Q: Why wasn't it a fumble?
A: Because he intentionally threw the ball and so it is either a forward or backward pass. In that case, it was forward.

Q: Even though he spun the ball in front of him?

A: When he intentionally threw the ball, spinning it, it's a pass. If it lands forward of him, it's a forward pass. If it lands behind him, it's a backwards pass.

Q: Initially, the call was a fumble, Raiders ball?

A: That was the call. I misinterpreted the result of the play. I thought the result of the play was short of the line of play (first down), which would have given the ball back to Oakland. Once we got the yardage set correctly, when he threw the ball forward, after marking off a 5-yard penalty, he was still past the line of gain. So they had the first down.

Q: The 5 yards came from the point where he throws the ball?

A: Correct.

Q: How did you explain it to Art Shell?

A: Just like that. He was in the officiating department, so he understood what we were doing.

Q: Initially, did Marty Schottenheimer or someone bring it to your attention that it was more of an illegal pass than fumble?

A: We never ruled fumble on the field. The ruling was illegal forward pass.

Q: Could Art have challenged the call?

A: Whether it was forward or backward? Yes.

Q: Ever have that call before? Spinning it?

A: You mean the illegal forward pass? Yes, all of the time. I have not had this particular play everhappen to me before. It's pretty rare.
Q: What is the summary of the call?

A: He was not contacted. He got up, and he threw the ball forward. It went forward. he was past the line of scrimmage, and that made it illegal. That's a 5-yard penalty. We marked it off, and he still had a first down.

Transcription from referee Mike Carey on controversial penalty as told to a pool reporter

Fuck that guy. The only thing keeping that entire crew from being on the 'shoot on sight' list is that this game meant absolutely shit-all nothing. Had it been the playoffs.. the guy would have been dead to me.

Jackson didn't care it he spun the ball north, south, east, west, or straight up Blot fan's ass.

His intent was not to fumble the ball forward.

If Mike Carey can't recognize that then he doesn't have the mental capablility to be officiating NFL football, and he honestly belongs institutionalized.

20 seconds left in the half, team is driving, but has no time-outs remaining.
They complete a pass to the middle of the field.
Rather than fall down and have the clock run out on his team, the receiver just flips the ball forward.
Ooops .... illegal forward pass.
Clock stops, 5 yd penalty.

Sounds ok, Mr Mike Carey .... ?

Well, he'd save the team a bit, but they should run 10 seconds off the clock for the penalty and roll the clock once the ball is set. The offense would get the opportunity to re-set that they wouldn't have gotten without the penalty, but if all they needed was that one more play, they'd have bought it. In fact, if it wasn't 4th, they could spike the ball and then huddle. It only works in situations like a long pass where getting re-set prior to the clock running out would be difficult, but it would have it's uses. Put it in the playbook for later this season Art. Make a point.

Too bad they didn't ask him what his favorite team is.
Refs who have a favorite team shouldn't be allowed to work any of that team's games...JMO...but yeah, Carey is a charger fan isn't he?

Carey is a longtime San Diego resident, and was allegedly spotted wearing a Chargers ball cap at a restaurant (source: kffl poster who is a Bears fan living in SD)
