I love this movie... I just watched a video on the man that wrote the book the movie was based on, a former Cowboys WR.. anyhow apparently the cowboys were not happy with the idea of the movie being made nor was the NFL. Apparently there were some shenanigans with the NFL pulling some assistance with the filming at the last minute, some players that were hired for roles that later backed out and some advisors that are thought to have been quietly blackballed by the league after.
I'm probably the last man on earth to know these things, but I also never knew that Fred Biletnikoff advised Nick Nolte how to play an NFL reciever and his character's on field style was modeled after him including his stance and route running... totally obvious thinking back at the movie..
Anyway its kinda cool... the video suggests its shady that Freddy didn't get any sniffs when the Raiders dropped him, I dunno about that... it also suggests Tom Fears was scouting for 3-4 teams and lost all employment after he consulted on the filming like Freddy... supposedly Cowboys DE Harvey Martin had agreed to a price to appear in the film and then just didn't show up, later saying it was in his interest to decline.. who knows?
Kinda wierd, watching the movie Nolte's moves seemed sort of familiar, plus that ridiculous "face mask" but I never put it together.
