Raiders Add Schneider, Fuller
February 13, 2007

Brian Schneider has joined the Raiders as special teams coordinator.

The Oakland Raiders have added to its coaching staff Brian Schneider as special teams coordinator and Curtis Fuller as special teams quality control assistant.
"Brian has had success with special teams everywhere he has been in his career and I'm very confident in his abilities," said Raiders Head Coach Lane Kiffin. "We interviewed a number of candidates for this position and Brian always remained our number one choice. Solid special teams play needs to be a signature of this football team and both Brian and Curtis will work together to make sure that this happens."

Most recently, Schneider was as an assistant coach at the Air Force Academy in 2007 after spending the 2006 season at Iowa State, where he coached the tight ends and special teams for the Cyclones. Prior to his stint at Iowa State, Schneider spent three years (2003-05) as an assistant coach at UCLA where he coached the linebackers, safeties and special teams.

In 2005, several of Schneider's UCLA special teams units ranked among the best in the nation-punt returns, kickoff coverage and net punting. Maurice Jones-Drew led the nation in punt returns with an NCAA-record 28.5 average, including three touchdowns. He also coached the safeties in 2005. In 2004 under Schneider, UCLA punt coverage and punt return teams led the Pac-10 Conference and ranked fourth in kickoff returns and blocked six kicks.

Schneider coached tight ends and coordinated the special teams at Colorado State for six seasons, with the Rams excelling in special teams play. He coached eight all-conference special teams or tight end performers. Colorado State ranked among the national leaders in 2001 and 2000 in net punting. Schneider spent three seasons (1994-96), as a graduate assistant coach at Colorado State, working with the team's defensive unit and special teams prior to moving to full-time status in 1997.

Curtis Fuller joins the Raiders as special teams quality control assistant.

The San Diego native was a three-year starter and four-year letter winner for the Rams as a linebacker from 1990-93 and is regarded as one of the finest players at his position in Colorado State history. As a senior in 1993, he was named first team all-conference and was an honorable mention All-American. He was a second team all-league choice in 1992. Schneider still ranks among the school's career leaders in total tackles.

Fuller played defensive back in the NFL from 2001-2004 for the Carolina Panthers, Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks. He most recently worked in the scouting department for the Dallas Cowboys and also assisted at Texas Christian University, his alma mater. In addition, Fuller was defensive coordinator at Forth Worth Christian High School. Fuller was an all-conference performer at TCU and was a fourth round pick by Seattle in 2001.

Haven't heard of either of them, but it sounds like these are all Kiffens' guys. That alone is a positive.

They seem to be doing a fine job of mixing "bright young" coaches with former players that were solid (but not star level) players on the college and/or NFL level.

Knapp and Cable were great because we know there are some good NFL guys here. Not to mention Ryan.:D

Brian Schneider's DVD

This was an interesting find.
Apparantly, Brian has made a DVD: Getting the Most from Your Special Teams Practice. He made after UCLA while he was at Iowa (missed Hollywood, eh Brian? Welcome back to California). At the link (http://www.championshipproductions.com/cgi-bin/champ/FD-02323.html) there is a sample clip from the video in which he goes over punt coverages.
The guy seems to know what he's talking about, but it is his DVD.

I think Jackie Slater had a DVD too...just for perspective.

But, yeah. This is interesting to say the least. It really looks like Al is going to let this guy sink or swim on his own. Can't get mad about that.

Word on the street is both coaches were asked for ID when buying Milk. ;)

Damn we have some young bucks on our staff. They should breathe some fire into our players, lets now hope the know what the F they are doing. Although Ted Daisher was as firery as they came. Remember him challenging players to a fight last year? Damn nut job. Good luck in Cleveland although he did take our special teams up a notch from the "Back to the future professor."

While our KR coverage ranked near the top of the AFC, our ST coverage units blew chunks. It's like a broken record. How many times did we score only to have the opposition return the ensuing kickoff to midfield or better?

:D It's a shame that run run isn't still around to make sure they have enough towels to keep them from being too wet behind the ears.

Not that many, but only because we didn't score much.
