Big crowd greets Bears

Northwest Herald

[published on Thu, Aug 10, 2006]

CHICAGO – The Bears worked out in front of 22,000 fans Wednesday night at Soldier Field to help players get into a game mode before Friday's visit to San Francisco.

"It's one thing to be down [in Bourbonnais] and practice out there," coach Lovie Smith said. "But there's nothing like coming to Soldier Field and getting a chance to practice in front of the fans. It was a good dress rehearsal for us."

Wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad elicited a groan from the crowd by dropping a sure touchdown pass from Grossman, but came back to catch a score from Brian Griese.

Kicker Robbie Gould might have been the star of the night. He made field goals from 50 and 55 yards and seemingly widening the gap between him and challenger Josh Huston, who missed from those two distances.

Health check

Wide receiver Bernard Berrian (hip flexor) missed another practice and will be a game-time decision. Tight end John Gilmore (back) is in a similar situation. Defensive tackle Tommie Harris and safety Chris Harris returned from hip flexor injuries Wednesday night.

Coming along

Running back Thomas Jones, out since the beginning of training camp, with a strained right hamstring, has looked good while jogging and doing agility exercises on the sideline during practice.

Jones, though, does not yet have a return date in mind. The Bears will play Friday night without him or Cedric Benson (shoulder).

"Everybody's taking their time with it just to make sure I don't pull it again," Jones said. "That's the worst thing you can do, reinjure it and it takes longer to heal."

Rumors abound

Defensive lineman Michael Haynes, who has been out for the better part of a week with a back strain, was absent from practice for the second consecutive night.

Published reports in both Denver and Oakland suggest Haynes might be trade bait for Ashley Lelie or Jerry Porter, disgruntled receivers in those two towns. Nothing appears imminent on the Bears' end, however.

Uncertain future

Fullback Bryan Johnson's hamstring injury is significant, but not as severe as originally feared.

Johnson, who tore the muscle during practice Saturday and underwent an MRI on Monday, indicated he could be back to action in as soon as six weeks. If the muscle had come off the bone, he would have had to miss the season.

But the Bears might not be able to keep Johnson on their active roster. Doing so would mean retaining three fullbacks – with Jason McKie and rookie J.D. Runnels – for the first part of the season.

Transaction mill

With Tank Johnson (quadriceps), Ian Scott (knee) and Haynes all nursing injuries, the Bears added to their depth at defensive tackle Wednesday by signing Delbert Cowsette to a one-year contract.

Cowsette spent 2001-02 with the Washington Redskins. His most recent playing stint was this year in the Arena League with the New York Dragons.

Practice Planner

Today-Saturday, no practice.
