Marty out in SD

Just heard Mort reporting this on ESPN.

Apparently there were disagreements on how to fill out the coaching staff after the recent defections.

Meh...um, who cares. :D

Man the whole coaching staff gone. Think Marty would want the gig as our QB coach?

Sources: Chargers head coach Schottenheimer fired
ESPN.com news services

Sources close to Marty Schottenheimer and the San Diego Chargers said the coach was fired by the team Monday, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported.
Schottenheimer and Chargers general manager A.J. Smith have been having disagreements over staffing after losing a number of assistants. Dean Spanos, the team president, told Schottenheimer on Monday that it wasn't going to work between him and Smith.
Three days after the Chargers melted down in a stunning 24-21 playoff loss to New England, Spanos decided that bringing Schottenheimer back for the final year of his contract gave San Diego its best chance to win.
Schottenheimer, though, declined the team's offer of a one-year extension for 2008 worth $4.5 million, with a $1 million buyout.
"Right now, I wasn't comfortable accepting it," Schottenheimer told the Associated Press shortly after the season. He would have earned more than $3 million in 2007.
With a regular-season record of 200-126-1 with Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington and San Diego, Schottenheimer is the most successful coach never to have reached the Super Bowl.

I'll be real curious to see the candidates that come out of the woodwork to coach a young 14-3 team featuring the league MVP, arguably the best LB in football, and the opportunity to live somewhere that's 75 and sunny in January.

Parcells?
Cowher?
Carroll?

If the Chargers can't get an A+ coaching candidate down there, then AJ Smith needs to get the shit canned as well.

That would be classic if they cant get one of the best coaching candidates right now...this is good news though for Raiders fans though! The entire coaching squad for them has just falling apart haha!

Carroll to Bolts?

Don't know that this would bother me. PC wasn't very good in the NFL.

SCHOTT FIRED

The San Diego Chargers, their coaching staff decimated by the loss of offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, and linebackers coach Greg Manusky, have fired head coach Marty Schottenheimer.

The move comes nearly four weeks after it was announced that Schottenheimer would be back for 2007.

And now that a new crop of recruits have signed on to attend USC, we wouldn't be surprised to see the Chargers court, and land, Trojans coach Pete Carroll.

In a statement issued by the team on Monday night, president Dean Spanos attributed the move to a "dysfunctional situation," and that an "intense search" for a successor will begin.

"Our fans deserve to know what changed for me over the last month," Spanos said. "When I decided to move ahead with Marty Schottenheimer in mid-January, I did so with the expectation that the core of his fine coaching staff would remain intact. Unfortunately, that did not prove to be the case, and the process of dealing with these coaching changes convinced me that we simply could not move forward with such dysfunction between our head coach and general manager. In short, this entire process over the last month convinced me beyond any doubt that I had to act to change this untenable situation and create an environment where everyone at Charger Park would be pulling in the same direction and working at a championship level. I expect exactly that from our entire Charger organization in 2007."

Although G.M. A.J. Smith has not yet been fired, keep in mind that the bulk of a front office's work is done in the days leading up to free agency and the draft. Come early May, we've got a feeling that Smith will be sent packing, too.

Back to Carroll, we're not swayed by the fact that Spanos promises an "intense search." If he says now that Carroll is the guy, the Chargers will never be able to comply with the Rooney Rule, which requires that at least one minority candidate be interviewed for the job.

Regardless of where the team goes next, the move marks a stunning end to an otherwise stellar season.

I dont care who they get becasue Marty was a really good coach. At least during the regular season, and we play them twice every year. He may choke, but as far a being a Raiders fan im glad he wont be going against us anymore.

What a bunch of fuckin boneheads

Hey man, with the Chiefs Shields retiring that OL is all fucked up..Broncos are average, and if the Chargers struggle, I could see the AFC West divisional winner sitting at 8-8 or 9-7

Fuck Marty. Oh, and the next time Charger Fan brings up Jon Gruden, be sure to remember how Marty got shit-canned after leading the team to a 14-2 record.

And they say we do things assbackwards.... Gotta wonder why they didn't do this early if they were going to do it and then just bump up Cameron or Phillips to keep some continuity?... A 14-2 team losing almost their whole staff? I hope this blows up in AJ Smith's arrogant ass...

The way this went down with AJ and Spanos waiting till all the other coaching jobs were filled, I'd put hate aside and hire Marty just to do the pregame speech before we play the Bolts... His hate for AJ will make his previous hate for us look pale in comparison... :D

If they were smart, they'd give up their 1st round pick or whatever to Pitt and work out some deal with Cower, but it's probably going to be Pete Carroll... Ironically, Kiffen probably would've been his offensive coordinator had we not hired him...

I wonder if Sark will get bumped up to HC at SC or if they'll do the smart thing and bring Norm Chow in for a few years....

Hehehe...

Seems to me a lot of teams are doing some of the same things the Raiders have done and and Oakland got absolutely ripped for it. So I'm waiting for these teams, Dallas, SD and a couple of others to be called "a mess"...seems only right to me. :D

Dallas hires Wade Phillips? SD fires Marty after a 14-2 season. Heh.

Only the chargers could end up with the most loaded roster in the NFL and pull some shit like this.

This is why they aren't mentioned in the same rivalry breath with the broncos and chefs.

Born losers.

Looks like you just got your wish bro.............. Can't wait to turn on those annoying ass bandwagon Charger sports talk shows tomorrow morning. Nothing like listening to grown men cry on the radio.

Spanos said:
"In the plainest possible language, we have a dysfunctional situation here," Spanos said in his statement.

I bet its Pete Carroll when its all said and done...

Sarkisian gets cold feet, and decides to stay making it look like he knows that he will eventually get Pete Carrolls job;

Marty gets pissed off with AJ Smith and then gets canned after losing both his OC and DC;

We don't hear anything about Carroll until after the recruiting season is over and USc gets a bunch of its top recruits signed;

All signs point to him coming aboard, IMO.

YEAH!!!!!

You know, what I Think F MARTY AND F THE CHARGERS!!!!!!!!!!!

I doubt Carroll would accept the gig. Spanos is a notorious tight-ass, so I doubt he'll want to drop $4 -- $5 million/yr on a head coach that has never had success in the NFL. But the main reason Carroll wouldn't touch the gig? He'll have next to no say on personnel issues because of Smith's presence. Do you think Smith, after finally getting Marty out of town, is going to be willing to relinquish ANY control? Fat chance.

Don't be surprised if it's Mariucci. He and Spanos go way back and have always been buddy-buddy. And he'd be content leaving Smith to handle the personnel issues.

Another name? Out of leftfield... Ted Cottrell. Apparently Smith wanted to bring him in for DC after Phillips took the Cowpokes job but Marty wanted to talk to Vic Fangio instead. Cottrell has worked with Phillips in the past, so he knows the 3-4 defense very well.

Last name? Norv Turner. Worked in San Diego in '02 and still has a good relationship with Spanos.

At the end of the day I could see them going with Mariucci at HC and hiring Ted Cottrell as DC.

Speculation is when Carroll makes the jump back to the pros he wants Pat Kirwan has his personnel guy. With AJ Smith entrenched in San Diego I don't know if that would fly. I hope so cause I fear AJ more then anyone else in the NFL. That guy has been nailing draft picks the since 2004.
