Porter returns to Raiders after suspension reduced
Wed, 25 Oct 2006 10:33:07 PDT

Jerry Porter returned to the Raiders after the NFL Players Association dropped its appeal of the receiver's four-game suspension and the team reduced the punishment to two games.

and here I was saying it was a slow week......

now if he can get his ass on the field and play and stop his bitchin... i'll be happy.

Any chance he suits up against the Squeelers?

I doubt he'll get any significant playing time even if he does.

I don't think Porter has practiced with the fist unit all season.

I hope they just toss him out there, let him get some game reps if we have to pay him.

With this unit I really wonder what the plan is.

Is Morant waiting for Moss to go?
Is Curry waiting for Whitted to go?
Is Will Buchanon depth for next season?
Is Carlos Francis bench depth next season?

Hell, if those are our top 4 next year, I'd bank that we're drafting someone in round 1, 2 at the latest, and then chase after a 40-guy on day 2.

Keeping Moss makes sense with a little restructuring, but keeping Porter does not. That said, we'll do the opposite. Go figure.

i disagree. If Moss was going to be dropped, it woulda happened during the deadline. I doubt it happens now.

I doubt Porter plays at all this year. He's been banished. Whatever, I'm over this dude, just wish we could find a way to get Jonnie Morant more involved but I digress.

Porter fucked with the Raiders (i.e, Art Shell) and the Raiders are fucking with him. I believe the 2 day suspension is without pay? So, since Porter won't give back the signing bonus, the Raiders will suspend him whenever possible. It wouldn't shock me to see the Raiders "find cause" to suspend him again later in the year.

This relationship is beyond over. Too bad we couldn't trade him though.

As for Moss versus Porter in 2007, I stand by my opinion that Art Shell is taking this team in the right direction, but since he walked into a mess, it will take a while to get it righted. This team is playing towards 2007 and I suspect we'll see at least a 25% player changeover next season. Certain players like Jerry Porter will be purged and if the team is improving towards the end (which I believe it will), I think we'll have a chance to attract some decent players in FA.

The Raiders were intentionally quiet in FA this year, but will likely flesh out there roster with a few key signings and I also believe that Al Davis want's to "reinvigorate" Randy Moss and views him as a building block for 2007.

I think Moss is open to it, seems to like living in the Bay Area and let's face it, he gets decent press despite his plucky attitude, from this media center.

Stranger things have happened.

You know what? Having Jerry Porter stand out there and not move a muscle would be as effective as having Alvis Whitted out there giving 100 percent.

Sad, but true.

I believe RaiderIVLife pretty much nailed it.

I think Art has the program headed in the right direction. It's taking longer than we had envisioned but then I’m not sure what we envisioned. What, a complete turn around in three games? Not happening. It's so similar to Gruden's first year it's scary. Purged the cancers. Win a few games. Get the system installed and get on with the Job 1 -- WINNINGS. I think we're going to see the turn around next year. There is reason for optimism.

I don't see this reduction of the Porter suspension anything but a compromise with the league office/player’s association. Nothing has changed. Porter is going to polish the pine this year and he’ll be un-ceremonially dealt/released this off season. Unless they decided to have him share some space with Jimmy Hoffa in Giants stadium. Al is from NY after all! Might have some 'Good Fellas' ties ya know. Just sayin! :D

If Alvis Whitted is on this team next year I'm gonna go Jim Mora. Dude is a nice enough guy but what the real Raiders need is a bunch pricks who get pissed as hell and kick the shit outta some folks. That's Raiders football. I mean, I remember in the old days when our players got a PF they got their money's worth. Ya know some guy got smacked 10 yards out of bounds and thought he was hit by a friggin' Mack truck. 15 yards indeed. Difference? The Raiders were winning 30-3 at the time! ;)

Well, here's the thing. Art said, "Practice with the 1's." I don't think there's any way to spin that than Art offering Porter a chance back in.

Porter said, "No." Quite obviously he's not dropping the feud.

BAM! Suspended. The compromise was simply to move on and prevent further problems.

If Art didn't have a conversation with Porter when he was reinstated, it's unlikely Porter will ever see anything other than scout team duties for the rest of the season.

well he practiced with the ones on thurs... maybe hes ready to put this shit behind him.

I just don't like paying a guy for nothing. If the rule hadn't been changed and we could just T.O. or keyshawn him, then fine. However, since it hasn't, I wish we could get 'our' moneys worth outta the bum before we 86 him.

I'd rather continue the "extended 2007 training camp" and allow guys like Jonnie Morant & John Madsen to develop. Porter won't be hear next year and we aren't going to the playoffs this year.

It's more important to "send a loud & clear message" to those that don't want to conduct themselves in a neccesary manner. This team is playing for 2007 and Al & Art probably knew this all along IMO.

Except that for some inexplicable reason Morant and Madsen aren't getting any quality minutes. If we were making an effort to develop our your guys, I'd understand, but instead we're trotting out Alvis Whitted.

I feel ya, but at some point isn't a line crossed from "sending a loud & clear message" to "biting your nose to spite your face"? I also hope that the message isn't being sent that you too can earn a paycheck and not have to do jackshit just by mouthing off to the coach.

That bothers me too, but my guess is that Morrant & Madsen aren't "earning" (as yet) on during the practice week. That has always been the rap on Morrant I think. Wrong reads or incorrect routes during a game result in turnovers and the Raiders are struggling in that department as it is. I think Art is really, from the ground floor up, trying to instill the mindset of "practice well & play hard" on this team. I happen to agree.

I truly believe that most football players want to play and if Jerry Porter is content to sit & collect a paycheck, that will circulate in NFL circles. I think he is more tarnished by this than the Raiders. Particularly if the Raiders continue to play hard & improve.

My 2 pesos anyway.

Sending a message is great, and important, but a player needs a way back in. I was all for sitting him until he got with the program. Porter and Shell know they can butt heads, now they need to see if they can work together.

Listen, if the doghouse is a one-way ticket out of town, players will do what Moss said, they'll walk on eggshells and that's not good for the lockerroom.
