No conspiracy here, fellas

RAIDERS GET KNUCKLES RAPPED FOR OFFSEASON CONTACT

Finally, the NFL Players Association has taken action against one of the league's 32 teams for violating the rules regarding offseason workouts.

And, ironically, the franchise on the wrong end of the ruling is the same team for which NFLPA executive director Gene Upshaw once played.

Per a league source, the Oakland Raiders have been disciplined for violating the prohibition against offseason contact found in Article XXXV of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. According to the source, the problem arose from the intensity and tempo of the team's offseason practices.

But the penalty is minimal. Since all so-called Organized Training Activities have been completed in Oakland, the team will lose only one week of player workout time. Specifically, players will be prohibited from lifting weights or conducting any conditioning work at the club's facility during the week of June 18. Players otherwise would have been allowed to spend up to four days at the facility.

Despite language in the CBA indicating that coaches can be fined for violations of the offseason workout rules, we're told that no fine will be imposed on first-year coach Lane Kiffin.

It's unclear whether the issue arose because of a player complaint or because the NFLPA decided to act on its own. If a player complains, the union must investigate; the NFLPA otherwise has discretion as to whether an inquiry may be launched.

We're told that the process began with a letter from the union requesting video of certain practices. On Friday, the ruling was issued.

Moving forward, the question is whether this was an isolated incident, or whether the NFLPA will begin to do something about blatant violations of the no-contact rules. Just this week, there was clear evidence in the media that the Seahawks have been engaging in bump-and-run pass defense during offseason workouts. (The bump-and-run technique is listed in the CBA as one of the banned practices.) Also, Browns rookie tackle Joe Thomas said that the contact during offseason workouts in Cleveland has been more intense than the in-season practices with pads that he attended at Wisconsin. On Thursday, the Giants placed fullback Jim Finn on injured reserve after suffering a torn labrum while delivering a block during a practice in which there should have been no blocking.

As a matter of basic fairness, then, the union should start investigations in any city where there is reason to believe that the rules have been violated. We've got a feeling, quite frankly, that violations likely have occurred in every city.

Statement from Coach Kiffin
June 15, 2007

STATEMENT FROM OAKLAND RAIDERS HEAD COACH LANE KIFFIN:

“I was notified that the Player’s Union believes our total commitment to improving our football team has resulted in some violations of rules regarding practice standards. The union has complained about the high level of intensity, player aggressiveness and fast pace of our practices and, as a result, has taken away the final week of our offseason program.”

Dude sounds pissed. This was posted on raiders.com :) :)

Here's a good video of McCown talking about practice tempo: http://www.raiders.com/Multimedia/Default.aspx?id=88

This is about the lamest thing I have ever seen....

Here's Florio's address if'n you want to thank him properly, like I have, for constantly bringing attention to teams that violate the no contact rule...

– This wasn't the big, bad NFL coming down on the poor Raiders. It was the NFL Player's Association - ex-Raider Gene Upshaw's union - and there is a chance it started with complaints from within.

That interpretation makes the most sense to me. If indeed there still are a few nancy boys on the team who miss Art Shell's intrepretation of a practice, I say cut them right now. Set an example. If you're not on board right out of the gate, then don't let the door hit your fat, lazy, overpaid ass on the way out.

This could bring the team together a little bit. Nothing like a little spoonful of common enemy to engender an "us against the world" mentality. Looking for the silver (and black) lining isn't too tough here, because they really didn't lose much. I think it's interesting that this happened after the real OTA's were over, when the penalty would be less of an impact (Thanks Gene?).

So after our OTAs were already over and our players were dismissed until July minicamps, the NFL said that our players aren't allowed to lift weights at our facility for 4 days.

Um... so what?

Agreed. I gotta think the players might feel a sense of pride, on some "oh, it wasn't that bad, what kind of practices are other teams running?" type deal.

It's BS in the sense that we're not the only team that has "violated" this supposed rule. I do like the fact that Kiff has had the OTA's at 110%. This is a welcome change and hopefully continues this pace into the season.:D

I kind of liken it too when my kid played youth hockey prior to the pee wee level when you're not supposed to play the body but do anyway, and make a nice play and get 2 minutes for roughing or interference. Even though he has to sit, he still made the technically correct play.

Its nice that the coach is pushing the rules as far as they go. It shows he is taking everything he can get. Hopefully the players respect that.

We need a "who snitched" poll.

Put me down for Lamont.

I think he'd be the whinny bitch who would squeal too. LaMont isn't high on my greatest Raider list. He seems to be a malcontent. There were several instances last season that pointed to LaMont as a 'me' player. He talks a good game but is a better dancer than football player. I'm really rooting for Michael Bush to be the answer.

I'd have to concur, couldn't think of anyone else. Fugger can't stay healthy and isn't he whining about his contract? That well choreographed episode on the sideline when he didn't pick up the lateral vs the Niners was worthy of Oscar consideration. I'm really having my doubts about him running behind this new ZBS.

Im gonna be honest.

I have a crush on Lane Kiffin.

We'll see how long it lasts, but as of right now...Im smitten.

The thing is it didn't necessarily have to come from a player... Kiffin has been very open about making statements about 'Gallery nastily taking players to the ground' etc, and we've had articles written by our own press (and picked up by PFT) pointing out various contact... Another organization may have filed something or the NFLPA may have just stepped in because we were so blatant about it...

Judging by the overwhelming response we've gotten from players, I tend to believe the complaint came from outside... Let's face it, we have former Raider coaches within the division (Gunther, The Rat, Norv) that don't exactly have much love for us... or it simply could be Gene Upshaw getting a shot in for the way Al 'dissed and dismissed' his long time teammate and buddy Art Shell...

The penalty in and of itself is minor as Step pointed out, my only concern is that this will cause Al's paranoia needle to redline and he'll shut down the pretty much unprecedented media access we've enjoyed this offseason...

I would rather have this than a hundred and one delay of game penalties when it matters.

I wouldn't worry about the media access, HB. As I understand it, the NFL changed the rules this off-season so that it guarantees much greater media access with all teams. For instance, putting a ball gag on Tom Walsh and keeping him away from a mic can't happen anymore. If we want to dress him up in a gimp outfit, we've got to let reporters talk to him anyway.

From two different articles as well as what HB has said, regarding this BS, there was some positivity that came about. What is being said that triggered this whole thing was the comment made by coach Kiff:

On few occasions, Coach Kiffen was praising tackle Robert Gallery, he remarked the lineman had "gone in there (with a) nasty demeanor" and had been putting "players on the ground."

I would rather hear that then, the T-Rex was icing a sore elbo and couldn't reach.

On NFLN they were giving the Raiders credit for " Having a pulse" another backhanded compliment, but its pretty true. They said Raiders fans should be encouraged that the team is actually practicing to hard and intense, as opposed to the last few seasons.

I would rather have this than a hundred and one delay of game penalties when it matters.

Or the borderline "holding" penalty whenever we convert (or stop) a big 3rd down play. Or the "roughing" penalty when a Raider defensive lineman looks cross-eyed at the opposing QB.
