Although a strained shoulder limited his performance in the bench-press drill, University of Maryland offensive tackle Jared Gaither likely cemented his status as a player who will be chosen in Thursday's supplemental draft by turning in a solid overall workout for league scouts Monday.

The audition, which took place on the Maryland campus, was attended by representatives from about half of the NFL's 32 franchises. Atlanta and Jacksonville, both of which have indicated interest in Gaither, had multiple scouts at the workout.

One scout from an AFC team termed the workout "probably a little better than what we expected." Another AFC scout said Gaither "almost certainly" will be selected in the summertime lottery, which is limited to special-cases players and includes 10 prospects this year.

Gaither essentially went through a combine-style workout, which included positional drills that were run by an Oakland Raiders representative.
He was able to do only 15 repetitions on the standard 225-pound bench press, having slightly injured his shoulder last week while preparing for Monday's audition.

Scouts clocked Gaither, who checked in at 6-feet-8¾ and 324 pounds, at between 4.98 and 5.14 seconds in the 40-yard sprint. He posted a vertical jump of 31½ inches, a broad jump of 9 feet, 3 inches, a short shuttle of 4.49-4.53 seconds and a cone drill of 7.12-7.25 seconds. The short shuttle and cone drill are change-of-direction drills.

Of the 42 offensive linemen who ran the 40 at the combine in February, only four posted faster times than Gaither's. And only six of the 37 linemen who participated in the vertical jump recorded better efforts.

Gaither did not decide to make himself available in the supplemental draft until less than a month ago, when his efforts to regain academic eligibility in the Terrapins' program fell short. His application for the supplemental draft was not approved until this week, so Gaither did not have much time to prepare for a workout.

A starter in 17 of his 23 appearances for Maryland over the past two seasons, Gaither might challenge Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver for top billing in the supplemental draft. In addition to Oliver and Gaither, the consensus seems to be that Nebraska offensive lineman Chris Patrick is the only other player with a viable shot of being selected.

Any team that chooses a player in the supplemental draft must forfeit its corresponding pick in the regular-phase draft in April 2008. It must also fit the player into its 2007 rookie pool allocation when he signs a contract.

Blessed with great size, Gaither has surprisingly quick feet and is regarded as an outstanding pass protector, a blocker who might project as a left tackle at the professional level. In 2005, Gaither did not surrender a sack in his 11 starts. He did not play as well in 2006, but remains an intriguing prospect.

Agent Kevin Pompey said before the workout that his client isn't as concerned with where he is selected as much as he is getting settled in with a team and getting prepared for his first NFL training camp.

"With the draft, we'll let the chips fall where they fall," Pompey said, "and then Jared will be ready to move forward with his career."

Nice.

Just for perspective here are the combine results for the other OT's.

Find out how he measures up here

He looks like a solid late 1st rounder to me, or maybe early second by his measurables, but he'll get docked some points for the academic ineligibility issue. 3rd rounder will likely get him and we don't have one.

He appears to have good agility. Gallery's cone drill netted him 7.43. His strength is kind of an eye opener though.

The dude is 21, and running 5.0 flat at 6-9 325?

Sign me up.

We have some big strength coaches to teach him up if we red shirt him a year...

After Workout, Jared Gaither Looking Like Mid-Round Supplemental Draft Pick

Michael David SmithPosted Jul 9th 2007 4:12PM by Michael David Smith

Maryland offensive tackle Jared Gaither, who will be available in Thursday's NFL supplemental draft, had his workout for NFL teams today, and the results were mixed. DraftHeadquarters.com files this report:

Gaither check in at 6-feet-8¾ and 324 pounds. He ran between 4.98 and 5.14 seconds in the 40-yard sprint. He posted a vertical jump of 31½ inches, a broad jump of 9 feet, 3 inches, a short shuttle of 4.49-4.53 seconds and a cone drill of 7.12-7.25 seconds. He was able to do only 15 repetitions on the bench, having slightly injured his shoulder last week while preparing for Monday's audition.

John Clayton of ESPN reported that 16 teams showed up to Gaither's workout, which is a bit of a disappointment; Clayton's colleague Len Pasquarelli reported beforehand that most teams would be there. Clayton says the Jaguars are particularly interested in Gaither's services. They can probably get him for a fourth-round pick in the 2008 draft.

ID drop a fourth round pick on this guy, but nothing higher. Thats only because i feel like we still need help on the line.

Latest rumor I've heard is that Atlanta is hot for Gaither and might be willing to part with the Texan's 2nd rounder...

Would we undercut them and give up ours to secure a tackle?

I gotta say a OL of:

Henderson
Gallery
Grove
Carlisle
Gaither

Is intriguing.

That is probably how I feel too, BT.

If his strength is low due to the shoulder injury, then that is fine. Taking on another developmental player on the offensive line doesn't bother me as much. When you are ninth or tenth on the offensive line, most of the times you are going to be comparable or just a little bit better than the rookie. In other words, I think Mario Henderson and Jared Gaither may play comparable to what we would have that far down the depth chart, in my opinion.

So...like...how does an 8' guy cut block?

Well we dropped a second on Langston Walker a few years back didn't we ?Gotta be intrigued by that 40 time as I'm sure Cable and Co are. I agree with the consensus, red shirt him for a year and have him ready to go full tilt in 2008.

So...like...how does an 8' guy cut block?

I wouldn't hold off on drafting the guy just because he's doesn't fit the cut block profile. No guarantee this cut blocking scheme is going to last any longer than the last one, two, or five offensive schemes. For what it's worth, I'm not sure Russell is the poster boy QB for a WCO... but that wasn't justification for not taking him.

You watch, the Chargers will grab him to pair with Marcus McNeil just to give me the red ass...

All those combine-like numbers are fine and everything, but to me all that matters is he has shown NFL level ability to do two things: 1) Handle speed rushers very well 2) Pull and seal the outside on running plays...

I doubt we do it, but the chance to get a premium talent at a premium position is worth taking the risk on... The talent upside balances the reasons he is in the Supp draft to begin with IMO....

...or maybe I just have a thing for big, tall black men with great feet...

I wouldn't be mad at a 4th rounder, but I have a feeling we'll shy away. We've added some guys on the line, there's a lot of youth there, and I wonder if the staff is really looking to bring in a guy that may be seen as a project with question marks. However, I am encouraged that his coach at Maryland seems to still be in his corner.

I don't seem to look at it as wasting a second rounder.

I fully assume (Even if the line plays adequately) that we would address the line next draft...A second rounder for a guy with his skillset is a potential bargain.

I welcome the thought of having a group of guys like McQ, Gallery, Grove, Henderson, Booth and Gaither getting a year in Cables system.

We've done worse with our second rounders, and knowing our team, we could always aquire more picks come '08 draft time.

The thought of the guy turning into a dominant RT is very intriguing for me...

I've got a weird feeling that both Oliver and Gaither end up in the AFCW somewhere.

They both fill needs for nearly all the teams.

I would not use anything higher then a 4th on Gaither, Maybe a 3rd. We could use him for the future. Not sure if he makes any impact this season.

I'd be "ok" with a 4th, but nothing lower. A 5th would be my preference.

Look, the guy has all the physical measureables you want but he's soft in the head. If there were a defensive lineman available with similar measureables and history of play, then I'd be more inclined but the dude flunked out of school and, it seems to be conveniently forgotten in discussion, he had a very pedestrian '06 season. '05 was the year he really shined. So we want a drop out playing RT or LT and knowing line audibles, blitz pickups, and protecting our soon-to-be $65 million dollar QB?

It seems to me like we already have a line full of guys with similar qualifications... only they finished school. Some people may not think his being unable to do well in school is a big deal, but I disagree completely. The last guy I can recall that we drafted high who was dumber than a box of rocks was Derrick Gibson (Wonderlic score of 9). How'd that work out?

I want a player who's serious about his football career, is intellgient, and dedicated to the game and his team. If Gaither were a 3-time All American then I might be able to overlook his intellectual deficiencies... but his play last year was not inspiring.

All that being said... I'd drop the 5th on him but would begrudgingly use the 4th if need be. He's about in John Bowie's league for me right now.
