Blatantly ripped off recap from SC grad and HB favorite BruceLFrank:

THE Jerry Porter Interview (long)

I just listened to a 25 minute interview on Sirius NFL radio with Jerry Porter.

The bottom line and his MANTRA:

-14 Points on offense and we are a playoff team
-Just BLOCK baby

This was an exceptionally good interview and somewhat inciteful too...

Highlights:

-He said he doesn't know who the QB will be but that if we can BLOCK for Andrew Walter he can get it done.

-He was impressed with CJ's numbers at the combine and didn't care if we went receiver as long as it helped us win. He mentioned jokingly that if we drafted a kicker who could kick 100 yard FG's consistently that would be OK too.

-He was non-commital about Randy Moss being on board and on the team in 2007. He indicated that Moss hasn't had any substantive talks with Kiffin or Knapp about the offense and that he should. He agreed that he is drinking the Lane Kiffin Kool-Aid but that Randy Moss hasn't tried it yet.

-He blamed almost all the offensive woes on the O-line. He said that it wasn't the players or the talent but that the coaching never got all 5 guys on the same page on any one play and they never were coached to play as a unit. He also said that he didn't want to say much because he got in trouble playing GM last year in terms of Moss being here in '07.

-He discussed how he got suspended last year. He was playing on the defense and had 3 picks against the 1st team offense. One of the coaches (Sims the defensive QC coach) said "Come on, stop doing that so we can get out of here" and Jerry said "We are going to have to be here for 3 hours no matter what so what difference does it make". That got him suspended.

-He firmly believes that our defense is good enough for us to win games and make the playoffs if the offense can just produce 14 points per game on it's own.

-He said that the biggest misconception about Jerry Porter was that he didn't want to play football last year. He also said that he never complained about his contract.

-When he met with Shell twice in the offseason and then got a hard look at Walsh's offense he knew it would never work. He said that even if you had HOF guys all the way accross it would not work.

-He talked about #81 and Tim Brown. He said that Brown and him clashed his rookie year but it was JP's fault. He said after that he talked to Brown every day and used him as a sponge for getting better. He thought Moss would want #84 and he'd take #81 but it never happened so he waited until now in an effort to FORGET about last season.

-They joked with him and said that Gregg Knapp's bio has nothing about him running a B&B. Jerry said and he hasn't been out of football for "how long?" and that there are more choices than just bagels or muffins for breakfast in the morning.

-He was happy that we are bringing LaMont Jordan in and stated again it was all on the offensive line for the running game woes, but blamed the scheme and coaching.

-He said that he never talked to Al Davis once last year but that he's talked to him 3 times already this offseason. He didn't know how approachable Al was until now but that he is a wealth of knowledge and a great person to talk to about the NFL and being a Raider, etc.

He was psyched and very ready to go this season...

I'm hoping he shows up in the same kind of shape he was in at camp last year... Even if it's just for this coming contract year, we could use the production...

My complimets to Hboy and Mr. Frank. Now can someone get a radio link to hear the whole interview?

Porter seems to be in-line with Raiders 2007 and that's exciting to me. He's a guy we need out there to win.

Some of my favorite parts:

-He said he doesn't know who the QB will be but that if we can BLOCK for Andrew Walter he can get it done.

He said that it wasn't the players or the talent but that the coaching never got all 5 guys on the same page on any one play and they never were coached to play as a unit. Glad to see he's on board. This interview makes it even clearer to me that we will probably be getting rid of Moss. Moss not even "trying" the Lane Kiffin Kool-Aid? Not even going through offensive philosophy with one of your "playmakers"? He's gone, IMO.

Hopefully the enthusiasm that is coming from Kiffen, as evidenced by Porter, is infectious for everyone on the team.

I think we have all agreed that there is some talent on this offense and it was badly squandered last season.

I wouldn't even get that upset if the offense struggles a bit this year, as long as every player is on the same page and is aleast trying to fulfill their assignment. Last year was a total clusterfuck with more left legs than right.

Preparedness and Pride can go a long way into making an effective offense in Oakland.

I hope JP's 3 interceptions were off Brooks and not Walter...

Thanks HB that was some good stuff

I really liked that Interview

change my mind about some stuff about him....I knew there was a reason I used to like this kid

Jerry Porter to Hawii next year :)

From Jmac.

Thanks HB that was a breath of fresh air.

Jerry Porter sounded as if he didn't want to delve into the Art Shell nightmare. Lane Kiffin's advice is to look ahead.

But in a 25-minute interview on Sirius Satellite Radio, the new Jerry Porter talked about the past, present and future of his association with the Raiders on "The Afternoon Blitz" with hosts Adam Schein and Solomon Wilcots.

Let's get the skepticism and cynacism out of the way first before Porter has his say. In case you were wondering, nothing was his fault, or at least that's the way Porter made it sound.

He came in ready to go and all these bad things just happened to him, essentially wasting a prime year of his career.

The reality is that Porter is, and has always been, an extremely moody guy. He would be so sullen as a rookie, eating by himself in the dining area of the Napa Marriott, that Jon Gruden, pouring on the sarcasm, would pull up a chair next to Porter and say softly, "That's OK, Jerry. I'll be your friend today." I would have launched milk through my nose

Porter, however, can also be an insightful, intelligent and clever interview subject. That was the Porter who went on the air Wednesday.

Below are some excerpts from Porter's first public comments since Shell was fired, Lane Kiffin was hired and Porter changed his number to 81.

– On Kiffin:

"He said, `We just want you to come in and work hard.' From my very first year in the league, I never knoew anything else but to work hard. We had Gruden chewing us out in them middle of practice, running along with us, trying to play defensive back, that created a mentality of working hard in practice to gie the quarterback a feel of what you're going to do on game day.

"That's all he asked of me _ to work hard and be accountable. It's time. I basically had my football taken away from me last year and I'm trying to get back."

– Playing defense on the scout team and his eventual suspension:

"We stopped the offense three or four times in a row, and somebody said something like, `C'mon man, (stop it) so we can get off the field. And I said, `What the hell? We're going to be out here three hours anyway.' And that got me thrown off the field. I didn't even get a chance to curse. That was the most expensive trash I ever talked."

(Note: At the time of Porter's insuborndination suspension, Shell said it was an accumulation of events and witnesses said Porter was profane.)

– His budding relationship with Al Davis, with whom he did not speak last year.

"I didn't know that he was as approachable as he is. I mean, this year I sat down and talked to him three times already. And it's a shock to me. Had I known that, I may have done something different last year."

– His trade request:

"Before I asked to be traded, I went up and talked to coach Shell twice and coach Walsh once. It was at that point I reallized I didn't want to be a part of it. But they gave me too much money to just let me go or trade me without giving money back . . . It didn't feel like it could be a successful offense. It would take Hall of Famers across the board to do the things possible and necessary (to make it work). It just wasn't to be."

– Quarterback Andrew Walter:

"I'm not sure that Andrew Walter can't get the job done. He showed me a lot of promise. He's got a quick release, he's very smart in the pocket, but it waqs tough last year because we had a lot of deep drops and before he cold even get to the top of his drop, he had to avoid two or three guys at least on one play."

– The quarterback position in general:

"I'd hae made a hard push for Jeff Garcia because he's worked with coach (Greg) Knapp in San Francisco and that wold have been ideal for Andrew and the organization. It would have given Andrew a chance to grow osme more, Jeff could have played some more."

– Wide receiver Randy Moss:

"We've had convesations, and that's between us. I think if Randy just gets the chance to sit down with Lane and coach Knapp and get a feel for what this offense can do, we'll be fine."

–The offensive line:

"We had five guys doing five different things instead of five guys doing one thing in unison. Keep in mind I haven't blocked a D-tackle or a 3-technique ever, so I can't say exactly what the probem was, but that's what I feel the problem was . . . Robert Gallery didn't come to the NFL and forget how to block, and neither did Jake Grove. But if you tell Robert to do one thing, and Jake to do something different . . . there are going to be some holes."

– His thoughts JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn:

"I could see JaMarcus Russell as a Donovan McNabb-type quarterback that scrambles to throw instead of scrambling to run and get yards. If that's the case, he's going to be a great NFL guy. If Brady Quinn is the intelligent, knowledgable quarterback they say he is, I don't want to say he could be the next Peyton Manning, but he could be a great quarterback, too."

– The possibility of taking a receiver, Calvin Johnson of Georgia Tech, with the first pick:

"Hey, if he can help us, I don't care . . . he had a great workout from what I've read, he's 6-5, 239, runs a 4.35 40-yard dash, has a 46-inch vertical. You can't teach that. If you can get that right now, you need to get it."

– On the Raiders prospects in 2007:

"Honestly, and I really believe this when I say it, if we can get the defense 14 points (per game), we're a playoff team."

– Wearing No. 81:

"Me and Tim, we clashed my first year becuase I was a headstrong, know-it-all rookie. After that, we talked just about every day. I could learn from. When he left the Raiders it was ugly and left a sour taste in my mouth. When Randy came I was expecting him to want 84 and I was going to give him 84 and I'd take 81. But Randy didn't want 84, so I stuck it out, and tiven the events of last year, I just felt it was time for a change."

I got to hear the replay and I have to say put me back on the Porter bandwagon, I loved him. HE was funny, really seems high on Kiffin and the scheme, and seems to really clear up some stuff that happened last year with Al................I almost feel bad for him.........Sign me up I am back on the attack with Porter..............Time to break out the new avatar.........

Good stuff....

Good to see some positive stuff

We can all thank Sapp

Sapp is big time fav of Lane.. digs the guy, and I'm sure he's got the whole team to buy into his system

What I like about Lane the most is...

He's gonna be one of those guys that are'nt the crusty old coaches that rule with an iron fist, sorta like that nasty fuckin english saggy titty hag teacher we had in 3rd grade

But rather a guy thats the players age and aint afraid to get input from everybody.. instead of a hardass coach

I liked the interview as well and I'm willing to let bygones be bygones, but I think I'm not willing to give him a free pass. I think there is some smoke to the Porter is a malcontent if you look at this career on the whole.

Let's see how it plays out, but he does sound positive and very much on board with the what the Raiders are trying to do.

Porter was initially reluctant to discuss last year or Randy Moss, but when they asked the core question about 8 different ways, Porter gave in a bit and actually gave an interview worth listening too. BTW, I think most athlete interviews are largely boring, much like mainstream politicians.

Pretty entertaining to say the least.

My favorite line: Shell and Walsh stole a year from me.

Didnt he do that do all of us, brother?

:)

Yes, they absolutely did.

And if we take the prefered approach of some of people around here and concede this next season as yet another "rebuilding year," those 2 losers just might get a chance to steal ANOTHER year from us without even being with the organization.

JMO.

I agree. It will take 8-8 or beter to get that 2006 flavor out of my mouth.

Words are well and good, but I will wait to see what Porter does on the field this year.

I dont think if we drafted AP, Rice and Greg Olsen that we are a playoff team next year.

It doesnt mean Im a 'hater' or 'pessimistic' but just that I see some big time holes on offense, a couple on defense and a 31 year old coach with an entirely new staff.

I'm thinking we start dominating the AFCW in '08. :)

As much as I hate to say it, 2007 is going to be tough year in the AFC West. SD will be good and the way Denver is loading for Bear, they obviously think they're window of opportunity is in the next two years.

2008 would be great. The fallout of the new salaries and new guys in the Denver lockerroom should hit at the same time they are going to have to pay for this year's moves under the cap.

It sounds to me that he's solidly in Andrew Walter's corner, and I like the vote of confidence, quite frankly.

I'm surprised by this interview. He sounds knowledgable and like he's ready to play.

The day a WR comes out and publicly rips the only QB we have on our roster, after being inactive for an ENTIRE season...Well that'll be the first time.

Porter isnt stupid.

He'll say all the right things, and we'll know how it translates when we watch him play, and watch the team struggle a bit. That will show his true mettle, IMO.
