Notre Dame/ LSU game thread????

I don't think Quinn's performance last night endeared him to the Raider Nation. I know it's only one game but...

Stick me in the Adrian Peterson column. Quinn is no John Elway and I think Al saw it last night. In fact I'm having coffee with him (Al) over at Pier 39 in San Francisco this morning and I'm gonna confirm some of the "breaking news" I've been hearing. I'm starting to think it was all bullshit! :p

Everyone always plays the 'only one game card' when its a bad performance, but in the eyes of scouts...This IS the biggest game of his career.

Bowl games can effect a players draft position by the rounds, not only a few picks (Vince Young wen't from a mid first round prospect to a co QB top ranking with Leinart last year after his performance)

Quinn blew it.

He dropped the ball, so to speak last night and Raider scouts undoubtedly saw it. I still think we need a QB, but I am more open to Peterson and Johnson than ever before.
I wasnt worried about the lack of yards, or Notre Dame getting blown out (LSU is a much better team) but it was Quinn missing open targets, not leading his receivers and looking lost that worried me most.

Yeah 007...Quinn's performance was disappointing. I think he's a huge gamble at #1. Yes I think he "blew" it.

Yeah it was only one game but I was watching. I saw him in other games and he looked decent but hey this is a huge decision for the Raiders and we just can't afford to make a mistake. The one thing I like about Quinn is that he runs that pro offense and seems pretty adapt at reading defenses. But the bottom line is you have to throw the ball and make plays. It's only going to get harder in the NFL.

I was an AP guy before the game and nothing I saw made me change my mind. Peterson or bust. Honestly, barring a huge trade down....I will seriously think about disowning this team if they do not draft Peterson.

Quinn really didn't show anything that warrants a #1 or top 5 for that matter. Hell Leinart didn't even go top 10 and I think he had a lot more upside coming out.

I'm all for the AP jihad or a trade down scenario

As for Russell, what can I say, I've watched the guy all 3 years he's played at LSU and even taught a class with him as a student. Up until 7 games ago I think you could sum up his college career as "disappointing." This year he had a 68.5% completion percentage which is up from about 55% the previous 2 years combined. I've never doubted Russell's physical abilities but his smarts and decision making have always held him back. It appears as though he's turned the corner somewhat. My problem is I'm not sure if this is the permanent new and improved Russell or just one hell of a stretch of games.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Akili Smith only had one real good year at Oregon. Same with Carson Palmer at SC. That's a hell of a fine line to walk there.

Well no wonder he was so nervous...

Like I said in another thread, Quinn reminds me of Eli Manning in that he is pretty damn good when there's a rhythym to the passing game, and pretty average when that rhythm is taken away... The thing that I didn't like the most was that he bird dogged his targets... Most young QB's do of course, but I wouldn't expect it as much out of a Weis coached QB... Quinn should really be hoping he lands in Tampa with Gruden because he would really be a great fit with what Gruden likes to do IMO...

Russell earned himself some loot last night but also showed some flaws... He doesn't really look off the safeties that well... His amazing arm strength allows him to get away with it in college, but the NFL is a whole other speedy world... If he lands with a coordinator with some guts that lets him be 'him', his upside is huge... Ironically, he's the type of QB that would be a great fit with a healthy Randy Moss... I'm not ready to abandon the Peterson bandwagon, but damn if I'm not considering it...

100% agreed. If we were going to go QB in the 1st round I'd MUCH rather have had Leinart than Quinn. Someone a while back tried to argue that Quinn plays well in big games. He doesn't. Leinart does (or did). Of course, that's a moot point now.

I'm still leaning towards Peterson, but Russell is moving me towards the fence little.

Damn sure is nice to know we get any player we want in Aprl

I have the exact same feeling! I'm a huge AP guy but after watching Russell last night it makes me seriously wonder. AW already has the arm and size but it's his lack of mobility that kills me, and most of our drives. Russell can flat out move and at 260 he's not going down easy (ala early Cullpepper). The combination of skills he brings to the table is crazy and it will be extremely difficult for Al to pass on them with the first pick imo. Let's put it this way, if we end up with AP, CJ, or JM we'll be better off regardless - it's a great problem to have.

Lets see how Troy Smith does before we decide yet who the Raiders next QB will be..........

If Russell declares, I'll have to cancel my membership to the Peterson jihad.

If it were up to me, I'd still take Peterson... but after what I saw last night, it's pretty obvious Russell is exactly what Davis envisions in a QB. Size, arm strength, mobility... plus he'd be a heck of a conversion to TE by the time he goes through his 4th offensive coordinator. Even Howie Long conceded that Russell has all the measurables a QB would need to be drafted #1 overall by Davis (and every Howie Long take I've ever heard regarding Davis has been dead on).

Personally, I'd rather roll the dice on a more cerebral QB in FA, and avoid drafting a QB who may be no better than Michael Vick in understanding NFL schemes... but I've also seen enough Davis drafts to know this is more than likely going to be a trophy pick.

Me too. I'm fickle that way!

BTW, can Russell rush the passer? See, lots of options if he fucks up the QB gig. :p

Fickle? You've bounced from AP to Quinn to AP to Jamarcus in about three days time... Paris Hilton doesn't jump on that many guys in a weekend... You whore!...

Bring on Paris. I'd hit it in a New York minute.

Quinn was a huge disappointment last night. The other team had him out manned? Just think what he's gonna face with the team he goes to in the NFL...talk about out manned...

Russell...I think he's worth the gamble. Those kind of measurables are hard to find. When was the ;last time a kid's arm was compared to that of John Elway?

I ALWAYS reserve the right to change my mind multiple times per day!

I am sure it's not so much changing his mind as not remembering what he was thinking in the first place.

bradshaw said he could throw it 85 yards in the air.

I know last night he chucked a touchdown pass 50 yards and he jumped into the throw. damn.

i wonder which qb has ever been measured to throw it the furthest?

i know there's a lot more to quarterbacking than having a good arm but it's more fun to talk about than how well a guy can recognize cover 2.

Well, Russell certainly looked awesome against the Irish last night and I thought Quinn looked poor. Quinn's throwing motion doesn't impress me and the ball came out slow and soft. He doesn't seem to be able to really put much zip on the ball and that will lead to a lot of INT's if he tries to throw that 15-yd. out at the next level.

that's what I've thought all along about Quinn, but all I kept hearing from people was what a great arm he had. Well, since I only watched a few ND games, I didn't really argue the point.

But damn, you put Quinn next to Russell, and there is a STARK difference.

Maybe Quinn's arm is adequate for the NFL. Hell, it's got to be stronger than Montana, Gannon, Garcia and others ... but let's please stop pretending he's the total package. He's not.

If Quinn warranted a #1 overall pick he would put this team on his back. Last night's game wasnt even close. Quinn looked inaccurate and flustered in the pocket. The running game was working for ND. I just dont see the flashes of greatness. All i hear is hype. J.Russell may not be the pick but id take him over QUinn right now. AP and CJ over both of them.

Agreed and I'd probably be happy with a trade down scenario to get Lynch/Branch to go along with Jarrett/Miller/Bush.
