Report: Raiders to play in Hall of Fame Classic
Oakland would face the Eagles; safety Cooper re-signs for three years

CONTRA COSTA TIMES

The Raiders were deemed a worthy opponent to kick off the 2005 regular season. Now word has it that the NFL has tabbed the Raiders as the opponent for the Philadelphia Eagles in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Classic on Aug. 6, according to a newspaper report.

The NFL, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Raiders offered no confirmation. The report, in Friday's editions of the Express-Times in Easton, Pa., cited a release on the Eagles' Web site. However, nothing to that effect appeared on the team's Web site Friday.

The matchup makes sense given that former Eagles defensive end Reggie White, who died in 2004, and former Raiders coach John Madden are part of the 2006 Hall of Fame class. The game typically pits at least one team synonymous with a high-profile inductee. The enshrinement ceremony is scheduled for the day before the game.

The game would afford new Raiders coach Art Shell an extra exhibition game to prepare for the upcoming season. Also, it might prove beneficial if the Raiders intend to open the season with a quarterback not named Kerry Collins.

The Raiders last played in the Hall of Fame game in 1993. They also played in the game in 1979.

In other news, the Raiders re-signed safety Jarrod Cooper to a three-year contract that could net Cooper as much as $4.5 million. He joined the Raiders midway through the 2004 season and has developed into a core special teams player, as well as a key defensive backup.

Meanwhile, Raiders free-agent safety Renaldo Hill accepted a three-year, $6 million deal from the Miami Dolphins. The Raiders attempted to re-sign Hill but weren't able to persuade him to sign for less money.

Also, veteran cornerback Lenny Walls is scheduled to visit the Raiders on Monday. He signed with the Raiders late last season only to be sent packing the next day when he failed his physical.

Linebacker Anthony Simmons and tight end John Gilmore signed with the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears, respectively, after visits with the Raiders. Gilmore accepted the Bears' two-year contract despite receiving a comparable offer from the Raiders.

Finally, safety Deke Cooper visited the Raiders on Friday. He last played with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
