LIONS WOULD DRAFT-AND-TRADE JOHNSON

As Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports, the Raiders are wrestling with the question of whether to take quarterback JaMarcus Russell or receiver Calvin Johnson with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Owner Al Davis reportedly wants Russell, but offensive coordinator Greg Knapp -- who knows all too well the struggles relating to the development of a high-profile quarterback -- wants Johnson.

We're now told that, if the Raiders don't pick Johnson, the Lions plan to snare the Georgia Tech wideout with an eye toward promptly trading him.

It's a potential move that conjures memories of the deal that sent Eli Manning, the No. 1 pick in 2004, from the Chargers to the Giants for Philip Rivers, the No. 4 pick, and other picks that yielded linebacker Shawne Merriman and kicker Nate Kaeding.

Possible trade partners include the Buccaneers, the Redskins, the Vikings, and the Falcons. It's unlikely, however, that the Lions would swap Johnson to another NFC North team.

As to the Falcons, there is increased talk that the Atlanta football franchise would like to keep Johnson close to home.[/quote]

I'd like to see us go ahead and take Calvin Johnson and then work a trade with Tampa since they have the draft picks to make it work...

Using the trade chart as a just a rough guide, Tampa's second round picks (35 and 64) and their first next year work out almost exactly...

I would take Brady Quinn at 4 to give Kiff a QB that fits his system, then go ahead and add a WR in round two... We could even pick up Mike Williams on the cheap and draft Steve Smith to give Kiff a couple of WR's already familiar with him and his system...

Or we could go ahead and draft Adrian Peterson to give Walter (or McCown) the rainmaker at RB that will help take pressure off them, and still be able to add a highly regarded WR...

Figuring we can get a third from GB for Moss with Lord Farve to appease, we would have:

RD1: (pick 4)
RD2: (pick 33)
RD2: (pick 65)
RD3: (pick 66)
RD3: (pick 78)
RD3: (pick 99)
RD4: (pick 100)

and Tampa's 1st next year... with the abundance of 3rds, we could also pull a Patriots like move and trade one of them, say to the draft pick starved Skins for a 2nd next year giving us two #1st's and two 2nds next year...

Yeah, I'm bored silly...
:D

I could easily live with that scenario whether Quinn or AP at #4. Just get us a damned QB for God's sake. With the money saved by trading down and dealing Moss, we could re-work a deal for Burgess and hopefully Aso. Our defense would be intact for a few years.

Where do I sign the petition?

Sign me up.

Although I do seem to notice more and more 'strategy' threads poppin up during little Al crunch time...

I give it a 90% chance that we stay at the 1 spot. Not saying its the right move, and I dont know who we'll take, but Im pretty sure we'll be there April 28th.

Raiders master plan 2007-2008 v1.0

Draft Calvin Johnson #1 Overall
Trade Randy Moss and our 4th round pick to the Packers for #16 overall
#16 overall - Joe Staley or Levi Brown

Starting QB - Andrew Walter
Backup QB - Daunte Culpepper (aquired for 5th round pick)

Cut - Sims for cap relief

attempt to use any extra money to sign Burgess and Aso to the contracts they deserve

Starting Roster for preseason game 1

QB - Walter
FB - Griffith
RB - Jordan
WR - Johnson
WR - Porter
WR - Curry
TE - Rookie? Anderson? Madsen? Stewart?
LT - Gallery
LG - Grove
C - Newberry
RG - Boothe
RT - McQ/Staley/Brown

DE - Rookie? Kelly? Unnamed FA? Huntley? Brayton?
DT - Sapp
DT - Sands
DE - Burgess
LB - Howard
LB - Morrison
LB - Williams
CB - Asomugha
CB - Washington
FS - Schweigart
SS - Huff

I could deal with it.

I don't think we gain much cap relief by cutting Sims, same with LJ.

Sims actually gets us some good cap relief. the most relief? moving moss.

They would have, before we restructured/resigned them. Now, not so much I don't think (assumption, haven't looked it up)

Forget cutting Sims. He's our best tackle, people (brutal truth).

I would love the idea of drating CJ, and then trading him. What the Chargers did a few years ago was awe-inspiring.

But that's a game of high-stakes chicken we'd be playing, especially if our real target is one of the QBs. There's no guarantees that DET and CLE aren't trying to get one of the QBs. And if we are planning on getting our franchise QB in this draft, I don't wanna outsmart ourselves.

If we take away DET's trading power, maybe JaMarcus or Quinn is #2 on their board. And we know CLE has connections with both of them.

And we have to consider the history between Tampa and Oakland. Would Tampa be willing to get held up by Al Davis, for a WR? Makes me wonder.

If I was Bruce Allen and Chucky, maybe I listen to the offer, and maybe I just take Gaines Adams or Thomas.

If I knew for sure that JaMarcus would be there, I'd draft CJ in a second, and even take a lesser deal than what the Giants gave up.

But if the draft went:

Johnson
Quinn
Russell

---we're gonna have a lot of money tied up in WR, and be looking at Edwards, Stanton, or Kolb.

Right with you Mass. No sense trying to get "cute" and ending up with egg on our face. Just take the guy we want and get over it. Although after fudggin' the whole thing up you can hear it now...yeah Ted Ginn, Jr. was number one on our board all along. Arrrrrrrrrgh.

BTW, Cleveland has reportedly told JaMarcus there is no way he gets past #3. High stakes chicken game to be sure.

The only way I'd do a trade with TB is by contacting them in advance and tell them that we'll trade CJ to them if Player X (Quinn or Russel) that we want is available at that spot. If they draft him, then we can do the trade that would also net us TB's 2nd this year and at least their 2nd next year, if not their 1st.

If Russell was there at #4 I would actually be willing to swap CJ for Russell and just their 2nd rounder if thats all they were willing to give up. The value charts say we'd be getting screwed but in my mind walking away from the draft with Russell (at #4 pick money) and an extra high 2nd rounder is still a victory.

That would be a major coup in my mind. Particularly if we are going to take Russell if wen remain #1 anyway.

I will add that Cleveland or Detroit could very well take Russell before we get a chance. We would be left with an option of Joe Thomas, Brady Quinn, Gains Adams or Adrian Petersen, plus the 2nd rounder.

We could then move up & down all first day and nab guys like Dewayne Jarrett, Staley, Miller, Bowe, any number of players...

I'm sure many here would still be happy with that scenario. I must admit, it wouldn't hurt my feelings either (even though I'm very high on Russell & CJ for very different reasons).

All that being said, if there is one eye popping guy on our board, just take him at #1 and call it a day.

That probably is Al's mindframe and probably what happens, but it would sure be nice if we could get some picks from Tampa and still get Quinn at 4... I could see Quinn and Kiff developing a Gannon/Gruden first two in, last two to leave the facility best friends type dynamic...

Hey, you give me Tampa's two 2nds, their '08 1st and Brady Quinn come draft day and I'll fulfill all of your crossdressing bosum buddy 215 pound, 6'6 in hooker heels fantasies...
