The Oakland Raiders released defensive end Lance Johnstone and offensive lineman Brad Badger on Friday. They also signed defensive back Kris Richard and defensive tackle Josh Shaw.

Lance Johnstone, a 6-foot-5 12-year veteran was let go after one season with the club. He amassed 16 tackles and two sacks in 11 games. He was placed on injured reserve in mid-December with knee and toe injuries.
Johnstone had registered seven or more sacks in each of his previous four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and tallied 72 sacks through his career.

Brad Badger saw action in seven games with the Raiders in 2006 and had been with the team for five seasons, netting 31 starts. He has appeared in 140 games over an 11-year career.

The Raiders signed Kris Richard, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers. A 5-foot-11, 190-pound defensive back, Richard saw most of his playing time in 2003 and 2004 with the Seattle Seahawks where he collected 50 tackles and a sack in 31 games.

Josh Shaw was also added by the club. He spent last season with the Miami Dolphins and has just eight tackles on his resume since entering the league in 2002.

Out with the old and in with the new. Sorry to see Badger go - he's been around a while, but Johnstone is just too old. I know nothing of the other two, but I bet the DB is fast.

Added - AHA! Here are the combine #'s for Richard:
4.47 in the 40-yard dash … 2.56 20-yard dash … 1.57 10-yard dash … 4.15 20-yard shuttle … 39.5-inch vertical jump … 10'0" broad jump … Bench presses 225 pounds 10 times … 29 1/8-inch arm length … 9 1/4-inch hands … Right-handed.
And
(drum roll please)
He's from USC (3rd round draft choice of Seaducks in 2002)

While Badger was an unmitigated disaster playing tackle for the Vikings, I thought he was a very respectable guard for the Raiders (for the most part, considering that nobody on the offensive line was "respectable" last year).

Lance Johnstone was a nice DE in his first stint here so we signed him to one hell of a contract. In the first year of his big money deal, he had a couple of injuries and severely underperformed his paycheck. We cut him loose (something I was critical of at the time) and he went on to be a nice DE for Minnesota.

From a fan's nostalgic perspective, I'm sorry to the two of them go. I wish them both the best.

I'll miss Badger and his hard work and attitude. Dude never bitched filling in at RG-LG-RT or wherever.

No room for him now though with Boothe-Carlisle-McQ-Hulsey-Grove at the G spots, his days were numbered.

We'll probably draft a developmental guy or two.

I could see us using 1 day uno pick on the O-LIne. We still need a RT and a future replacement for Grove/Simms. I would really like to see us draft Ryan Harris. He seems like he has the attitude and work ethic to get better. He would be a 3rd or 4th rounder i think?

Doug Free or Barberie (Sp) Mizzou Southern would fit the ZBS we're implementing. Both athletic types that can get out there quick. We can't keep re-working Simms's deal every year. Dude is killing us on the cap.

Agreed.

I really like Brandon Frye's athleticism.

Guys like Barbre, Satele, Denman, Harris and Free could essentially be nice pickups for the line to round out day 1.

Im not against it, but I dont know if its very likely.

With the Raiders, you never know though.

So as it stands today, we have 12 linemen who have a real chance to make the team ...

LT Barry Sims
LG Cooper Carlisle - Paul McQuistan
C Jake Grove - Jeremy Newberry - Adam Treu - Chris Morris
RG Kevin Boothe - Corey Hulsey
RG Robert Gallery - Chad Slaughter - Cornell Green

Still seems like a hole at LT to me. Love to dump Sims' and Treu's salaries. That's $3 million right there.

How many of those guys will fit the new system? Seems like we would need to do more to distance ourselves from the abomination that was last season.

People have overblown Gallery's situation.

Kiffin himself has said its an open competition for LT, and Sims would be moved there and given the oppourtunity to start.

In the mini camps I've heard they've each taken 50% of the snaps.

LT Gallery/Sims (Loser moves to RT or G)
LG Carlisle/Grove
C Newberry/Treu/Morris/Grove
RG Boothe/Hulsey
RT McQ/Slaughter/Green/Gallery

* McQ is listed as a tackle as of today. Last year he was a G. I expect him to be the 3rd tackle or '6th man' so to speak.

* Grove was apparently getting snaps at G, so I assume if Newberry wins the C, Grove goes to G.

I think more of our problem was scheme last year, rather than personnel.
We have a ton of OL, but we could use a couple more young guns perhaps...

Raiders saved 1.36 million in 2007 with these cuts.

I like to see Johnstone gone. I never liked seeing him in the game, taking snaps from a young guy that might actually be able to help down the road. Huntley in '07!!

I think If Kelly and Burgess start, and Hintley and Brayton are spelling we have a solid group. I always thought Kelly was better at DE and Burgess is the shit. Huntley can pass rush and Brayton can provide experienced depth. If Sapp and Sands are starting with Tajj backing up that is way more of a need than DE.

That is probably a DE rotation that is adequate. I'd still like to see a Day-1 DE and Day-1 DT brought in.

I think that could/would round out our defense.....

Me too. Kelly at RE is not the answer. In my opinion. We need to find out if he IS the answer at DT. He didn't look it last year.

Honestly with 4 Day 1 picks, plus the 4.1, I would be shocked if we didn't get an edge rusher, especially in this draft. DE is deeep this year.

I probably like Kelly at DE more than most, but that is not to say that an upgrade wouldn't be nice. Still, he's better than Tyler Brayton so that is automatically an upgrade just by moving him over and TB to the bench.

To me, a 4/3 defense can never have too many solid defensive lineman. Never. Let's draft 2 guys on Saturday. Please !!!

McQ played LT&RT for Weber (and played very well)... I follow the Bigsky Conf and seen him play for a few years... I won't be shocked to see him playing RT (or maybe even LT at some point) this season..

Thats how i feel too. I think he is better suited to play the DE spot because he can add a few sacks to Braytons grand total of 0 and he is stout in the run game. I think i am on board just because it takes Brayton off the field.

We've been pretty good at finding some second day gems although I'd prefer if we addressed the DE situation on the first day with someone like Anthony Spencer or Quentin Moses and then take a flyer on someone like Mkristo Bruce on day 2.

I just hope the fugg that we get a new deal worked out for D Burgess

Bingo.

Brayton will probably have a tough time even making the squad this year. Particularly if draft a D-lineman or two.....

As for Tommy Kelly, he as is stout (or moreso) than Brayton against the run and he will notch anywhere from 4-6 sacks on the season. Anyone else notice that Burgess was better in 2005 when Kelly was on the other side? I did. Kelly collapsed the pocket enough times which made life easier for Burgess.
