I think Art Shell gets two full years anyway which is only fair I suppose. But after that I really wonder who will come to Oakland. This is most disturbing because there are only 32 of these jobs in the world and to think a potential HC would pass on an opportunity for an NFL HC job is frightening.
When I look at the obvious pain in Art's face and the stress he must be under coupled with his diabetes, I can't help thinking that we may see Art stepping aside for health reasons come the end of the year... I really think the plan was to have Art in place as management sooner than later with Al's health considerations....
Ideally, we'd have a young up and comer on staff to promote when Art gets his bump up, but unless that's Rob Ryan I just don't see him... and it's hard to get a read on Ryan as a potential HC since we never get to hear him speak...
I think Al was on the right track with Petrino, it's just unfortunate that a deal couldn't be reached for whatever reasons... As it stands now, we'd probably either have to give a guy like Jimmy Johnson or Bill Parcells a piece of the team and GM authority or reach into the college ranks for an up and comer looking for a pro shot... It's unlikely, but a guy like West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez would be ideal IMO... Lots of energy and very innovative offensively... :

: We could offer a boatload of cash and hope for the best... Maybe even give a guy like Lane Kiffen a shot... Even though, like Gruden he doesn't have the head coaching experience, he's highly thought of as a young can't miss eventual head coach...
I'm just hoping this doesn't spill over into the FA market and the draft where players really don't want to come here.
Between the consecutive losing seasons and the Porter/Moss drama, we're going to have to overpay and maybe take chances on players others don't want (Haynesworth, TO.) till we turn it around....
