I dug up this article today. It's about Gallery, and the shuffling on the line and his coaches etc.

Now, coming out he was a top rated OT, possibly THE top rated OT of the last decade...

Adding to that, he was a solid rookie who turned out to be a hard working soldier...

Now the question: Can his career be salvaged?

Is talent the issue, is it coaching, scheme or a big time combination.

People who know me, know I LOVED that pick and still think he's got the talent and athleticism to be a solid LT.

Chime in, because I want to know.

If all these good things we're hearing about Cable come to fruition, I think Gallery's career is still salvageable although I don't think he'll at the pro bowl level we thought when we first drafted him. Sure, he's been moved around and has had numerous coaches but sooner or later some of his God given skills have to come into play, especially if you're the second pick in the draft. He has flashed some ability at times which I can't say about Grove.
This is going to be a make or break year for Gallery IMO.

If we keep the current coaching regime for at least two years, I think we'll stop hearing much bitching about Gallery in virtual Raider land. The guy does have talent, but he hasn't had any consistency in his stay here, which is pretty much a killer for any offensive line. You must have consistency in players and scheme for everyone to gel and for the blocking scheme to be so second nature that they aren't thinking about it, they're just doing it.

Gallery is a great RT, average LT.. I dont care what kinda blocking scheme Art had, thats irrelevent when its basically, "Block the guy trying to go around you"

He was great in college but aint cutting it at LT, doesnt mean we blew a pick.. RT's are very important too.

I think Gallery at 26 is still young enough to turn it around. He played well at RT and he also looked pretty nice playing guard his rookie year. Last year was pretty bad but the offense was pathetic not just him. He has had many different coaches and positions and nobody to mentor him on that line. I think Gallery needs to line up at the same spot with the same coaches and the same guard next to him and he will eventually become what we thought he was. He has the size and skills, those didnt go anywhere. It seems to be mental IMO. He is almost gunshy and scared to make a mistake. He seems like he wants to get better and is frusterated as we are. He might not be the monster we thought we were gettting when we drafted him, but i also dont think he will be a bust like everyone is saying now. He could be a pro-owl RT and possible with a good offense and coaching staff maybe a future pro-bowl LT. Age 26 and a ton of upside and exp.

The cocksucker better get a haircut. He looks like hell. Maybe that would get him in the right frame of mind. And I'd like to see him raise his voice one and let the Nation know he's damn pissed off.

OK after all that, I think he has talent and that the coaching staffs the last three years have screwed him up no end. He doesn't know whether to shit or go blind. So we went blind.

Perennial All Pro? Probably not but above average is what I think he can become.

Just imagine what we'd be saying about him if he played for the Chiefs.

Yeah, I'm not ready to cash it in on him, he was a #2 pick, you've got to try and at least make him serviceable.

We'll see how much of last year was bad coaching. I hope it was as much as I think it was.

I just got done watching the first disc of the "History of the Raiders." Watching guys like Snake, Alzado, Hendricks, and Belitnikoff...

And then I logon and see Crossbones suggesting that Gallery needs a haircut to be a successful Raider?

Oh my...

Gallery, boy, you're no Ken Stabler...

Wait a damn minute. You're not comparing Gallery's persona with the likes of Ken Stabler, Matuzak, Hendericks or Alazado are you? Those MFers can wear their hair anyway they want. They're mean mofos. Gallery? Do the math.

BTW, I was watching that DVD just the other day. I watch it at least once a month or so and every week during the last three seasons just to keep my sanity. It's great isn't it.

Gallery interview from another thread.

My favorite comment:

"I don't even count last year as a year at Left Tackle, I know what I can do, and what I need to improve to be successful."

-When asked if he agreed with news people saying he's better suited at RT.

Gallery sucks, but I try and think about Linc, he was a something of a dissapointment in Atlanta so maybe things can still work out.

He was very good at RT though and people seem to forget that. He also played pretty well as a rookie at guard. I see it:

1. Rookie year at new position, C+
2. Soph. Year at RT, A he gave up only two sacks.
3. Year 3 at LT. D- Can still run block but he gets beaten by speed rushers many times. Penalties also a problem

That's one ok year, one great year and one lousy year. I think considering the whole damned offense stunk last year it may have had more to do with coaching. He needs to man up and play with confidence but it seems like Kiffin is a motivator who can get these guys to work. Cable and Knapp should be more than happy to take a guy like Gallery and make him into a pro bowl T. Remeber Gallery used to be a tight end so he can move and he's very tall and big for cutting.

Isn't this like the 3rd year in a row that he's said something alone the lines of "This blocking scheme best fits my abilities"?

Shoulda had Sapp and Middleton scout this guy. They had him pegged from the very beginning.

What motivates players to play harder is success on the field. After a huge run the O-Line gets pumped and starts playing with an attitude and pushing the defense around. We didnt have enough success to bolster the confidence of our young line. Everybody was shook and or learning a new position. This year Cable will have these guys playing as a unit. Knapp and Kiffin will move the ball and everybody will get on board and work harder and smarter. Last yer was a fucking debacle, I love Art but him and Walsh looked like a trailer for lost, cause knowbody had a fucking clue what was going on. You put Andrew Walter in his first action, minus Porter before the season starts, move Gallery to LT for the first time. Start two rookie guards next to a young C still learning a new offense. Then you line up L.Walker on the outside to watch DE's go flying by. Lamont hasnt read the playbook and Crockett cant really block or catch. MOss starts not giving a rats ass and we are stuck depending on guys like Courtney "NO Hands" Anderson, Alvis "Incriminating photos of AL" Whittedd and Justin "shitty adrian peterson" Fargas. On top of all that Curry and Porter and MOss chill on the sidelines discussing their discontent for the miserably pathetic excuse for an offensive gameplan poorly employed by a clueless Walsh and dead eyed Art. The result is no running game, no line communicatioin, dropped passes, and Andrew Walter basically sacrificed to the Merrimans of the world. Last year was horrible and i cant wait to see the team next year, especially after the draft. Kiffin and CO. have got this franchise moving in the right direction.

Maybe I'm a bit biased, but I don't remember Gallery being that great at RT. Sure, the sacks were down but he also wasn't exposed to the quality of pass rush on that side. He still struggled with speed and seemed to commit a lot of penalties.

When you consider he was playing yet another new position and only gave up two sacks i would say he had a very good year. Not great but very nice. He hasnt been a bust all three years is basically the point im naking. I feel he had one bad year out of 3.

Rookie year, he was pretty good at RT. 2nd year he was pretty bad. Seems to me that Gallery has gotten progressively worse in each of his years as a pro.

I'm optimistic about Gallery with absolutely nothing but a gut feeling fueling my optimism... Cable has in the past made very good players out of guys with average talent so I'm hopeful he'll be able to get some of our day 1 picks going...

I don't think the switch from man blocking to area/zone blocking is the big deal here, the big deal is switching from the lead step teachings implemented last offseason to the more user friendly and commonly preferred drop step... The one common demoninator (besides sucking) between all our O-line guys last season was they all seemed to have alot of problems with their balance... Everybody seemed to be lunging, reaching and easily knocked off their base... That I believe directly comes from a blocking style that may just not be effective against the combination of size and speed you see across the board with todays defensive front 7's...

I really think Gallery breaks out this year and cements himself as a LT... Should he NOT regain the confidence, balance and technique he displayed at Iowa under Kirk Ferentz, I'd rather see him moved to LG than RT... Having the guards be able to get to the second level is what makes the running game go in zone blocking schemes... With Gallery's athleticism, I believe he could play a Eric Steinbach/Alan Faneca pulling guard roll for us...

As it stands, barring a free agent signing or a rookie surprising from day 1, I think we probably open with:

LT: Gallery
LG: Grove
C: Newberry
RG: Boothe
RT: McQuistan

Not an imposing line up on paper considering last years perfromances, and not what I would have done, but I'll give Cable the chance to do his thing and see what happens...

I hope we are able to sign Cooper Carlisle as he'd probably be penciled in as a starter right away. I also hope we draft at least one OL, preferably a first day pick. Not sure how confident I am with Mcnasty playing the RT position.
