Our receivers coach....

Q&A: Former ASU football coach Charlie Coe adjusts to NFL life

By Josh Moon

Things move quickly in the NFL. Just ask former Alabama State head coach Charlie Coe. In just a couple of months on his new job as the Oakland Raiders' receivers coach, he has seen a superstar wideout traded, gone through his first mini-camp sessions, and got to know a group of receivers who might not be there tomorrow.

The Montgomery Advertiser caught up with Coe this week to see how life's been treating him since he left the Capital City.

Q: So, do you miss me yet?

A (Laughing) Ev-
ery day. I lost your number when I changed phones or I would've called. No, really, that's what happened.

That's OK. Play that game if you want to. I know you miss me. How's life been otherwise out there?

Good. Things are going well. Just wrapped up camp a couple of days ago. Now, we're getting ready for a little vacation. Going to head down to St. Louis for about eight days or so and then come back and get ready to go full speed.

Having any trouble adjusting to the pace of it all?

Nah, I think it's a little different approach, but the pace and work demands aren't much different.

What's the biggest difference then?

Just the way you approach things. You don't have much control as an assistant. The head guy controls everything. And all of it is very professional. If you want to get a player's attention, you do it through their pocket, taking away that money.

It seems like dealing with the players would be a little more difficult, since some of them have been around so long and know their jobs. Any problems there?

No, everybody's professional. They want to learn, want to be taught. They'll listen to you because that's what they're paid to do. And they know they got here by listening to coaches and doing what they were told. The hardest thing is that you can't really get close to anyone because they might not be here tomorrow. You can be talking to a guy one day and the next, you look up and he's gone -- been cut.

The two things I think everybody wants you to answer is how much were you involved in the Randy Moss trade to New England and how has wideout Jerry Porter been? I didn't have anything to do with that trade. That was in the works before I got here, I believe. I certainly wasn't consulted. As for Jerry, he's great. He's worked his butt off, done everything I've asked of him and been a leader. No problems at all.

Have you talked to (your son) Michael (Coe, who's with the defending Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts) much? How's he doing?

Doing real well. I think he's slowly picking up the speed of everything and getting used to it. I've talked to his coaches out there and they think a lot of him, really like the effort he's been giving. He's starting on the punt protection team and kickoff team -- he's the off-returner -- and is second string (at defensive back).

Since you're in the league, too, do you feel like you're in a better position to offer him advice?

I don't know. Kids tend to not listen to their dads, for some reason. Even at ASU, I had Reggie (Barlow) talk to Mike a lot about what was expected of him at the next level, what life was like. I think he listened more to Reggie than he would me even though I had more experience as a coach.

Since you mentioned Reggie, what do you think?

I think he'll do fine. He's hungry, he wants to learn and I think he's got some guys around him who will help him out. I'm a little concerned about the offensive staff because it's so young and I don't know how much input Jim Marshal is having. That could be a problem early on.

I've said I thought it was a little too early for Reggie because he's at ASU and I think we both know the trouble there. You were in the game a long time but still had compliance issues pop up. Because of your experience you were able to catch some other problems. Same with your predecessor (L.C. Cole). Do you think that'll be a problem for Reggie?

I don't know. I think it will be less of a problem because the administration there is behind Reggie. He'll benefit from some things that me and my predecessor never had simply because they want him there. They're united behind him. That's good for them and great for Reggie. He's a Montgomery guy, he's an ASU guy and that's the job he's always wanted. I'm happy for him and wish him the best. I think he'll be a very good head coach.

Are you happy with your decision to leave?

Yes. I'm enjoying myself out here. I think my family is adjusting to it. I like the staff and the players. I'm happy here.
