Raiders Salary Cap Update

I figure Russell will eat up half of that...or was that number already accounting for the rookie pool?

Either way, I for one am really glad that Al didn't spend a huge amount of money on free agency right about now.

I am as well, to a degree. I would have liked to have seen the defense addressed a little, and bringing in Tim Rattay would have been nice...although McCown should suffice for a season.

It is a good sign, however, that Al didn't attempt to do his "reload" thing this year. The guys we brought in are young enough to build with, which is smart.

I'm still itching for some help at DT, though.

BTW, have I told you lately how gay that avatar is?

Oakland's rookie pool, and I'm reaching back into the recesses of my mind for this, was somewhere in the neighborhood of $6.9 million. That would still leave the Raiders with just under $6 million to play with. Nevermind that a guy like Crockett could get cut ($2.2 million salary).

Doug Gabriel is scheduled to make $1.7 million this year. In my opinion, that is a lot of money for a receiver not in the top four. Higgins is probably as good as Gabriel right now. That we haven't restructured his contract all offseason may be a sign..in my opinion.

Trade Gabriel for another 5th-round pick!

Certainly not out of the question. The Titans put in a waiver claim for him when the Pats let him go. They've done bupkus to upgrade at WR this offseason, so the interest could very well still be there.

I'd use some of that money and show some love to DBurgess which would only really leave us to concentrate on re-working Scrabble's deal. I think management has done a pretty good job in getting a lot of our young guys re-signed while bringing in some unspectacular but solid FA acquisitions this offseason. So much for all the rampant speculation that no one wants to play here:rolleyes:

As angry as I was last year for trading Gabriel at what I thought was the worst possible time ... I'd be that happy this year if we did.

Even without Moss, our WR corps looks deeper this year than it did last year.

Porter, Curry, Higgins, Taylor, Morant, Williams, Buchanon, Francis, Madsen. Without Gabriel, we should still be able to get four guys out of that group. Plus we have Zach Miller, who is surely a better receiver than C. Anderson.

Cut Whitted, Crockett, Courtney Anderson and Lamont and we would have a ton of cap spece. Lamont can have one more year to earn the money and keep his spot. I dont think its out of the question for him to break out, but its unlikely he remains in a Raider uni beyond next season.

J.Higgins > Whitted
Griffith/Oneil > Crockett
Z.Miller > C.Anderson
M.Bush = Lamont
cut that meat!

Did anyone else catch Z.MIllers college nickname? It was "The Truth" he said he was highly touted(#1 highschool TE)and people expected him to be great when he showed up at ASU. All his teamates found out everything said about him was true, hence " The Truth". Gotta love that.

In one of AP's articles, it said he was one of only a handful of true freshman ever to start for his highschool...and his college.

And most likely an NFL team as a rook.

I liken Miller to Jason Whitten or Heath Miller. He might be the pick I was most excited about in this years draft. He won't stretch a D like Watson, Shockey or Gonzo, but he will be a great safety valve for J-Russ.

As long as he doesnt pan out like second rounders Jolley and Teyo.

Yeah, all I think about when I see that cap room is a new contract for Scrabble.

The golden days of free agency are over. Now owners are really going to have to build through the draft. One thing all this cap space could very well open up is a new era of trades (especially midseason trades)... making GM's all that much more important. Maybe one day we'll get one of those. :D

I wish that they could get these out before or during the season, rather than just prior to the next year's. It would help to try and figure out what we have available, for we amateur capologists.

A little more info on the salary cap...

This list is a great reminder to NFL players that if you don't win and your coach gets fired, it will not be long before the high-priced players will soon be shown the door. New head coaches typically rid themselves of players who were not part of the solution for the former regime. Detroit, Kansas City, Miami, New Orleans and Oakland all have first- or second-year head coaches, and are all above the $10 million mark in dead money.
