For all the shit RR is taking.... this is damn impressive:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/stati...ort=rat&pos=def&league=nfl&season=2&year=2007

That is a very real and legit ranking... and here's why: It has nothing to do with pass attempts.

If you look at the 2 lowest ranked teams (Fins, Broncos), they actually happen to have the fewest attempts in the entire league... thereby showing there is absolutely no correlation between pass attempts and passer rating.

The only asterisk I see is we do have a tendency to let in the big pass play as evidenced by our relatively high yards per attempt.... which is why I am so in favor of the Tampa-2.

On a side note, the two teams playing the Tampa-2 also happen to rank in the top 5 in pass defense... and dominate in every defensive statistical category... and do it with only very modest sack totals...

My hat's off to RR and the outstanding job he has done with absolutely no defensive line play this year.

If we didnt get run on every week this would feel better. Turnovers obviously play a huge part. But Rob has always had weak run D's.... Hopefully we can fix it.

honestly... since we moved stanford into the lineup at CB... the secondary has been decent... but not great. we are soooo bad against the run its not funny. and the lack of pass rush is killer. We may have one of the best back 7s in terms of coverage... but the front 4 is so bad that the rest of our D suffers for it.

I'm not buying The D hype this year. I think its a little above average but we have soooo much to improve upon its depressing.

I really don't think our run D is that far away. In my opinion we have a solid core at 2 of our 3 LB positions (which is the hardest to develop).... All we need is to get a fat ass in the middle to play alongside Kelly when he comes back... and maybe another DE against the run... I'll be stunned if we can't get a fat ass this summer. We're really that close on defense in my opinion.

I agree with SoCal's last take.
I think we're pretty close to being a legit top 10 type defense.
Two or three of the right spots filled by capable folks and we're in business.

3 DL people to put next to burgess... or guys that can wave and be healthy with Sands/Kelly. But they need to be legit.

to run the tampa-2, you gotta have solid DTs that can stop the run, or prepare to be gashed

right now, the scheme we have been TRYING to run is more of a "man-2" type of thing, but the lack of run-plugging up front has made us bring Huff up to the line constantly leaving us with more of a "rover-1 deep coverage"

and when Huff isnt in run support, he is left covering TEs man to man, leaving us with a man-1 coverage

so in order to run that tampa 2 defense that everybody covets, we have really got to get some DLineman that can plug some gaps inside and commit to the scheme

all that said, i agree that we are a few players away from being real good on D

if we can get a stud NT and a good RDE, this defense would be nasty

Thanks Rob Ryan.

The Raiders also rank:

30th in the league in rushing yards per game against;

32nd in the league with an ATROCIOUS 5.1 yard per carry against.

32nd in the league with 12 rushing TD's against.

31st in the league with 4 fumbles forced. (And NONE recovered)

Congratulations to Rob Ryan for continuing to place us in the bottom five teams against the run every year.

Good stuff bro... and in a division where we face guys like Gates and Gonzales four times a year we've been very lucky that Huff has been able to keep those guys in check.

We're screwed.

Amen.

Yes it is. :banghead:

You're on a roll brotha. I'm with you. Rob Ryan isn't gettin' it done in my view. Sure he's stuck with a lousy DL but that's where I think he's deficient -- he hasn't done anything to mix it up. We're trying to get it done with our front four for the most part and they suck. If we can see that from the stands and our DC can't come up with anything better than the "sticks" defense or whatever he called that abortion in one game this year then fuck me. :banghead:

When your front 4 can't even get off the snap... there's nothing more a coach can do. What do you want him to do? Put Sapp at DE and Burgess at Nose tackle? Maybe he should just start 7 linebackers instead?

All a coach can do is put his players in a position to succeed.... but you have to get the players first... and the Raiders haven't had that since Ted Washington left. Blaming RR is as ridiculous as calling out Kiffin because his QBs suck monkey balls. It's not Kiffin's fault that he has no passing game and it's not RR's fault that he has no run defense.

What I'm saying SoCal is since we're getting zero pressure from the front four it's up to the DC to try something else. Send a backer or a corner on a blitz...something. He's rarely done any of that and I'm sure it hasn't gone unnoticed by opposing coaching staffs when they review game film. We always do the same thing. It's a convenient excuse but it's getting old. We need some imagination from the DC especially since he's lacking talent.

Congrats Rob Ryan! You've coached yourself out of headcoaching consideration with your performance!

We appreciate it!

Are you talking about run defense or pass defense? A corner blitz does nothing to stop the run. We've blitzed Morrison several times in run blitz situations with mixed results. There's not a single adjustment or alignment RR can devise to hide our pathetic DLine.

I'm talking about the pass defense and the Raiders inability to get any pressure on the QB. That leave our corners venerable...We blitzed Morrison several times? That's my point several times in 8 games. Not enough. And I'n not sure Morrison is the best choice to use as a blitzer. Why not devise a more unique way of getting to the QB...including corner or safety blitzes once in a while. You know what I said before is really the truth. We have so many problems on this team we don't know which way to turn.

The run defense is a whole separate thread. :o

I don't really see what the big deal is about our pass defense.

First of all, every RB we face is up for offensive player of the week, guys like Ron Dayne and Lendale White running 50 yard sweeps on us. Secondly, we've got 2 great coverage LB's and a secondary chocked full of more top picks than probably any other in the league.

I don't see where Ryan is adding anything to the mix here, and anyone praising our defense or the job Ryan's put together, getting pushed down the field in crunch time pretty much every week, or consistently giving up first downs on 3rd and 20 for instance, is just wishfull thinking IMO.

Well I'm sure as hell glad you're not our defensive coordinator... otherwise teams would be scoring 100 pts a game on us. Your cutesy corner and safety blitz schemes don't work. Great blitzing defenses like the Steelers primarily blitz with their LBs.

How about our pass defense on third and long...pitiful. We can't get off the field. If the RB isn't kicking our ass as soon as we get in a third and long we give up the big pass play over and over and over. And that has a lot to do with our inability to devise something to apply a little pressure on the QB. At least that's what I see going on out there. Clearly it's not going to happen rushing four 98% of the time.

It's one of the very few bright spots on this team. That's a big enough deal for me.

Every player starting in our back 7 is in his rookie contract. That's some amazing shit right there. Tells me somebody is doing a hell of a job developing draft picks. When was the last time in Raider history we had an entire back 7 made up of starters in their rookie contracts?

Remember the playoff game way back when when the DC devised the corner blitz to destroy Ken Stabler. Worked pretty good because they weren't expecting and getting the same thing play in and play out. Doesn't have to be every play...has to be changed up...backers, safety etc. That;s another reason why Ted Hendericks was so effective. He roamed the LOS and the offense never knew where he was going to come from.

All you're saying is there is nothing Rob ryan can do. So we'll just take our medicine and continue to do the same thing until we get a better result?
