This one is 100% on you Mark....
I’ve been in your corner and been the first to give you credit for things like closing Vegas and bringing Gruden back.... but your lack of leadership cost us not only our best player, but possibly a generational player who could have helped redefine this franchise.....
When you give somebody $100M to run the football side of a franchise, obviously you let him run the show while you offer perspective and support. I get that. We all get that. But you are still the owner. Gruden still reports to you. From time to time, you have to step in and take the steering wheel when needed. Isn’t that exactly what happened in New England last season? The same season that team and owner made another Super Bowl appearance? When this “negotiation” broke down, it was your obligation to act as an owner and grab the steering wheel.
Did Jon Gruden ever meet Mack? Did Gruden ever coach Mack? How much information did Gruden really have on Mack before he fired off the biggest trade this franchise has seen in decades? This is on you, Mark. As owner, you step in and tell Gruden he has to spend a season with Mack before shipping him out. See how Mack prepares, practices, communicates, leads, and most importantly how he plays in Gruden’s system. How do you allow the guy running your football operation to make a trade of this magnitude with such little information?
As owner, you step in and resurrect the negotiation. You call Mack and his agent and tell them you’ll bump up his 2018 figure several million to get him here on time for 1 more season, and then Gruden will make the decision to extend or trade after this season. Mack and his agent would likely have gone for that when it comes directly from the owner. That cap room could have easily been created.
You and Gruden just caught your first L. This one is on you because you’re still the guy at the top..... even if you refuse to act like it......
