Chiefs notebook

Plummer applauds Chiefs defense
It had been a while since an opposing quarterback sounded like this.
"We struggled all day," Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer said. "They came out and threw a lot of different stuff at us."
At seemingly the very time the Chiefs record-breaking offense is vaporizing, the Kansas City defense has become a formidable unit.
Sunday at Denver, the Chiefs made Plummer look downright confused in a 6-for-10, 75-yard first half in which the Broncos went scoreless. It was the first time Denver had been shut out in the first half since 2003 and the first time they went scoreless at home in the first half since 2000 against San Diego. The 200 game was the last time the Broncos played a game in which neither team scored a touchdown.
"The defense played as good of a game as I've seen since I've been here," Chiefs running back Larry Johnson said.
Denver finished with 318 yards, but averaged just 4.0 yards per carry. Plummer's numbers improved in the second half for a 173-yard outing, though his quarterback rating was a meager 56.7.
Team connections
Among the numerous connections between Chiefs and Broncos personnel is the relationship between Chiefs coach Herman Edwards and Broncos safety John Lynch. Edwards was the Bucs' defensive backs coach from 1996-2000. Lynch played in Tampa for his first 11 seasons (1993-2003).
Another notable connection in the secondary is Lenny Walls, who the Broncos signed as a rookie free agent in 2002. He made 20 starts for Denver before the Broncos released him after four injury-riddled seasons.
Huard's return
Sunday was Chiefs quarterack Damon Huard's first start since Nov. 26, 2000, when he went 22-for-33 for 183 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions in a 17-14 win over Peyton Manning's Indianapolis Colts.
Huard outplayed Manning in that game as Manning, then in his third season, completed just 16 of 34 passes for 209 yards and an interception. Completing 17 of 23 passes for 133 yards on Sunday, Huard recorded an 87.8 quarterback rating.
In three games that year as Jay Fiedler's backup, Huard threw for 318 yards with three interceptions against one touchdown.
Quick kicks
• Larry Johnson went over 100 yards for the 14th time in his career Sunday, making him No. 2 in 100-yard games in franchise history. He carried 27 times for 126 yards.
• Dustin Colquitt continued his run of spectacular punting that began in the preseason. Colquitt averaged 46.8 yards on six punts, which included a 53-yarder, a 51-yarder, a 45-yard blast that pinned Denver inside its own 1-yard line and another that left the Broncos at their own 3.
