Raiders Cap Number

Just to add a little to the discussion, here's a tidbit I heard:

Bengals | Team likely to place franchise tag on J. Smith

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports the Cincinnati Bengals could place their franchise tag on DE Justin Smith, which would cost $8.6 million.

Cheers YodasBeast, I just can't rely on some of these other clowns to keep me up to date.

Well, I like to keep my brothers on the other side of the pond abreast.

For the sake of this discussion only, and with no intent to suggest the following players are even on the trading block, let's take a look at Raiders wide receivers Randy Moss and Jerry Porter. Oakland should have about $6 million of cap space if they stand pat with the roster. Moss is scheduled to count for $11.7 million on the 2007 cap. His salary is going to be $9.75 million and if he were traded, the Raiders would get back the $9.75 million of space minus any outstanding potential accelerations. Moss' accelerations are only $2 million, so the net of trading Moss for the Raiders would be a salary-cap gain of $7.7 million.

The Raiders may want to move Randy Moss, but they could have trouble finding suitors.
The question in this transaction will be more about the club who might have interest because they are not going to want to pay a $9.75 million salary and they may not want to spread his money out for an extended period of time. A team like the Packers, with $24 million of projected space, could absorb the contract. Compensation back to the Raiders is a whole other story, and at this point a first-round pick seems a little high to most GMs I talk with.

Porter, the other Raiders receiver, presents a different set of problems. He's scheduled to make $1 million in salary in 2007, which is appealing to a number of teams. But his potential accelerations add up to $4.3 million and that means if the Raiders trade him, they will actually take a salary-cap hit of $3.3 million. With $6 million of space they could handle the trade, but from a business sense they might be better off trading both receivers if the compensation was fair. Moss creates $7.7 millions of cap space and Porter costs $3.3 millions, so in the end Oakland could realize $4.4 million of space and a couple of decent draft picks or players.

While the Raiders would save $7.7 million in salary cap space to cut or trade Randy Moss, they'd take a cap hit to move Jerry Porter.
Oakland would be best served to give Porter another shot at his $1 million salary, then if he goes in the tank, get rid of him in 2008, a "void year" in his deal. Moss is much more likely to be dealt or even released.

This is a pretty in-depth interview on 2/15 with Al Lackner from Ask The Commish.com about the Raiders Salary Cap for 2007. The interviewers are kinda doofs, but he talks about it for over 20 minutes. Lackner says they are 7 million under now, but....

Biggest hits to their cap - All due in March -

11.75 million Moss (cap hit of 4 million to cut or trade)
7 million Jordon (cutting him still costs 5 million)
6.75 Million Brooks (release costs less than 1 million)
6.53 Curry (incl. 5 million option bonus that can be converted to a signing bonus (pro-rated over the length of the contract) if they can sign him long term)
5.85 Sapp
4.85 Burgess

They also go into the potential salary of the #1 draft pick... (estimated at about 60 million for a 6 year deal for Jamarcus Russell with up to 30 million guaranteed) but the 2007 hit would be between 3-5 million.

To me the biggest stumbling block to drafting the JaRussell is going to be the guaranteed money Al is going to have to lay out which easily will make him the highest paid Raider ever.

We're in a catch-22 with LJ unless he's willing to re-work his deal and what complicates matters even further is his injury status. Brooks and Moss are all but gone so that gives us a nice cap savings there. I'd like to see us sign Curry and Burgess to extensions and re-work Sapp's deal.

Just in case you missed it, the chump Jerry Porter just changed his number from 84 to 81...

Pissed me off.

Timmy's number should have to be earned...Not after a one catch season.

That's one big, BIG jersey he's putting on. Let's hope he starts playing more like #81 and less like #84.

Does that $6M number include the signings of Sands and Thomas?

Moss goes. We net $7.7M in space.

Curry restructures. We save maybe $4-5M in space.

Sapp, Burgess, Porter and Jordan stick.

That puts us at a possible $19M under, assuming the original $6M number is correct.

What about releasing Sims? Brayton?

I saw another article about 2-3 weeks back that had us somewhere around $14M under already. That was before the resignings, but I can't imagine that they took up that much space.

Frees up roughly $5.5 million when you subract his roster bonus and salary but then add whatever scrub moves up into the 53-man count for salaries that count against the cap.

Honeslty, if we can get an O-lineman or two, that'd be great, but priority #1 is to extend Scrabble, and give him a big fat roster bonus, that won't count on future caps.

This is the year to do it, plenty of cap space, and a weak FA crop.

Agreed, I'd also like to get Burgess locked in before he starts commanding Freeney like money. I wonder if Sapp will be willing to work out a cap friendly deal as he's due nearly 5 mill next season?

So, uh...

We're 14 mil under, adding the 5.5 mil we saved from Brooks, right?

Even including Sands and Thomas, we have at least 10-15 mil in wiggle room come March 1st...

We better lock down Asomugha and sign some lineman in that first week, or I'll be pissed. ;)

I agree that it's a good year to upgrade 'Mug' and Burgess now. The more I think about, the more I DON'T want to make a big spalsh in FA, i.e, overpay. This is a year of rebuild/evaluation for Kiffin & Co. and big cash can be spent next year.

Yep. The writing is on the wall with the Gurode signing, and Redding getting franchised. B players are going to be making A money.

Now we do have to spend 85% of the cap, so I am sure we'll grab some FA's.

But I don't want to see a big deal for Leonard Davis, who is going to get top 10 tackle money from someone. Or some of these other crappy players.
