If Pepp has a good to great type of year, you're looking at an NFL Probowl Vet who isn't going to work for peanuts not to mention he will want to start not be a number two guy.
Yep... if he proves himself effective and healthy, he's certainly going to look for a long term situation/long term contract....
If Pepper proved to be an effective starter, (assuming he's the starter), it leaves us in an interesting situation going into next offseason... I'm sure the general idea was to have JaMarcus as the starter going into the '08 season, but should Pepper play well, JM probably won't see regular season action in addition to missing the preseason games... Just how comfortable would we be heading into next offseason with very little idea of how projected starter JaMarcus reacts to gameday action?...
I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that Andrew Walter WON'T be the primary starter, but even if he's not, I think we have to keep him just to have some continuation going into next year... JaMarcus will be playing catchup all year once he signs, and there's no way of knowing how his knowlege of the playbook will translate to the field unless for some reason he finds his way onto the field this season... I think the smart play is to have JaMarcus and Walter as your top two heading into next year instead of having JaMarcus and two new QB's learning the system... Even if Walter doesn't start, I don't think the 3rd round pick we spent on him is an unreasonable cost for a reliable backup QB...
I admire McCown's work ethic and attitude and I really appreciate that his helmet fits on his head way better than Pepper or Walter's, but he looks to be the expendable one at this point if we do decide to cut the 4 to 3 once JaMarcus signs... Though I wonder if there isn't some roster exception or PUP list JaMarcus could be put on since he would be such a late sign?...
On another note, how would any of you like to be a member of a Dolphin's message board should the two guys they let leave (Pepper, Harrington) and the Fish fan favorite they passed up (Brady Quinn) blow up and Trent Green flops?...
