I've thought about starting this thread for a while, but I'm sure everyone is tired of it. But we shouldn't be. I work for a humane society and I've seen what happens to these dogs - they all die pre-maturely - either by fightin or by euthanasia because they unadoptable due to their training. Some compare it to hunting or horse racing, but The comparison is ludicrous. It completely disregards the responsibility humans must shoulder for our domestification of these once-wild animals to suit our own purposes. For centuries humans altered the breeding and genetics of these animals so they can no longer survive well in the wild and are dependent on us for safety and nourishment. Along the way millions of companion animals were killed for not being the best (look at they Greyhound breeding techniques of this century) and answering our attempts to 'improve' their physical attributes.
The original pit bulls, called "bull and terriers," were a cross between a bulldog and an English black and tan terrier and came over from England in the 1800's. The dogs were so calm around children and humans they were nicknamed "nanny dogs." We are responsible for dogs and cats in our modern world, and though dog fighting was once more common and legal, we have evolved as a species to no longer tolerate the barbaric 'sport'. Domesticated animals are what we train them to be and those who train them to fight should be imprisoned.

My wife and I just adopted a dog and after learning of her history it is so sad to think of what she went through before.

From the looks of it, she was being used in a puppy mill. They found her wandering while she was 9 months pregnant and severly malnurished. She was also heart worm positive. Upon finding her, the vet called the owner (she still had tags on) and said they would do all of the medical for free if it was a question of money. The owners said yeah and then never came to pick her up and were un-reachable after that. The vet says that the current pregnancy was her 2nd and at a young age. So it looks like they were just breeding her to make money. They had to abort the litter because she would have died giving birth since she was so malnurished. The people that fostered her got her weight up somewhat and she has had her HW treatments.

So far she is a wonderful dog and is alot of fun and we are amazed that anyone would let her go like that.

Not the same as dog fighting, but in searching for a dog to adopt we read countless sad stories.

As for the Michael Vick thing, this for me has tarnished his image forever. I know he is innocent until proven guilty, but he, like Pacman and Tank has seemed to have trouble follow him and I can't be convinced he didn't know what was going on at his own property. So I think the guy is a grade a scumbag and hope he loses millions of dollars over this (which it looks like endorsement wise he will) and that fans of his start to see him in a different light. I already had a bad opinion of him and this just made it alot worse.

RNorris - Thanks for sharing your story. Gold star for you and your family. I won't go into the horror stories of my experiences, but I can say honestly that if you want to know the character of an individual, you can do worse than paying attention to how they treat their pets.

Thanks man.

We had to put down a dog last year (she was my dog as I got her when she was 2 months old) and she was like a child to us. So the house had seemed empty without a dog running around having fun. My wife was really into the rescue thing and after reading some of the stories it was heart wrenching.

The people that deserve alot of credit are the fosters. They bring an animal into their house and help nurse it back to health and then watch it go to a forever home. I know that is rewarding to them in a sense, but I know the people we got our dog from were bummed to see her go. I guess they do 3 or 4 fosters a year and they said it is hard to let go.

What do you do for the humane society?

People with lots of money and a team of high powered attorneys always seem to circumvent punishment... Because of that, I'd be surprised if Vick is imprisoned even though I have very little doubt he's heavily involved... I mean how long before guys like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton start getting involved and banging the race drums and pushing their own agendas?... IMO, Vick will plead to a fine and ultimately get probation in all liklihood...

I'd like to see PETA just save the taxpayers some money... Commando up, pull a snatch and grab, douse Vick with some meat and gravy and throw him into the ring with some of those dogs...

"Put up again thy sword into his place. For all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword."

I've never been to a dog fight, though with the popularity of the breed here, the fights no doubt exist... As a kid I used to sell fish at chicken fights to make money though, and dog fights like chicken fights are no doubt just another way to make money through gambling and drug promotion...

I love dogs but I'll admit I am not a fan of the Pit Bull breed... I don't care how tame or domesticated it's owners claim it to be, if someone with a Pit enters a dog park or beach that we're at, we pick up our stuff and leave... I have heard way too many horror stories about domesticated Pits surprisingly turning to take any kind of risk with my daughter or dog... Better safe than sorry IMO... They've been banned in some cities for a reason...

You're a good man Rick... nice story...

I agree with you on the Pits HB.

I have known a few people that have had them in the past and they have been nice dogs. But given all the stories you hear about them turning, I am always very cautious when I see them. I know alot of it has to do with how they are handled and trained, but still there are way too many stories out there about kids or family members getting mauled. Sad that people have bred the dogs to become like that.

And sadly I agree with you that Vick will probably get off with just a fine. He has enough cash to live and losing endorsements won't kill him. Not too mention, we all know that if the Falcons were to release him, some other team would pick him up and pay him.

Make no doubt about it, Pit bulls were bred in England to be better fighting dogs than bulldogs and they are. Many stories you hear about "domesticated" pit bulls turning are false. After investigation, most always the animals were abused, but what else is the owner going to say, "yeah we kick her around a bit and she's snapped a few times, but whoa man, nothing like this before." No way man. they say wow she's always been so nice and we've never mistreated her and she's never done something like this before.
The issue is that Pit Bulls have the capacity (and breeding) to do al ot of damage when they snap at you. We've all had a dog snap at us I'm sure, but if it's a miniature poodle who cares. It's almost funny. But when a pit snaps it can kill and shred.
Oh, and I am the fundraiser for the organization. Yep, that's right. The money man.

First off, Michael Vick is toast. Have you read the actrual indictment? They have this guy nailed to the cross. You can read the whole indictment here in PDF format. They have names, dates, aounts bet, names of the dogs (the participants)...the works.

Additionally they have witnesses and although the witnesses are likely scum bags themselves there has been a precedent set with the flipping of mobster after mobster who turned Federal informant in the 80's and 90's to rat out their Mafia bosses. Each of these resulted in convictions of people like John Gotti, Joseph Massino, Paul Castellano (actually Paul got whacked before they could return the verdict), etc. When these witnesses come up with the names, places, and details of these dog fights and other details it will be very compelling to a jury. Additionally as each witness ratifies what the last scum bad said it will be even more powerful. These guys will know and be able to tell things only those involved could know.

Plus it's almost certain that one or more of the other three indicted in the complaint will likely flip too and finger Vick in order to receive a "deal" from the government. Handing Vick over to save their own skin will be a no brainier.

No I don't think Vick will be able to weasel out of this one. His NFL career is over and he is sure to do jail time.

Innocent until proven guilty? Nah...not in this case. Read the indictment. The Feds are good at this and they don't screw around. They have this clown by the balls.

This is such a heinous activity that nobody will be swayed by minor technicalities. They seem to have Vick present and the paper trail of the money invested to set up Bad Newz Kennels ( ) leads directly to Michael Vick. Don't see how he could possibly weasel out of this. And the Feds aren't going to allow a plea bargin that would amount to a slap on the risk. The outrage would be tremendous.

I'm already sick of hearing Vick apologists comparing friggin' dog fighting to a hunter shooting a quail. Not exactly in the same league.

Anyway, fuck Michael Vick. he's the worst kind of scum.

One last thing...the Pit Bull breed has been ruined by all the inbreeding and these dogs simply cannot be trusted. People who insist on having this kind of animal around children need some counseling. It doesn't take much for a dog like that to 'snap" and when they do as R4Life mentioned they are destructive to say the least. Brutal. It's a damn shame.

We adopted a red doberman from the Humane Society a few years ago. She's turned out to be real nice family dog. Very nice disposition around people and also very compatible with our two other dogs and two cats. The good thing is that she is very intimidating looking to strangers when she's running around the fenced yard but has never once shown any aggressive tendencies towards humans.

As far as pitbulls are concerned, most of the one's I've run into have been fine around humans, although admittedly, their nasty reputation precedes them and they are intimidating looking to say the least. I do believe that some dogs are just genetically disposed to aggression. I bought the old lady a doberman pup from a puppy mill (big mistake) before we got the other doberman. The dog growled and bit the gf twice in the first week (at 10 weeks old) . They weren't play bites either. Needless to say, the dog isn't in the house anymore.

I agree with Bones on the Vick situation. These aren't the local Mayberry Barney Fife types that Vick will be dealing with. It's not going to be the usual walk in the park like most athletes get. What a dumb ass.:pound:

they are to busy hunting down Paris Hilton for that mink collection she has.

I never liked PETA. They are a little on the psycho side.

Vick is an idiot. Dont know if call him a sicko. Dog fighting happens more often than some may know. If this is used as a way to shed light on it as a whole, cool. But if this is an attempt to make an example of Vick, waste of taxpayer dollars and time. Because like Hboy said. He's not doing any time and the only value is in smear campaigning on him as hard as you can.

You're kidding right? Wasting the tax payers money? Making an example of Michael Vick? Dog fighting happens more than we think? And that somehow makes it OK or something? That low life did it to himself. You think the federal government doesn't have anything better to do than follow a scum bag like Vick around? Information comes to light that Vick and his buddies are running a dog fighting ring getting their kicks watching helpless animals tear each other to pieces and you think it's a witch hunt targeting Michael Vick? Get a clue man. Vick is a scum bag. End of story. I hope he rots in jail and never plays another down in the NFL and frankly I think there is a very good chance of both those things happening. For that I say bravo to the investigators.

Now I see the NFL, NFLPA and the Falcons are "encouraging" Vick to take a leave of absence to deal with his legal issues. Clearly the NFL doesn't want to be associated with a sack of shit like Vick. And, can anybody blame the NFL? I certainly don't.

As an aside to this I really think that companies like Nike handing out huge endorsement deals to these guys before they have played even one pro game is really irresponsible.

I know Tiger was one of the first and the worked out pretty well but come on. This kid Durant gets 80 mil before he plays a single real pro game? Michelle Wie? Neither have broken the law but both are young and haven't won shit yet. Why put them on that pedestal? They could disappear and would never have to work again and that is just a sad statement about our working class.

I know this is part of our culture and these companies only do this because these guys are marketable and they make money for them, but it is really stupid. Give a 20 year old a few mil and there will most likely be problems.

Anyways, that is my rant. I am all for them making cashish with their team and working for it, but getting the big payday before even playing one real season pro game is really lame.

I don't either. My Dad made a great point today. Given the deals with Tank and Pacman they are one thing. But as he said, doing this kind of shit to animals is like killing babies in most peoples eyes.

And for that I hope Ron Mexico does time. I still have little faith in our justice system and think he will get off with a fine, but who knows.

The NFL has a hard one with this case as it is going to bring along of shit with it. Much like the NBA and that fucking Ref.

Mike Vick needs to be strung up by the nuts. Or, better yet, strapped into one of those rape chairs they had on his property and butt fucked til his eyes fall out!!

i AM NOT AN ANIMAL LOVER BY ANY STRETCH, BUT DOG FIGHTING IS A SICK, SICK DEAL!

I think we have seen the last of Vick, barring any aquittal or bad deal like that. Due will be black balled!

Nice dog, Bones. Did you give him a Raider name? Good to see he is okay.
Thanks AP.

Nope, no Raider name. His name is "Kelan" which is Gaelic for "Slender Lad"...you know being an Irish Setter and all he needed an appropriate name. (He's a skinny boy).

Nice pooch, Bones.

Dog Fighting = Hunting only if your hunting in a zoo.

I have two cats, Snake and Ghost. Only the true understand.

Anyone who thinks Ookie's not doing time isn't understanding the case and the external pressures being brought to bear. Se ya, dog killer. Enjoy hell.
