I think an interesting bit here was the part about Gallery and Sims battling it out at LT with the loser going to RT. Most the info so far stated Sims was automatically being penciled in at LT.

The Bucs could now turn their attention to trading for Houston quarterback David Carr.
Hilarious

This is the most stressful offseason I can remember. I am going to be happy when the roster is locked in and we finally get some of these questions out of the way. I do however think Kiffin is going to be a raging success. It seems getting along with the players is more important today than ever(Shell). Kiff seems like the type of guy who the players will relate to. I just hope we make some great draft picks.

I just posted this 5 times here sorry i didnt see the thread and i was excited. Newberry is a Raider! 1 year deal. Good work. A guy who want to be here who can push for the job. If healthy this guys a beast. Thats HUGE if.

PERSONNEL ANALYSIS

The Raiders signed free agent FB Justin Griffith to bolster the blocking for a rushing attack that struggled last season. Griffith is an above-average blocker who played under offensive coordinator Greg Knapp in Atlanta. Griffith is an accomplished receiver. Griffith doesn't have any glaring weaknesses. His arrival doesn't bode well for veteran RB Zack Crockett, though Crockett's salary cap figure makes it likely he will be kept around for one more season. The Raiders also signed C Jeremy Newberry. He likely will push incumbent center Jake Grove for the starting spot, with the loser expected to get a shot at playing guard. Newberry is fresh from yet another knee injury, though he claims to be closer to the player who earned two Pro Bowl selections than he is the one who played in only 11 games the past three seasons. This is a good move by the Raiders because the contract they gave Newberry protects them against his being unable to play or make the team, and it gives them a player capable of being a top-flight center if his knee holds up. Grove figures to benefit from Newberry's presence because he will be pushed to perform at a more productive level than he did last season.

I honestly think we'll only see the Raiders draft 1 offensive lineman out of this draft. For one, the club (i.e. Kiffin/Cable) want to evaluate the current roster in that area because it seems pretty clear to me that they take last year's lineplay as more of an aberration than anything else. Also, this draft isn't particularly deep at OT/OG so I could see them taking a guy in the 2nd (Blalock, Grubbs, Ugoh, Sears) or the 3rd (Ramirez, Yanda, Satele) but probably not much else.

Give me Grubbs to move into the LG or RG spot and move McQuistan to backup RT, IMO.

Yep.

I doubt we'll see a new starter on the 2007 line come fromthe draft.

We just have to hold our breath, and hope the coaches can make chicken salad.

Man I hope not. Khalil would be the best thing we can do for this OL. Newberry is a huge ? Grove just plain out sucks. Morris is PS fodder. Pretty impressive resume coming out of Mich St but let's face it, he couldn't crack this abortion of an OL.

That seems like a bad thing that Morris couldn't get into the starting lineup, but Curry was behind Whitted at one point so who knows. Personally I agree that Khalil would be a great pick up. He does an excellent job of getting to the second level.

I think it probably had as much to do with the Raiders (and Art Shell) wanting some continuity along the line. Setting aside scheme, etc. the best way for any O-line to gel is to have as much continuity as possible. Besides, when you have guys like Grove, Gallery & Walker that were all drafted on Day-1, they will naturally get the nod over 5th & 6th round guys. Kevin Boothe was only inserted because McUgly was such a disaster & he was a rookie.

I think most of us considered last year to be the "last shot" for the 3-headed monster to suceed. Now Walker is gone, Grove will have to fend off competition from Jeremy Newberry and possibly a draft pick and most reports indicate that Gallery will face real camp competition for the 1st time during his Silver Spoon existence at this level. Bout' fuckin' time BTW.

I think we'll go Russell/Johnson with our 1st pick and then we'll see a Day-1 O-lineman and a Day-1 D-lineman.

That is the best strategy in my thought process.

One thing I like about Morris is he's the type of guy that is really intelligent and has all the smarts to man the center position, one thing I'm not so sure Grove has.

Morris had a pretty impressive resume coming out of Mich State. I believe he was like a 4 year starter if not mistaken. I agree Freak that Grove may not have all the smarts to play C in the NFL. He may be better suited to moving to guard where he doesn't have to orchestrate the blocking assignments.
