Howie is the gold standard. Dude just knows how to build a team. Spends draft resources on the line (Davis and Carter in back to back years) and they always have a good o-line. Their backups this year are better than starters on some teams.

And Moro Ojomo should be top priority for us next year they won’t be able to afford him

The new regime wanted to build this defense out from the back end. Kubiak had a press conference in which he explained why as an OC the secondary is so important in designing and calling plays. But the last two Superbowls were won by teams with dominant D-lines- so that was certainly a choice by him that is against the grain. I would have taken McDonald over Stukes, but if Stukes becomes a chess piece back there, and these young corners develop, than you might have something. But having a good secondary won't make a lick of difference if a team runs down your throat every play.

NE has a good DT but what makes that D good is its secondary. Denver, I’d say, is built back to forward too. Working back to in does not mean you have shit at IDL. We just do.

They definitely go hand in hand- Denver can still pressure the QB. Maybe the edge group this year can get some sacks because that DT group can't do shit. A good passrush helps any secondary.

Leonard is dropping DTs into coverage. I just don't think there's a place in this defense for the type of DT that was available in the draft. I expect this DL will always be undersized. Versatility and play calling are going to be paramount for it be successful. Coaching as well. Hopefully these guys are up for it.

Agree, the fact that they passed on DT's until the 7th round is pretty telling. Most of the fatties that were drafted of the run stopping variety. I think Leonard wants smaller undersized athletic types that he can use interchangeably. Whether that is the prudent decision remains to be seen.

We added 3 new players to our front 7 two LB’s and an Edge with about $75 million GTD. We also invested a 3rd round pick to that group as well. We also just added $10 million to that group with the DT Fatukasi. Only one of those guys were over 25 (at the time)

The worst part of our defense has been our secondary for the better part of 20 years now. A fluke year with JDR where it was okay. I think we absolutely nailed the direction we needed to go in the draft. It may take a while to get there as they are all young but it was what needed to happen.

A whole lot easier to scheme to stop the run than it is to have to scheme to stop the pass. JMHO

The way I see it is impressive DT’s don’t go in the second round. Sure some have emerged from every round in the draft but if the league thinks you are “that guy” as a DT you get drafted before the second round. I still think if the Florida kid Banks had been available it would have been a tougher choice. But even a DT with an injury history went in the 1st because if healthy he could be an amazing player. I’d imagine more teams felt that way and would have risked it after pick 18

Agree. Any DT worth his salt is going to go off the board early. I'm wondering if Jalen Carter didn't have that off field speeding incident, would the Raiders have taken him? Weren't some people in the organization lobbying for him ?

It's all been bad but seems like we have never been able to get off the field in 3rd down situations.
