I agree that things are definitely bad in CA but they ain't great anywhere.

Don’t you wish you owned a fast food franchise in California?

$20 minimum wage gonna casuse some havoc with employees getting laid off and regular people not wanting a $15 Big Mac.

I don't want to get political, but do you all not see how insane this is?

Everything's fine?

It’s an income tax scam.

Sneaky bastards.

California is bad. I'm not far behind in NY. Fortunately, they limit alimony years but child support still goes until they are 21. I have full custody of my son. Half custody of his twin sister. They are both away at college. I still send her a child support check every month.
I'm hoping that you're only paying on the one that you share custody with. And even then, should be reduced. Too freakin weird.

I am currently only paying for the one. Not reduced because in NY whoever makes the most money is considered the non-custodial person for child support with no regard for shared parenting time.

You can still get stuck with child support payments even when it’s proven that the kid isn’t yours.
WTF? I've heard about a couple stories, but I thought it was a fluke based on some odd factoid that got them stuck in there.

Complete side note: My wife and I weren't married when my son was born. While we're in the hospital the day after, the child services called her, trying to get my info for support. She told them I was right next to her and could pass the phone over. The lady stammered and said something like, "So, he's not a deadbeat dad? Let us know if it changes."

I don’t know if it’s super common but my wife worked in family court and saw it several times over the years. Bottom line is the court can still rule that it’s not in the benefit of the child, I think most circumstances it’s a guy that originally thought he was the father and provided support based on that assumption.

Regarding your story, I had something similar. I was 20 when my oldest was born and her mother and I were married. Whoever filled out the paperwork just assumed we weren’t married and filled out the last name as my wife’s maiden name. It was a pain in the ass to get fixed.

wait wut?
happens in a few situations - generally when you were already acting as or assumed to the be parent and the "actual" parent is judgement proof for one reason or another (missing, unknown, not living in country, deceased, etc) . Certain states put the needs of a child above what would be considered "fair". Most always this is a shitty situation for all those affected by it.

Sound bogus to me! (I have no children) :)
