James Cameron's TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY (1991), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton and Robert Patrick, was released in theaters on this day 35 years ago. At the 64th Oscars, the film received six nominations, winning four.

Saw Toy Story 5 last night.

Slight film. Lacked the humor and pathos of I-III but much better than the abysmal IV. Not sure what the critics saw but it is not a 90+ fresh movie. More like 6.5/10

  1. Repeated theme of stressing over abandonment. It is a dead Bullseye at this point. It worked in the first two films and, despite III's overrated reputation, it mostly worked there. Now, with lesser talent at Pixar, it is shopworn. Say what you will about the Cars franchise (Pixar's best, yes I said it!), but every film dealt with a different theme. Toy Story repeats the "oh, no, is it over for us?"
  2. Woody's return brought nothing to the table. The movie would have been stronger with just Buzz.
  3. He and Buzz's conflict was contrived and solely generated for cheap drama that petered out. They are best friends, Pixar, and trying to rescue Jessie. They are mature enough now to dissolve into shallow fighting.
  4. IV's flaw of sidelining the epic supporting cast for lamer, new sidekicks returned.
  5. The whole toys vs. technology theme felt muddled and about 15 years too late. Then, it was suddenly dropped.
  6. Woody and Buzz are whipped to hell.
  7. I liked that none of IV's new characters received anything more than cameos. Thank God!
  8. The theater barely laughed at any of the jokes. Some slight chuckles but no laugh-out-loud moments.
  9. The mid-credits scene was great. A different crew must have worked on it.
These critical lines worked for me: "needs new batteries ... It is played out and IP exhaustion has set in."

Verdict: wait for Disney Plus and pray Toy Story VI isn't greenlit.
 
Old Henry was pretty good.

Wish they would have held off with the reveal a little longer but still worth the watch

Watched that a few yrs ago on a whim so went in with zero expectations and came out pleasantly surprised
