MCCOWN WINS QUARTERBACK CHALLENGE

To the extent that anyone cares, a reader in the Cayman Islands tells us that Raiders quarterback Josh McCown won the 2007 Quarterback Challenge, which was conducted today at the Cayman Islands International School Park.

McCown was traded to Oakland from Detroit, where he signed as a free agent after his rookie contract with the Cardinals expired. He has 22 career starts in five years.

He might be the starter with the Raiders when the 2007 season begins, but he likely won't be when it ends, given that the team selected JaMarcus Russell with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

But, hey, no one can take away from McCown the fact that he won a meaningless event that won't be televised until August.

If its meaningless why the fuck are they reporting it?

I think the pro-bowl is meaningless too but its still a nice achievement. PFT are a bunch of haters.

Well, then. I guess I'll watch this year.
Good for him.
Is it too much to hope for a Gannon clone? I suppose so. He won't be given the time to develop here with JR in the wings...

I am hoping for a healthy 10-16 starts for him.

And a wonderful career in the NFC after 2007.

It'd be nice if we could get a Kitna-type, quality, backup around here for a while.

A guy we know can give us starting quality play for a couple/few game stretch.

That he's mobile is a plus too... I like having a backup with a different skill set than the starter to keep opponents off balance.

I'm totally behind Jamarcus, so don't get me wrong, but I can't shake the feeling that I'd be happier with McCown/Walter + Calvin Johnson right now.

I guess I just don't know that much about McCown to be excited. But the fact that we drafted J-Russ, a dude that can throw footballs thru you're chest, and the addition of Dominic. That alone gives me hope for the season.

Not sure if J-Russ will even see the field this year (hope so at some point, just to see what we got a the pro level), but it could be the beginning of something exciting in Oakland for a change........

You know, in a weird way I almost hope the Raiders go 6-10 or 7-9 ... it would be a good problem to have, sure, but if McCown were to have a Kitna-in-Cincinnati type of year, then what? We can't re-sign him to be Russell's backup, and we can't pay him enough to keep him around as a starter for another year.

But if he does enough to prove he's a competent backup, but not enough that other teams are legitimately interested in him as a starter, then maybe we can keep him longterm at a good price.

Who was McCown competing against in this? Joey Harrington and Byron Leftwich? Or was there someone legitimate out there?

Speaking of Leftwich, I still don't understand why Jacksonville handed him the starting job without competing for it. Major error IMO and the guy didn't even work out with the team apparently.

Apparently he isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. I'm VERY glad we didn't make a run at this overated stiff.

I agree. He's immobile and injury prone, and he does have a long windup... that'd get him killed here.

Too bad for the jags cause they've got a pretty nice team everywhere else. Maybe they should have gone after McCown?

I find the JRuss and Leftwich comparisons laughable.

meh i dont find them that laughable (as far as prospect)

Both had big arms but had accuracy

were considered good leaders but quiet

Leftwich had concerns about his "windup"(luckily russell has an above average release speed)

Russell is more mobile

at the time i felt that leftwich was the better player then palmer (i was wrong) and i feel that russell is a better player then quinn(i think im correct here).

lefty can still be a good qb but he needs an OL that can keep people off of him and better possession type WRs to reach his potential. Russell doesnt need that.

Lefty has had ZERO help form his WR core. Matt Jones is a freaking QB playing WR. Thats not exactly a weapon for a young QB. The other wideouts are Mehh and the line is average. Byron needs to step it up, no doubt. But i wouldnt be suprised to see him turn it around. The should have traded for Moss, haha.

Um. According to Monte Pool Curry has been named starting flanker. JRuss has one of those too. :)

Yeah but Matt Jones was a mid first round pick right? They are lucky they struck gold with M.J.Drew because in im opinion they havent given Lefty too much to work with. Earnest Wilford, Reggie Williams, Kyle Brady and always hurt Fred Taylor? Thats not exactly alot of help.

Curry is awesome but he was a late round project. Im glad he made it but he has yet to be consistant year in and year out. I hope he can stay healthy because he has really come along way fromt he guy I saw diving to catch punts a few years back(if anyone remembers that fumble that basically lost us a game). I used to pull my hair out watching him on ST. He is easily one of the fan favorite's now. Matt Jones has been a bust so far, he needs to stay on the field too.
