Supposedly Merriman has been suspended for 4 games becasue of roids

I post this cause I was thinking today about what the team would be like with him and Burgess( not sure we'd have picked him up if we'd have drafted Merriman...) bookending the defense... the D just looks so fast and young... if we had an impact player at the line of scrimmage, it could be scary...

Not that I really regret snatching Randy, just seems that with him not recieving solidly lately(who knows why...? ) that we could be getting a similar performance from a happy Porter(I know dreamland :D )

Anyhow, how do think this affects Sady Eggo's defense?

Shaun Phillips also went down today with injury... If that's serious, the Chargers lost both rush LB's to go with Olshansky being out...

Gonna be a tough road for that D... puts a lot of pressure on a new starting QB as well... I think they'll be happy to end up 8-8

I'd be happy to end up 8-8.

Whoever plays the Chargers the next 4 weeks should have a better chance to win....Philips and Merriman were the team sack leaders...and both are out for at least 4 weeks.

IS this True?? I haven't heard but I haven't been able to see much football this past weekend. I only got to hear the first 3 quaters of the Raiders game on Siruis.

I guess so from PFT.com

LIGHTS OUT FOR MERRIMAN

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the NFL has suspended Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman four games for violating the league's steroids policy.

A source told Mortensen that the report was "definitely for steroids . . . not one of those supplement deals." The policy, officially known as the "National Football League Policy on Anabolic Steroids and Related Substances," is more commonly violated when a player takes a supplement that includes a banned ingredient, such as ephedra.

We're also intrigued, frankly, by the fact that Mortensen cited both league and "team" sources in support of his report. Per the NFL's steroids policy, "[a]ny Club or Club employee that publicly divulges, directly or indirectly, information concerning positive drug tests or other violation of this Policy (including numerical summaries or specific names of persons) or otherwise breaches the confidentiality provisions of this Policy is subject to a fine of up to $500,000 by the Commissioner." Though Mort's report doesn't mention anyone on the team by name, the mere fact that someone spilled the beans should be enough to draw a fine.

Back to Merriman, the suspension does little to alleviate concerns that the Chargers are one of the thuggiest teams in the NFL. On the field, the absence of Merriman is another blow to a defense reeling from injuries, both from incidents on the field (Igor Olshansky) . . . and incidents off of it (Steve Foley).

Maybe, in the end, the Cowboys knew what they were doing when they surprisingly passed on Merriman in the 2005 draft.

Steve Foley, is he the Congressman? ;)

But seriously. As often as someone said, "He's a monster," about Merriman, shouldn't we have suspected somethign was up? Nah! We all like the natural monsters. Though this is another arrow in the quiver of the people who say guys can't be as big as football players without supplementing themselves some way. Sigh.

What did Olshansky do?

So does Merriman come back looking like Alvis Witted or what? :D

Cruel. Cruel. But that would be funny wouldn't it.

Hurt his knee against us...

Let's not be naive and think that a good portion of NFL players aren't juicin', but that's two Bolts that have been clipped (Merriman, Castillo) for sure... and Igor was known around Oregon for being on the program...

I'd still kill to have a front 7 like SD's... They've got alot of good young talent there...

Merriman is appealing his suspension....claims it was in some kind of supplement or something that he was using....

Ah yes, the good ole, it was in an OTC supplement I was using excuse.

I don't know if I buy that. These guys are pro athletes that stand to make and lose alot of money depending on what they take. I would think that they would be a little more careful.

I am not saying this isn't the case with Merriman (we might never know), I just find it funny that these guys would go to a GNC and buy something that could end up costing them hundreds of thousands of dollars in game checks without knowing it.

I would also think that pro teams would have a coach (nutritionist or strength coach) that would provide supplements (paid for by the team) to take or at least a list of what is acceptable and what is sketchy (ie. from a reputable company or not)

That's my rant on it.

even if the excuse is legit. he was supposed to know what he's taking. I dont accept that he didnt. Either he's ridiculously irresponsible and gullable as a 12 year old or trying to keep his image intact.

Exactly.. when you're getting paid that kind of jack, you can afford to read the damned label, or hire someone else to read the damned label.

As one of the few who toured the Raiders' facilities with Bones years back. There's an NFL-hired drug testing specialist in an office in every team's facilities. It's mandated. You buy a supplement, you bring it by his office, he checks the league's list and tells you if it's okay. Now maybe he's not available to do that, but he should be. If the league wants to keep it's nose clean, it should be reaching out to athletes.

Next thing you know Merriman will claim the team trainer gave it to him. And then it will be he thought it was Ben Gay. Or maybe that his body naturally produces excess testosterone after a night of binge drinking.
