This would be an amazing move, with Al getting up there in years. I really like Mayock's personnel breakdowns and Kirwan is right on most of the time:

Raiders to hire TV draft expert?

Posted by Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer on Thursday at 1:11 pm

If the television draft gurus are so good, why aren't they working for NFL teams?

The Raiders apparently think the NFL Network's Mike Mayock is more than a talking head, endlessly spouting the worth of upsides and 3-cone drills.

The word I'm getting is Mayock, who worked for ABC Sports, CBS Sports and Fox Sports Net before becoming Mel Kiper Jr.'s chief competition for the league-run NFL Network, is a serious candidate to become a personnel executive with the Raiders.

Mayock is one of a number of possibilities for what is seen as the inevitable replacement of Mike Lombardi.

Lombardi was involved in a much-publicized rift with Art Shell last season, with the former Raiders coach blaming the personnel man for being the source of anonymous quotes given to various media outlets criticizing the Shell regime in general and offensive coordinator Tom Walsh in particular.

Lombardi retained his position after Shell was fired and was even seen on the field at a recent voluntary minicamp practice. He had been banned from the practice field by Shell and was usually taking a jog around the Raiders facility during practice.

Why did Lombardi survive so long?

Because he had information regarding free agency and the Raiders' draft. Now that the Raiders team is virtually set except for a second wave of free agency, Lombardi can be freed to look for another job.

Mayock has been in television since 1996, even working as a reporter for NCAA Tournament basketball coverage from 1997-99, but was a safety at Boston College and was drafted by Pittsburgh Steelers in the 10th round of the 1981 NFL draft. His NFL career consisted of nine games for the New York Giants in 1982 and 1983.

While Lombardi had some administrative duties he assumed at the outset after Bruce Allen left to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, chances are Mayock, if he were hired, would concentrate on personnel.

Al Davis has the final say in all personnel matters, with Kiffin having more input than any other Raiders coach by virtue of his recruiting background at USC. Many of the administrative duties once handled by Allen are in the hands of Mark Jackson, Kiffin's hand-picked choice as director of football development.

Another name to keep in mind is Pat Kirwan, also an analyst for the NFL Network and NFLcom. Kirwan has a background in both coaching and personnel with the New York Jets.

Kirwan is close friends with USC coach Pete Carroll and is often seen on the sidelines at USC games, where Kiffin worked as an assistant coach.

The first whiff of Detroit quarterback Josh McCown coming to the Raiders came from a Kirwan report, and he was steadfast in his belief the Raiders would deal for McCown and draft Russell.

In Kirwan's recent story on NFL.com, he notes that Keyshawn Johnson was picked No. 1 overall by the Jets on his watch, and floats the idea that, "I always thought Johnson would finish his career on the West Coast, probably as a Raider."

Lane Kiffin, in a radio interivew on Fox Sports Radio, told host Chris Myers the other day he just happened to be watching a video cut-up of Johnson in action for the Carolina Panthers last season but was vague regarding his level of interest.

The Panthers cut Johnson a day after drafting another USC receiver, Dwayne Jarrett, in the second round.

In 2003, Kirwan, working on behalf of agent David Dunn, helped prepare Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer for the NFL draft. Kirwan ranked Dunn (I'm sure he means Plamer) as his top prospect on NFL.com, while at the same time accepting the a fee from the agent.

The NFL concluded there was no conflict of interest.

I like the idea of bringing mayock in. of the two that is.

Lombardi is out. I won't have someone in our FO that is just looking for a back to stab. But we need a cap guy in addition to a personel guy.

Interesting. I respect Mayock's opinion and he's easy on the ears. He seems to do his homework too.

Don't know about y'all, but I really don't want Keyshawn here.

Between he and Porter, the QBs would go crazy.

Tho often during the draft I had to fight back the urge to thay, "Thufferin' Thuckotath."

Mayock always gets pissed off arguing on the NFLN set... cracks me up.

We are getting slower every day it seems. Keyshawn? Hmmm Nows the time to convert Teyo to WR and bring him back.

Seriously Mike Mayock knows his shit. I'd accept him for now.

Mayock is absoluetly one of the best, if not the best collegiate football guys out there, he smokes Kiper

He would be a great addition to our FO

It all starts there, and if this is true, If I were Al, I'd make him a nice offer.

You see the Pats, they have a great FO staff

Come on wouldn't you guys like to have Kiper the face of the franchise at all those press conferences... stalking the sidlines in his Wayfarers and black leather trenchcoat :D

Mayock is setup pretty sweet with the NFLN right now. If I was in his shoes I wouldn't make the change unless it came with full GM power.

And if Keyshawn winds up here, we know it was because every team he wanted to play for wasn't interested.

Umm, this is exactly the kind of dickhead we just traded for a bag of beans. Let's go with the WRs we have. And the youth that we have.

This guy is a posession receiver, we're gonna put up with all this for a guy that catches 6 yard passes?

Cripes.

Kiper is a cipher. He compiles info he's grabbed from NFL scouts and passes it off as his own insights. He's obviously learned some things, but his work reads like a by-committee text-book.

Mayock, on the other hand, connects the dots in his commentary. He breaks down film very well.

I didn't watch a second of the draft on ESPN. I knew I'd have to deal with hairdo. I now know why Kiper keeps such a thick slab of hair, to prevent us from hearing his thoughts echo.

I don't know that we can give Keyshawn that much credit these days.

The problem with that theory is: What does he do now? NFLN might be a year-round job in name, but not in practice. There's very little of substance going to happen between now and Training Camp. And during the season, all the other analysts get thrown in the mix.

Hired a young, innovative head coach?

Hired a respected offensive coordinator?

Drafted a QB in the 1st round?

Traded back in the draft to acquire an additional pick?

Had a solid draft?

Coach made very accessable to the media?

Finally improved Raiders.com?

Thinking about hiring a respected draft analyst?

Who are these guys and WTF have they done with my football team?...

I'm down with Mayock... Kirwan's a pretty smart guy but his track record with 1st round picks with the Jets was pretty awful...

Somebody send HB a copy of "The Secret" before he fucks up the whole thing wishing for "his football team".

We've had enough of THAT football team.

I'm kinda surprised that you guys are seriously interested in a "TV" guy...

Why would Mayock want the job? My question is why wouldn't he?

The challenge, the prestige, the ego bust in building a team by following your own belief system.

He can ALWAYS get a job at NFL Network. Sheesh.

I don't know how much money he makes at NFLN, I do know that he just finished the 1st year of a 4 year deal, so he has job security.

Well, what would his role be here? Director of scouting? Would he oversee the scouting department? Is he really that qualified? He's been on TV, and seems bright, but really, as fans, what the heck do we know about scouts?

For all we know, NFL scouts watch NFLN, and say, "Can you believe this clown?"
