Just got interviewed on NFL Live.

Not much new. Slammed Art. When asked about Randy:

"There are a lot of guys, that after last season, don't want to be there this year."

he said it twice.

Porter didn't say anything wrong, but I think it would have been a good idea for Kiff to implement a "No WR's allowed to talk to the media" policy when he was hired...

How about no interviews if you didnt play last season... I am trying to be OK with JP or Moss still being on the team...its not going reallly well so far. A need at least a few games of quiet production before i say anything nice about either one of those quitters. I agre with JP's assesment of last year, but he is a player not a coach. His behavior was disgraceful. Art maybe a joke of a head coach, but Jp running his mouth about it is even worse.

Here's my beef with it: Kiffin came in and said to everybody that they weren't talking about last year. He didn't want last year to be the focus for the media, the coaches, the players, or the fans.

So if you're on board with what Kiff is trying to get done, let it go, Jerry.

Jerry should pray his career on the field is as good as Art's was, and stop worrying about coaching stuff.

Considering Shell single handedly flushed a year of Porter's career (in his prime) down the toilet, I can appreciate Porter slamming Shell. I have no idea how much of the interview was spent slamming Shell (could've have been 3 sentences for all I know)... but I'd rather see these guys get last year's circus out of their systems now, than let it spill over into next year.

Jerry Porter: Coaches 'Didn't Seem Like They Had a Clue'

Raiders wide receiver Jerry Porter gave an interview to ESPNews on Friday night in which he ripped the team's former coaching staff, saying of Art Shell and his offensive assistants, "It didn't seem like they had a clue."

Porter went out of his way to defend his teammates on the offensive line, saying it was the coaches' fault -- not the players' fault -- that the team struggled. He said he disagreed strongly with those who say Robert Gallery is a draft bust.

"We had three different offensive line coaches telling five guys five different things," Porter said, adding that Gallery "played three different positions in four years. It's not him. It's the system."

Still, that doesn't mean Porter is thrilled to have Shell and last year's staff gone. Porter said of new coach Lane Kiffin, "We're not buddy-buddy, we're not friends. You're not going to see us hanging out, but we have an understanding of each other." That's not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it's an upgrade over "clueless."

In other news, Porter was asked if Randy Moss will be back with the Raiders this season and said, "I honestly don't know." And he said he thinks the Raiders' defense is so strong that he compared the 2007 Raiders to the 2005 Bears, who made the playoffs despite having Kyle Orton at quarterback for most of the year. "If our offense can muster up 14 to 17 points a game," Porter said, "we'll be able to do some things."

When an offensive player is comparing his own team to the 2005 Bears, that's not a very good sign, but it's nice to hear an honest assessment from the inside of the train wreck that was the 2006 Oakland offense.

just Porter being Porter, again (again)

Why is Porter, the player who has seemingly had a problem with every HC the Raiders have hired, the same player that (IMO) is inconsistent & injury prone, the unofficial spokesman of the team?

I'm somewhat OK with the decision to retain him, but now is a good time for him to lay low (i.e, STFU) and work hard. I'd much rather hear from Nmandi Asoumgha, Kirk Morrison, even Andrew Walter or Ronald Curry than this dude.

Makes you wonder doesn't it.

Is it a statement about the lack of leadership on the team or does the media just go for the throat because they know sooner of later Porter will say something stupid?

Just watched the UTube link (thanks, BTW) and JP is pretty talented physically and he also well spoken, so maybe we just expect more from him? I dunno, but the most damming statistic for me is that he has 24 TD's in 7 seasons.

Even if you subtract last year and basically call it 24 TD's in 6 seasons, his average is only 4 per season and don't forget that he had 9 TD's as the 3rd WR behind Brown-Rice-Garner-Gannon-Solid offensive line in 2002.

Here are his career stats:

Again, maybe I'm being overly critical, but I still expect more from this guy. Aside from the injuries, I've felt that he would vanish for long stretches of time and would come up and scorch poor competition from time-to-time. (shrug)

Maybe this is term that we the fans use, "team leaders", but it does appear that the Raiders lack in this category. Gannon, as much as I criticized him for his physical limitations, certainly was a take charge "team leader". You would never have seen Gannon conduct himself the way that Porter/Moss did last year. Rod Woodson? Lincoln Kennedy? Greg Biekert? All of these players (IMO) played key leadership roles with the Raiders.

I guess you're right about JP, he's a De Facto "leader" on this team. However at some point, he needs to put up some monster numbers (and consistently) to be a true leader.

The media? Spot on. Of course they are waiting for this guy to "say something". He is one of the more interesting interviews in sports, as most are downright bore fests.

Interesting inside take on Robert Gallery and the coaches.

I don't think JP is being particularly honest with the whole calf injury thing, though.

It seemed like Walter could be alright, but nothing spectacular. That's the feeling he gave me when he talked about how he needed help.

Agree raiderfreak7.

Shit, you give ANY NFL QB solid protection and he'll be OK. I've yet to hear what I consider a ringing endorsement from any Raider player about Andrew Walter. Pretty much typical athlete speak.

These guys seem to defend Randy Moss more vigoursly than Walter IMO.
