Key gains: DE Tamba Hali (Penn State), S Bernard Pollard (Purdue), CB Lenny Walls (Broncos).
Key losses: FB Tony Richardson (Vikings), WR Marc Boerigter (Packers), LB Gary Stills (Ravens), S Jerome Woods (released).
Breakdown: Edwards needs more toughness on defense. Hali and Pollard are a good start. The Chiefs are pursuing free agent CB Ty Law, who played for Edwards in New York last year. RB Priest Holmes might return from a neck injury, but Larry Johnson (1,750 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2005) is the established starter. Third-round QB Brodie Croyle (Alabama) is a potential replacement for Trent Green, who will be 36 in July.
Questions: How quickly can Edwards build a defense? What will Johnson do for an encore? Besides Johnson, the rest of the Chiefs' offense is aging fast. Richardson's blocking, receiving and leadership will be missed. Depth is perilously thin at WR behind starters Eddie Kennison and Samie Parker.
