Old day 2 stuff 2

He realized that before he opted not to pay Meyers, don’t kid yourself. He stuck to his plan (don’t pay coin to a slow possession receiver). Hopefully this year he retains a player or two that we want. More importantly, hopefully he does more than dumpster dive (although I don’t need big splash singings outside, perhaps, the OL).
Hopefully he saved that Meyers money for Pierce. Big fast guy on the upswing works for me.

Don't overthink it.

The brain trust simply didn't want to pay Meyers.

Who is "the brain trust?"

What did Meyers offer? Excellent release that established separation, solid route execution, excellent hands, elite blocker at the position, gadget play as QB, good teammate. He aided the development of other WRs on separation and route running.

Word out of camp was that 'the brain trust' saw Bech as replacing Meyers as a receiver with good hands and a plus blocker. Had no intention of re-signing Meyers. Carroll played Thornton instead, and got his pet QB's binkie when Meyers got traded. So no idea what Bech can do.

And yeah, it matters if the 'brain trust' did not grasp what Meyers brought to the team. Lockett arguably hurt the O, sure as shit didn't help it. Meyers would likely have been 3 years $33-35 million. No FA WR available will bring what Meyers did unless we're willing to up to $18-20 million a year.

AP was in over his head as the HC. But as a defensive guy, and all the gushing he did over Spillane, when asked which player he would take down a dark alley he said Meyers.

All of our better guys are under contract already. Most of the dog shit that Pete brought in can go pound rocks for all I care. I'd be open to bringing Parham back for the right $$ and Stokes too. Chinn is on a two year deal.

Stokes surprised, and I agree. A new DC has a pretty clean slate. On the other hand, at minimum need D-line depth, two zero techs, three LBs (I believe Eichenberg is the veteran), slot CB and the starting S opposite Chinn.

Parham as depth, fine -- despite the weight he put on still got bulldozed when trying to pass block. Didn't check, but to my surprise Cappa found his stride as backup C.

Miller, JPJ, and Glaze can move well, seems that Grant can and don't know about Rogers. Tasi was a rugby player, so he can. I hope to hell the new OC/play calling HC will mix power with outside zone.

Meyers asked to be traded more than once....

Meyers asked to be traded more than once....

Yes. Because Spytek made clear he didn't value him (pretty much openly said Bech would replace him) and didn't even make a lowball offer to keep him.

How do you know this?

Because no one ever said it happened. Meyers said specifically he had not heard a single thing from the front office.

Not even a rumor. In this media world, it would have come out.

I’m really digging the LB class this year. There are legit 7-9 guys who could go top 100 in the draft. A handful more who will or could go in the next 50 or so picks.

We can just ignore the two Ohio State boys Styles and Reese they will be gone. After that though there are still plenty to go around.

I really like the kid from Pitt. Looks a bit smallish but he's a ball hawk.

So, good year to need 3 LB?

Speaking of LBs, I'd still like to kick the tires on KJ Wright at DC. SF just continues to produce solid LBs year after year. Even the non stars guys do the basics like tackle and know their assignments. They're doing something right there.

Quality control coach to DC!

Thats a jump.

He might be interested.

They have had the same LB coach for like a decade I think. Maybe kick the tires on Holland.

Steve Smith is pretty good at this WR Draft stuff
