I'm almost getting drafted out.
Watching NFLN right now and it just kind of has gotten circular at this point; everything has already happened, now we're just waiting. Read like five draft magazines front to back. Read local papers online and teams' message boards figuring what other teams might do. Have done mocks. Read about 80,000 mocks.
I'm so ready to just get it on and see what happens.
• My whole life right now is just waiting.
• I don't like the classes I'm in right now per se. I mean they're ok but I can't wait 'til they're over with. In one, I have to read hundreds of pages out of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance just after the draft, according to the syllabus. (I'm gonna do it all before then.)
I can hardly focus on anything right now, it seems...
• Having the No. 1 pick is just so different. And all these rumors. Constantly in my head. It's not like when this team was picking 17th or whatever and you just kind of wait and see by default because you have no idea what's going to transpire beforehand.
• I've thought all along it will be Russell but this gets tougher and tougher to read. Surely it doesn't help the team we root for is the NFL's fortress of secrecy in all facets of the league to BEGIN with, much less with something as epic as this.
• Something tells me that unlike most years, when a day or two before the draft it comes out who the team will take and the contract parameters are roughly sketched out, we won't even know what the hell's going to happen until 15 minutes tick away.
• And even then we'll have Sal Palantonio and others raining on the parade by just making up billions of trade scenarios.
• I wonder which I'm going to watch the draft on? ESPN or NFLN? I think I'll tape both. ESPN actually isn't all that bad until the second round when they just totally check out and stop covering...well, the ongoing draft.
Ummmm...
• Copy editing is a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. I can get a 4.0 last quarter, already be in the campus paper without actually being in the production course, be selected to pick up and show a video for one class when the teacher's going to be gone, but I get a 12 out of 20 identifying subjects and direct objects of sentences.
• Elsewhere, I'm reporting on daily news from South Africa (hopefully that'll work out nicely 'cause my work just hired a dude from there), group projecting on Russian journalists being killed, and spending evenings with 179 other pupils listening to "Values and Technology" lectures from a genius. He is a genius, and the class is fun, but I still have no idea what it's about three weeks in. There's no textbook. We've spent hours looking at and talking about Google Earth, YouTube, MySpace, iTunes, Blade Runner, car pool lanes... it's just wacky. It'd be awesome--well, it kind of already is, I guess, as far as credit opportunities go; one of the first assignments was to write any essay about something we're passionate about, excepting love interests, and I wrote about some little thing called the NFL draft after I froze up--if it didn't get out at 9 at night. And then I drive like 45 minutes home. I think I have it bad, though; talking about commutes the other session, someone said he drives an hour and a half to school everyday because his wife teaches somewhere else. Fuckin' California.
• I just want to get through this so fast right now. I started growing a beard and a stache that aren't coming off 'til the quarter is over. It is reminding me to be patient so far.
• And then in July I'm going to Michigan for almost a month to be with loved ones, family, and friends. (Not always all the same thing...) I can't, fucking, wait. Just to try something other than California for change's sake would be cool enough in itself...
• I'm not even requesting off for the draft at work 'cause I know they probably wouldn't give it to me, so I'm gonna call in methinks for the first time in like half a year or so. But don't tell anyone.
• I wasted (well, kinda) my spring break week going to Las Vegas for the first time. Stayed at the Gold Coast. Walked more than anyone ever should. One night we got totally hustled and robbed by a "free limo" scam on the way to a strip club, where things happened that didn't really make me feel too good, either. It was my first time and my homies conveniently told that to the staff without my knowing. But yeah, the limo scam. Dude at the hotel says he can hook us up with a free limo to take us to the nearest strip club. We're like cool. Guy shows up, takes us somewhere we have no idea of. Says to wait inside while he sees if it's 'cool' for us. Hmm, ok. 'Yeah, guys, it's cool for you... have a good time.' He drops us off, bails. We go in. The cover charge is fuckin' 60 dollars. And we're all alone in a shady part of Vegas we don't know. After all the shit went down and we were out hundreds of bucks, he didn't even show up again when we called him, naturally. Kind of funny when you think about it.
• Other than that it was badass. I hooked up with Bayonett from the K, and I'll tell you, that dude is the most hospitable mofo you'll ever meet. He knows how to show you a good time. And his rapper friend he introduced me to is gonna blow up and put Vegas on the map, I hope. That night was truly one of the most fun nights I've had in, well, ever.
• I bet I'm the first person in the history of Vegas to make events out of the Star Trek Experience and where Tupac died in the same evening, but, that's me.
• The Warriors might make the playoffs. That means there is hope to turn this franchise around, surely. Did you hear what I just said? The Warriors are in the playoffs, maybe. The Warriors and the playoffs. I still can't believe it. I guess good things CAN happen.
• The more I see some of these text books talking about music from the '50s and '60s I can't help but download some of it. My playlists right now include The Penguins and The Flamingos. Does shit really change all that much? Listen to Akon right now. Well, his shit like "Don't Matter". It's the same thing.
• Alright I'm going to read some Robert Pirsig and pretend I know WTF the dude is talking about.
• Did I mention I want time to go by? Fast? April showers bring May flowers. Come on draft, get here already.
