ALAMEDA — John Shoop is in, and Tom Walsh is out as Raiders offensive coordinator but it might not be advisable to expect wholesale, obvious changes immediately.
But according to players at least one marked difference is in store under Shoop: energy.

"He's definitely a lively guy," Randal Williams said of his former tight ends coach. "He's going to bring a lot of much-needed energy to this offense."

Energy and sometimes confrontational.

"He's one of those in-your-face type guys," Williams said. "Not in a negative way ... with positive reinforcement. But he's not afraid to chew you out when you don't do what you're supposed to do. I think it's going to make guys cross their T's and dot their I's."

"He'll get on you ... so that will be fun," said quarterback Andrew Walter, who worked with Shoop when coached quarterbacks. "He demands a lot. You have to step up accordingly."

Another tight end, Courtney Anderson says not to expect anything too divergent from the Walsh offense.

"I think you just tweak it at this point in time," he said. "We just have to go out and execute whether it was Walsh or him. It doesn't really matter who's calling the plays."

Running back LaMont Jordan may be sidelined with a knee injury, but he says he is excited by the change and said it wasn't too late in the year to switch coordinators.

"It's unfortunate for coach Walsh that this had to happen, but I think a change needed to be made," Jordan said.

"I think the most important thing with Shoop ... you get an understanding of what he's trying to accomplish. With coach Walsh, it was kind of 'Well, OK, what are we trying to do here?' With Shoop, it's like 'Hey, this ... what we're trying to exploit.' "As an offensive player, you kind of want to know what your offensive coordinator is thinking about, know what his feel is. I don't think that happened with coach Walsh."
"I think any time there is a change, there's a sense of excitement, of urgency," center Jake Grove said. "Hopefully it will re-energize people. I think it's a positive move, nothing against Tom."

Quarterback Aaron Brooks said, "it doesn't really mean anything to me. As quarterback and one of the leaders of this team, we are still looking for another victory. Personally, I am looking for my first. Obviously management felt like it was the best move for this football team. I am taking the same approach. I am going to go out and play my heart out. Sometimes change is good. We're going to find out whether this change is good or not.

"It would be wrong for me to pass judgment on the halftime adjustments (by Walsh). I have my own personal thoughts about that, but this game comes down to players."

Williams said to expect an expanded number of plays within the game plan, and it would be an asset.

"We have in the past been known to run a lot of plays over and over again during a game," he said. "It's one of those things where in the third or fourth quarter, the defense just keys on what we did in the first or second quarter. There'd be a pretty good chance we were going to run those things again."

STREAK MAY END: According to a Raiders spokesman, there are "a significant number of tickets" still unsold for Sunday's game against Houston.

That means the team's streak of five straight sellouts and a lifting of the television blackout appears unlikely.

EXTRA POINTS: Kicker Sebastian Janikowski complained of a sore back and missed practice Wednesday. Coach Art Shell said as a precaution, the team would look at several kickers in case Janikowski was unable to kick Sunday. ... Rookie center Chris Morris, who was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster Tuesday, will most likely handle long snapping duties for injured Adam Treu according to Shell. ... DE Lance Johnstone was given the day off from practice Wednesday. He broke a toe several weeks ago and has been troubled by a sore knee. Johnstone said he expected to play, however. ... Shell said LT Robert Gallery was definitely out but that LG Barry Sims had a chance after practicing on a limited basis. "I would say he is very questionable," Shell said. ... Former Cal offensive lineman Mark Wilson was signed to he practice squad, replacing Morris.

Well a'right

Hey, getting someone to call a play and having the players undestand what the play is, is a helluva an idea

Hell, it might even work

I would like to take this time to apologize to Jerr Porter for tearing him a new ass

He saw the same thing in mini camps we began to see in week 3

Jerry... The Nips sends his apology

I actually think what was meant is that the players know why it is called.

And Porter called Shell and Walsh out before mini camp, so....

I think the damage is already done. I don't see Porter coming back next season unless for some fluke of a chance that Shell isn't back next season.

Of course it doesn't mean anything to Brooks. He's going to do what he's going to do. Give him a play, he'll run it. Big deal.

I'm pretty sure I read some WR state that they had absoluetly no idea what to run

The QB was basically told to just throw to whosever open

Ala sandlot style

Could also explain the 7 step drops on every pasing play

This was documented by several players... I remembering someone posting an article in KFFL

This caould also explain why we continue to have false starts

All the time outs?, Remember the time it took to get to the line.. they were drawing WR routes in the grass, those timeoutes were because every time a QB attempted to call an audible.. no WR changed.. timeout

So fuckin Mickey Mouse this playcalling was it was downright embarrassing

It was clear to me in week 1 that this team had absoluetly no idea what they were doing on 85% of the plays

That could also explain all the sacks

This team is not directed properly and enters sunday stadiums unprepared

This is better than finishing the season with Walsh. I am actually excited to see the offense hit the field after reading that. Havent felt that way since week 2.

Somebody left a door open.

We writers normally have no access to team meetings and film sessions in Alameda, relying instead on coaches and players to replay the occasional anecdote or snippet of conversation. But there is a meeting room off a hallway just outside the media room, separated by a door - and today, someone had propped open the door with a garbage can.

I came back from our locker room access time about 12:30 Thursday afternoon, and had just started into lunch when I heard someone loudly lecturing from the meeting room. And that's how I got to hear new offensive coordinator John Shoop in action.

The book on Shoop, of course, is that he is buzzing with contagious energy. We saw him in action at training camp the last two years, and this summer - having moved from quarterbacks to tight ends -- he was the most demonstrative coach on the field. The players who worked most closely with him repeatedly used the word "lively" to describe his study sessions. And after hearing him Thursday, I think it's an apt portrayal.

"Are you with me?" Shoop asked his players over and over. The question seemed to be a combination of "Do you understand?" and "Are we in this together?"

"ReShard, you've got to get over and put a body on this guy. Are you with me?"

"Let's play. We don't panic. Let's play. Are you with me?"

"He's the Mike (linebacker) on this play. Are you with me? And he's the Sam. Can you feel it?"

Beyond an occasional "yep" or "got it" from a player, the air was filled with a constant stream of Shoop. He cajoled, pumped up and, more than anything, instructed in a near-continuous patter. He didn't bark at anyone, but he was fairly intense, with bits of humor thrown in.

At one point, he tried to stress to right tackle Langston Walker the importance of making a certain block. "Or you have to buy Aaron (Brooks)' wife a car, Langston, and explain to her why he can't hug her because he's got a hurt shoulder."

And he told center Jake Grove: "If you ran by (a defender) and didn't touch him, that wouldn't make much sense, would it Jake? But you wouldn't do that, because you're a good football player."

I never witnessed Tom Walsh leading a meeting, but I imagine a much different style - more instructional, less inspirational. Shoop's wife is a Presbyterian minister, and I'm guessing a little of her ability to lead a congregation has rubbed off on the coach. Of course, this wasn't exactly church.

"We ain't gonna let these guys screw us," Shoop said. "We're gonna screw them."

Another time, he observed, "It's more important to be decisive than to be right." With the Raiders at 2-9 and in danger of coming apart at the seams, that sounded like pretty good advice from the young offensive coordinator.

Provided I don't see a rehashing of the Chicago horizontal offense from '01 -- '03, I have to say I'm at least a little excited to see a guy with a pulse calling the plays and talking about accountability.

Sunday's pre-game speech from Shoop.

Shoop: "so just like in practice, only better vs. the Texans, right fella's? Are you with me?"

Team: "uh, yea coach, just like practice".

Shoop: "hey - I said "only better" right?" "right?"

Team: "Got it coach - we'll be better".

Shoop: "Better than practice or better than the Texans?"

Team: "Just like you said coach".

Shoop: [scratching head]...OK - let's go kick some ass men!" "are you with me?"

Dude that team in Chicago STUNK it up more then we ever could.......
They had nobody out there with the value of a Moss and their QB's weren't even close to Aaron which means they were real BAD!!!!

Kickoff is at 1:05 PM Sunday...

Ya with me fellas? :D

This is a breath of fresh air. We'll see if the results are favorable.

I don't care what kind of offense we run at this point, as long as we score more points than the other team.

Forget "Commitment to Excellence", this is our new moto for the remainder of the season...

I like this guy!

I'm kinda excited... it's nice to finally have some energy to go along with all those Godamn fossils we wheel out there on the sidlines every week.

I like dude already.

I wonder if Walter will get any chances in Shoop's offense before the year is over.

if he does, it would because of injury or futility. I'd rather not see either. Just chill him until next year with a better set up hopefully.

I hear ya. If I see some playcalls that keep the rush away from Brooks, I would like to see what Walter could do. I don't think his spirit is broken yet. I also think the rest of the guys on the offense respect Walter more than Brooks, but that probably ain't saying much.
