Potential Cards-Raiders Trade: Davis for Porter

Posted Oct 11th 2006 11:19AM by Dan Benton
Filed under: AZ Cardinals, NFC West, NFL Rumors

As I mentioned yesterday, Mike Jurecki of XTRA Sports reported that the Cardinals had begun to shop around Left Tackle Leonard Davis. Some of the potential suitors were the Dallas Cowboys and the Oakland Raiders. According to a morning report from Jurecki it looks like the Raiders have really gone after Davis hard and trade talks are moving along quickly.

For a brief moment I thought perhaps Randy Moss would be a name mentioned, but according to Jurecki it looks like Jerry Porter is name being thrown around. Porter had been one of the biggest weapons for the Raiders over the previous two seasons, but has been in the "dog house" this year and has yet to see the field. His fall out with the Raiders has been rather public, so dangling his name out there does not surprise me. Included in the trade, the Raiders would send an undisclosed draft pick to the Cardinals.

With Larry Fitzgerald only out for a maximum of five weeks, I really do not think it is in the Cardinals best interest to give up Davis, especially given the current state of their offensive line. I am not sure if the Cardinals are hitting the panic button or what the motives are behind this potential trade but outside of a good draft pick, I really do not see how this benefits the team.

Somebody give me the low down on Davis.

Potentially that would solve three problems...LT, RT and Jerry Porter... :D

I wonder how close the Raiders may be on this? No wya of telling I suppsoe.

I really would think considering the Moss-Denny Green connection, Moss would be the one Green persues (as is speculated down the page on that link provided), though if the Cards have no intention of resigning Davis at the end of the year, aquiring Porter may be just a move made to get them through this season without Fitz....

Can you imagine next year with Moss and Fitz on the outside and Boldin in the slot?... Oh my....

With Warner or Leinart (probably Leinart) tossing them the ball? That would be a sweet ass receiving corp .... and count in Edge. Nice.

Move Walker and Porter? Or Walker and Moss?

Get Davis and a pick?

It would also move Langston to the bench in all liklihood... John Clayton supposedly also talked about this on his radio show, which is why I went looking for it (I actually did my own search, yipes)... and it's odd because RFID mentioned Davis in another thread earlier today... I don't know how much merit it has, but all you need to know about Davis is that his nickname is BIGG, with an extra G because he's the biggest player in the NFL....

FWIW, the Vikes also may be looking at Tui per Clayton as well....

Leonard Davis is one of the under-rated LTs in the league, IMO. I've had the chance to see him play once a year since the year he was drafted and film doesn't do the guy justice. He's HUGE, as HB mentioned, but still seems to be agile.

Interesting thought!

I thought Arizona's OL was one of the worst in the league. And they want to run off their LT who is one of the best?

It seems a little weird to me, too, but hey...Who am I to dispel a good rumor?

I love it let's do it now before this weekend.

trading moss and keeping porter would be pretty dangerous. i get worried that our starting lineup will be whitted at the #1 spot and Crockett at the #2 receiving spot because he earned it.:o

On the Huddle forums a guy living in Arizona posted that he'd heard rumors on the radio down there that the deal was Porter and our 2007 #1 pick for Davis and the cards 2007 #2.

More on Porter...

From Jerry McDonald:

– Jerry Porter was seen conducting an interview with an out-of-town reporter and chatted informally with some of the local media for the second time in two weeks.

He didn’t offer a lot of information, but seemed friendly and amiable enough.

If Art Shell has any plans on letting the club’s top receiver over the past two years back on the field, he continues to hide it well.

“I’ll make that decision when the time comes whether he’s out there or not,'’ Shell said. “He’s working. He’s doing scout teams for the defense. He’s working. It’s not that he’s not working. I’ve never said he hasn’t worked. He’s doing what he’s asked to do and you can’t ask for anything more that. ‘’

Then why isn’t Porter suiting up?

“Coaches choice,'’ Shell said.

When asked if he was drawing a line in the sand with regard to accountability and behavior, Shell said, “No, it has nothing to do with drawing a line in the sand. It’s just a coach’s decision. It has nothing to do with that.'’

Shell said he was not concerned about the outside perception that the Porter affair had gone on too long.

Well at least Art has confirmed that Porter is going hard in practice.... The rest .................... just baffles me....

Mass suicide would occur if we traded the potential number 1 overall pick in the draft for a guy who will be a FA after this year...

Well yes it is baffling at this point. Is it just a personal vendetta with Art? That goes against everyting the Raiders are about -- like "just winning"..

Interesting take I found on a Cards board:

If indeed the rumors that the Cardinals are shopping Leonard Davis are valid, here are some of the implications:

Dennis Green has failed in his efforts to motivate one of his premier players. Now, that being said, one can argue that Davis was never one of Denny's boys, since Denny inherited him and didn't draft him. One could also say that Denny was hamstrung by the organization to justify BIG's exorbitant salary by having him play LT.

Regardless...Davis has not lived up to expectations as one of the team's most high profile players. Part of it is...he's been playing out of position. Sure, he can play LT and he's a B/B+ player there when he isn't jumping the snap or holding on a 4th quarter drive with the game on the line.

However, Arizona is about the only team in the NFL that would play Davis at LT. Other teams in the NFL would look at Davis' size (6'6" 370) and realize that he could be a living, breathing bulldozer at LG.

Wherever Davis plays next year, he will be playing guard...unless...the Cardinals perpetuate the mistake and re-sign him to play LT.

It seems like folly that the HC and offensive coaches would stand by and watch the likes of DT Grady Jackson blow up the middle of the Cards' offensive line and essentially give the Cards no chance to get an offense going, and thus no chance to win, while the one man on the roster who could nullify (and even possibly dominate) Jackson is playing ten feet away.

Some pundits are speculating that Davis will be playing out the string this year (like Simeon Rice and other disgruntled high profile Cardinal draft picks have done in the past) so that he can sign as a free agent with the Cowboys or Texans, and thus return to Texas.

There may be real credence to this...

There's one sang in this scenario, however...it's called the dreaded "franchise tag."

If Davis really wants out...he would be more inclined to jump the snap and hold...and what he can say to the Cowboys and Texans is, play me at guard where I belong...just pay me what I deserve, something in the neighborhood of Steve Hutchinson money.

Should the Cardinals be shopping Davis right now?

There are two distinct and different answers to this question:

1. Yes, they should. Why not try to get some value in return for a player who will likely be gone after this season?

2. No. What they really should do is play Davis where every other would play him...at guard...and see for themselves what kind of an impact he can make there...with the promise that the organization will compensate him handsomely with a new, lucrative contract, should Davis dominate at the position in the manner in which he is capable of.

Leonard Davis is a lame duck at LT...

With the prospect of having to block DT Tommie Harris this Monday Night...who will do more damage than Grady Jackson did if Reggie Wells remains at LG (and thus give the Cards NO chance to win)...the coaches should call Davis in, tell them that they are going to match Davis up with Harris and tell him that his stock as a player will skyrocket if he nullifies Harris on National TV. Give Davis every incentive in the world.

What about if the Raiders call to inquire about a trade package that includes Davis and Randy Moss?

Now...that's a different story, isn't it?

Dennis Green might see this as a chance to save his job. If he lands Moss, the hooplah would be enormous.

Could Q, Fitz and Moss co-exist? Sure they could...especially since Moss would take one of the safeties off of Q or Fitz...and Q could strictly play in the slot where he is best.

Would Art Shell lick his chops to get an offensive lineman like Davis? Of course, he would.

The snag is, though, the Raiders would have to get a deal done with Davis before any trade would be finalized, because there's no way they are going to trade for Davis without getting him to sign a long term contract.

Davis would likely hold on this one too, pun intended.

The most likely scenario for the team to trade Davis now...talk to the Cowboys and Texans. Both teams should be interested in Davis...Parcells has not been happy with his running game and the Texans might have the second worse offensive line in the league and need to build one for the future.

The Cowboys may be willing to give up fair value for Davis, seeing as they are trying to win right now in a very tough division. That's where trade talks could get interesting.

Just the same...if the Cardinals don't trade Davis and stubbornly keep him at LT and thus go into this off-season having not seen firsthand the impact he could make on the running game from the guard position, they are flat-out stupid.

Deal or no deal: Five trades that will never be

By Adam Schefter

Special to NFL.com

(Oct. 11, 2006) -- With the NFL's trade deadline looming Tuesday, here are five deals that absolutely should be -- but foolishly won't be -- made.

1) Oakland wide receiver Randy Moss to the New England Patriots for a first-round pick: New England already has two No. 1 picks, the second of which it acquired from Seattle for wide receiver Deion Branch. Take one and deal it to Oakland for the game's most talented wide receiver. If New England could get Corey Dillon to buy into being a Patriot, then it could do the same for Moss.

2) Oakland wide receiver Jerry Porter to Minnesota for a conditional third-round pick: The teams that are used to being involved in blockbuster receiver deals should pull off another. Porter has destroyed much of his value, but he's still worth a third-round pick that could climb to a second based on playing time.

3) San Diego running back Michael Turner to the Philadelphia Eagles for a second-round pick: Before Turner becomes a restricted free agent after this season, San Diego should get a second-round pick for him now. And Philadelphia should give it up. A back such as Turner could be the difference between a good season and a great one.

4) Seattle wide receiver Darrell Jackson to Kansas City for a second-round pick: The Chiefs are lacking quality wideouts and the Seahawks have a surplus of them. Plus, Seattle's future revolves around Branch and Nate Burleson, not Jackson. Might as well get a quality pick for a quality player who would be happier elsewhere.

5) Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre for Dallas quarterback Tony Romo and a third-round pick: This would be the equivalent of baseball teams trading a Hall of Famer for a quality young arm. And think how happy T.O. would be, getting to play with the quarterback he wanted to play with instead of Donovan McNabb.

Problem is, the Packers never will trade Favre. And these other trades aren't much more likely.

But just because they won't happen doesn't mean they don't make sense.

I don't see either WR getting moved this year.

Especially to the Cards...With Boldin, Fitz and Johnston, Denny would think trading a solid LT/LG for a 8 mil/year WR is smart?

I doubt it.

Short of giving up our #1 pick, I'd piss myself if we landed Davis. Put his ass at RT and rock on.

Yes, he was a brute at guard. But unless we move Sims, or Boothe is hurt worse that we think, I'd be surprised if we used him inside.
