains, never throws a tantrum... he just grabs his lunchpail, clocks in, and gives you a hard day's work for a hard day's pay.

3/85_Tim Kohn, G, Iowa State - I really don't recall much about Tim Kohn.

4/123_Chad Levitt, RB, Cornell - I remember thinking that Levitt was going to be a freakin' beast. I remember being wrong about that.

6/172_Calvin Branch, FS, Colorado State - You can't not love the guy now, even if he wasn't a fan favorite back in the day. And, for once, there's more to this than just my typical late round safety man-crush. How can you not love a guy who, after working in the scouting department for a couple of years, suits back up to play because we're hurting at the position? He won't make a list of "Raider greats" but I'll never think of him as less than a great Raider for that.

6/193_Grady Jackson, DT, Knoxville - To this day, I hate that Grady Jackson is wearing any other uniform that silver and black. Seriously.

That's as far back as I can go because in the years prior to that, I lived overseas and draft coverage on Japanese television was... well...

For grins and giggles, even though it is too early to conclude anything, I'll do '05 and '06 later...

Old wounds....

You have a helluva memory too, for an older guy. : )
I like to consider myself "seasoned" rather than old. I might be a little past my prime, but it's not like I went to school with CrossBones or anything...

7/246_Siddeeq Shabazz, SS, New Mexico State

I had a man crush on him too ... Didn't Mass as well?

Gotta love the name. I knew he hit like a ton of bricks in college. Is he even in the league anymore? Re-sign Ryan Riddle.

They weren't bad, but they were no Clarence Love.

Grant and Smith remind me of when we used to get to a point every season when they said they were going to simplify the defense.

I had almost forgotten about Cody Spencer. :)

I had almost forgotten about Cody Spencer. :)

Oh, Cody....he and Riddle and Rambo were all starters on the "why did we cut that guy" All Star team, never to be heard from again.

You know, it occurs to me that I credited Shabazz with a hit that Keyon Nash actually made. Ferguson came out the year before Sammy Davis did and the pre-season hit was made while Ferguson was a rookie.

And, mass, if you're making a "how could we let him go" all star team, Shurron Pierson and Kenyon Coleman have to figure prominently.

As far as undrafted free agents, I remember being overjoyed when we snatched up Marcus Ray (safety, Michigan) and Sam Sword (lb, Michigan) one year.

I thought Sam Sword was going to be a player, too. I was stoked when they grabbed him as a UDFA. Same with Tommy Kelly (Hawaiianboy was on board for that one too)... only Kelly turned out to be a real find.

Oh, and who was that outside linebacker we signed who had been working at the freakin' airport the year before, putting luggage on planes or something?

Loved that guy.

Oh, and who was that outside linebacker we signed who had been working at the freakin' airport the year before, putting luggage on planes or something?

Loved that guy.

Oh, man, I remember that guy. Wasn't that KD Williams?

Oh, and after my late round safety prospects, I love me some DTs. Who was that British kid? Loren something? I also remember some DT in the preseason, that a few Raiders met a a gym, I can't remember his name.

KD Williams had some nice Grillz, before that was ever cool.

He looked like he would stab you in the parking lot if you looked at him wrong.

I remember Josh Taves.

I thought he was going to be Reggie White.
