Between Moss, LJ, Brooks, Sims, Walker we should easily be able to lop off another 20 mill.

Actually, between just Sims and Brooks, they'll get another $8M bump.

The only issue with the 20+ million in cap space:

EVERYONE has it.

No top tier FA's will want anywhere near us, IMO.

We'll be lucky if we land guys like Dielman, Jurevicius, Hamlin and Najeh Davenport.

Scary thing is those figures for all the teams are already high and a lot of them just like us can probably free up an additional 20+ million with very little effort.

That's why we're not going to get into a pissing match for guys like Steinbach, Dielman etc.

Get a few middle tier OL and build some depth through the draft.

Exactly the problem. Put yourself in that position. You're Steinbach and can go to Chicago or Oakland for about the same money. Watcha 'ya gonna do? Duh.

We are in such need of vet lineman i think we could overpay someone and steal them a la Sapp. Dielman would be a great pick-up. I think if we make it our #1 priority we can get one of the top 5 guys. Money talks and California isnt the worst place for a free agent to move.

We "stole" Sapp from the Bengals. There were only TWO teams after Sapp. We're OK winning those battles. Its the ones were guys have 10+ teams pursuing them that we have trouble.

Not to mention Sapp was on the wrong side of 30 and his skills had diminished some since his All-Pro days.

Steinbach's 27 or 28 and is just hitting his prime. He's going to command, and in all likelihood, receive Steve Hutchinson money given the influx of cash in the FA market.

I'm almost of the mind to be selectively aggressive with FA's for the next 2 yrs and let some teams hang themselves with the salary cap.

I don't think Al makes a BIG SPLASH in FA this year...I think he plays the same card as the last two years and it looks like he is trying to build through the draft. He'll do the typical 1 maybe 2 guy move who is not necessarily a BIG TIME name guy. I could see them possibly making a move for a Justin Smith or Simeon Rice who would be mid tier money in my eyes. If we land any BIG TIME guys it will be through a trade involving Randy Moss and draft picks and I don't see that happening either.

I also have a feeling with the approach that Kiffin has taken thus far that we will see some unexpected cuts kind of in the Mike Nolan "mode" of, you're a big time guy making big time money, but you're not making big time plays... C YA. One of the first things he mentioned as being named coach was getting the balls into his playmakers hands and finding people who want to play. Well we have quite a few players not making plays or showing half ass efforts, the axe is being sharpened.

Cap space doesn't mean much if we don't have the capital to back it up. I just hope that having it is enough to sway Al into paying the cost to draft number one.

Justin Smith would be a fantastic pick-up. He is a great run stuffer as well as a lock for 7 sacks.

I pretty much agree with this. I think Year One in of the Kiffin regieme will be one of laying the foundation for the future (scheme, attitude, ....Demarcus Russell?) and of evaluation. As much as Leonard Davis, etc. would be attractive, I think we retain our $$$$$$ in 2007, grow a bit, and make the real push in 2008. By then Russell (or Andrew Walter) will be ready to lead this team to the playoff's and beyond.

Frankly, it might the wise approach. Another reason why Moss & Porter should GOOOO in my opinion.

Anyway, I've been calling for Justin Smith since mid-season so don't steal my damn Thunder dude.

Big dark skies....the thunder is heard and then it disappeared? :p You can have him as your claimed savior....J/K

Fine with me. I'm not sure we can't get the same production at RE from Brayton and Huntley.

As long as we can get a real committment from Huntley this offseason he could become a solid contributor to the defense.

By committment I mean the kind defined by Fred Shero, Ex-Coach Philidelphia Flyers "When you have bacon and eggs for breakfast, the chicken makes a contribution, but the pig makes a commitment."

:D

Well, consider that line stolen.
