Mixing the pass pro up by including more short sets... using the backs as safety valves... Remember how putting Garner in the flats took the Steelers almost entirely out of their blitz packages?... doing a better job of mixing up our playcalls on first down to stay out of long down and distance blitz situations... spreading out 34 defenses by using more 3 wide sets... moving the pocket on occasion... putting some of the longer developing plays in the trash bin for now... motioning our WR's more to force the D to audible out of stunts...

We may not be able to 'fix' the O-line, but we sure can do a better job of making pass pro a little easier for them... As it is now, we're seeing a steady run blitz to the A and B gaps on first down, then a tee off to a spot on 'passing' downs...


Game balls:

* Art Shell for keeping the team energized through a hard start

* Rob Ryan for creatively mixing up his playcalling

* Huff and Schweig for finally having good games on the same day

* The rest of the D for playing with good gap control, tackling well, getting after the QB and for overcoming the lack of support from the O...

* Rich Gannon for his insights... He can fight it all he wants, but there's a hell of a coach tring to break out from inside...

Tea Bags:

* Tom Walsh: 4th game we've played like horseshit against a 34 defense and we still haven't made any adjustments in the way we're scheming them... SD's blueprint of overloading a spot and running delayed stunts against us is still as golden as it was week one...

Pulling a guard on a dive play on a 4th and short was as bad as that deep set to Jordan a few games ago... Farrior is going to come hot the second Boothe pulls since the OG is his read there... Expecting the FB to iso block that kind of immediate penetration is optimistic at best... I can see doing it if you're going to play action a short drag route to the TE....

* The entire offense save Fargas... Dogshit scheme, dogshit execution, dogshit production once again... The only game we were out of things was the Bolt game... If the offense resembles even a 20th ranked O, we're sitting on 2 or 3 more W's right now... We've been in position to put a bunch of games out of reach and just couldn't get out our own way offensively, especially in the second half...


Great win and a ton of optimism to where the defense is heading... Very little offensively to feel good about... My offseason defense of and optimism towards Walsh were just flat out wrong...

I'm going to write an apology letter to Jeff Hostetler for calling him a dick for changing the plays and protection schemes in the huddle in '94.... cc'ing Tim Brown as well...

Could very well be right, but we aren't getting jack from Johnstone or Brayton on the pass rush side. At least Brayton is playing well against the run however.

True. Kelly looked okay in the middle, so moving him outside is pointless.

Heck, maybe Huntley is the missing link?

Well, he's probably closer to that than the Pro Bowl, that's for sure.

But he showed speed and acceleration in the preseason. Made his presence felt every game, I think.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think he's Robert Mathis. But I want him to get some PT, the same way everyone wants Morant to get some PT. One guy is young, and has looked good in the preseason (Huntley, Morant), and is losing reps to a guy that isn't part of the future, and not doing much out there now (Johnstone, Whitted).

That's all. Not pimping Huntley, but I agree with RaiderIVLife, Johnstone isn't making many waves.

To be honest, Kingpin is my favorite comedy. I watched the farrely brothers comentary, and knowing Bill Murray improved 90% of his lines made it that much better.

His haircut was all him, as was the rose in the middle bowling ball...He did that all without being written in the screenplay. Genius.

Funny thing is that I still prefer Kelly at End, but it's moot since we are halfway thru this season and we only have 4 DT's on the roster. Assuming Walter is the guy in 2007, I truly think we'll go either DT or DE (best player available) in the 1st round. I can't see us taking another DB, not even Al Davis, or another O-lineman either. Of course WR & RB could make valid sense as well.

Bottom line, we have some serious holes on offense and only a player or two away on defense. What to do? What to do?

Personally, I'd rather "finish the job" on denfense. When I see Chicago's blue print, or Denvers' blue print, or Baltimore's blue print, or SD's blue print, you get my point.

I WANT a dominate defense and we are close, very close to having that.

Didn't Kelly have like 5 sacks last year at end with 3 of them being in one game? I don't seem to remember him being much of a pass rush guy last year.

I think he did have only 5 last year, but he was very stout against the run and he did collapse the LT (and the pocket) quite well and allowed Burgess & Sapp (prior to injury) to cleanup.

Besides, I seriously doubt that Brayton is going to sniff 5 sacks this year?

He's been pretty much a tease up to this point. He's had some quiet games this year.

I don't think he's the answe at RE, and have started to think he may just be a guy, part of a rotation.
 
I haven't seen it posted yet, but Fabian got his 1st career pick today.
 
And if someone told me that Scrabble would have 3 picks halfway through the season I would've laughed.

At the end of the game they showed Stu walking towards the endzone (presumably to the Black Hole) and then they stopped covering. Looks like I found out what he went to do.:)
