I was told this info shortly after the draft. We had a trade agreed upon with Philadelphia on the day of the draft. If Michael Huff was gone before our turn in the draft, we would would have traded away our number seven overall draft selection and Jerry Porter to the Eagles for their number fourteen overall, their second round draft pick, their third round draft pick and a first day draft pick in 2007.

Philadelphia eventually got who they coveted in Bunkley.

The Eagles also wanted to trade up with us in the second round to take Winston Justice.

I really don't believe Al would have traded down. But then that's just me.

For me, I think Al thought that the draft had a few blue chippers in the top seven or so. If one of those wasn't there, he might have felt that there was a couple of players available to him at the fourteen spot. With the bounty of draft picks we would have received, a kind of windfall, we would be in good shape for the future.

I agree with what you're saying, but I also have to say I'm pretty happy with our selection of Huff. Our defense is actually about one stud DT/DE away from being a legitimate squad. HOWEVER.. the offense has proven itself to be so frigging dreadful that it matters exactly shit-all nothing that our defense or special teams are solid.

Sigh.

Speaking of 'D', I hope they shut down the run so that they can turn to what they do best: Rush the QB with Burgess, Johnstone and Sapp and (presumably) create turnovers with our speedy secondary (Huff & Washington).

I think we already have the DT's. Sands has arrived, but I don't know if he's an all-game kind of talent. But he's become a monster this year. Hawthorne is an all-game talent, but he's probably another year away from bringing it at NFL level all game. I really think we're DT set.

DE? Well, Burgess is very good, but not totally an every down DE. He might get there. This season will tell us for sure. Brayton is an every down guy, but he's average to above average. Maybe Johnstone can help him out in the pass rush, who knows. But that position needs the upgrade.

I'm starting to feel some love for Hawthorne.

Roop,

I don't really disagree with what you're saying there.. but that's why I kind of vaguely specified DT/DE.. because we've got some guys like Tommy Kelly that play inside and out. I think we'd be better with Kelly at DE (instead of Brayton the sled-drill pad) and another proven stud inside. I like what I've seen from Big Terd and Hawthorne too.. so maybe we've got the guys we need, I dunno. AND, it must be said that when we weren't in a nickel D, our run defense was stout.

Yep, it took us a while to get it figured out on D, but when we did, we were pretty damned solid. This week it'll be up to the coach to get the right plays in against a more balanced offense (not that San Diego won't become a more balanced offense in the future - they just aren't now).

I think Kelly works well inside. I'd personally rather get a better guy that's Brayton's size at DE. Don't get me wrong, I liked Kelly at DE too. But his size works very well inside, probably better. That's why I lean toward getting a DE.

Brayton is better than a sled drill pad. He's at least an average DE. The problem is, I don't see the upside. Maybe I'm wrong. I'd love to be wrong. I just don't think he's got any more to give. That's why I was all for the experiment at OLB. The guy has a football motor, and lots of desire. And I like having that on the field. It just looks like he's not going to be more than an average DE. It's kinda funny that Johnstone brings as much and is lighter. Johnstone doesn't get his guy in the backfield like Brayton, but he gets off the blocker like lightning to make a tackle and Brayton doesn't. Winds up about even. In the pass rush (if we get some more opportunities) I think we'll see where Johnstone is better than Brayton. Like Isaid, I'd love to see Johnstone be able to teach him something.
