Plummer's injury puts Pro Bowl out of reach
Groin strain won't affect his off-season

HONOLULU - When the AFC's Pro Bowl players strolled across a sun-splashed field to practice Tuesday, Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer was not among them.
Plummer, who had been scheduled to be an injury replacement for Cincinnati's Carson Palmer, has a lower-abdominal/groin injury. Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said the injury would have limited Plummer too much to participate.
Shanahan and the Broncos staff are coaching the AFC team in Sunday's Pro Bowl. Titans quarterback Steve McNair was added to the AFC team Tuesday after the Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger turned down the opportunity.
Plummer suffered the injury in the AFC Championship Game.
The AFC went through Tuesday's workout with only Peyton Manning and Trent Green at quarterback.
"(Broncos head trainer Steve Antonopulos) was telling me, he wasn't sure how much Jake could play because his groin . . . was bothering him," Shanahan said. "And you come here, you've got to play. You don't come here to sit on the bench because there would be a lot of guys coming and not playing. When you do come, you've got to come here ready to go."
Shanahan called Plummer's injury "minor" and said it should not limit the quarterback's participation in any of the team's off-season programs. It would have been Plummer's first Pro Bowl appearance.
Shanahan also said Plummer finished the season without any further damage to his left knee.
Plummer had some cartilage repaired last off-season but will not need surgery on the knee this year.
"He came through fine," Shanahan said.
Plummer wore extra padding on the knee through the past year and had treatment on the knee all season long.
PLEASED WITH PROMOTIONS: Shanahan said Rick Dennison was ready and deserved a promotion to become the team's offensive coordinator.
When Gary Kubiak left to become the Houston Texans coach, Shanahan promoted Dennison to offensive coordinator and hired Mike Heimerdinger as assistant head coach.
Dennison has coordinated the team's running game in recent years and will continue to do that. Heimerdinger will coordinate the passing game and call plays with input from Dennison and Shanahan.
Dennison also will continue coaching the offensive line. He has been the line coach for the past five seasons.
"Rick Dennison has done a great job; he's coordinated a running game for a number of years," Shanahan said. "He's an excellent coach. I thought it was a great promotion for him because it's well-deserved. (He's) very sharp, very accountable."
NO WORRIES: With some of the league's best players in the room, Shanahan said it didn't take very long to get things in order Tuesday.
The teams each practice only five times before Sunday's game and each workout lasts an hour at the most. But Shanahan said the AFC team went through Tuesday's work with few errors.
"We only met for a half hour and they were able to go through a whole practice with very few mistakes," Shanahan said. "But the timing is not there right now, it's going to take a few days.
"By game time we'll be in pretty good shape."
LATE ARRIVALS: Shanahan said the five Steelers players who were named to the AFC team are expected to arrive today but might not practice until Thursday.
