Hiram Eugene has overtaken Stuart Schweigert as the Raiders' starting free safety.
It's not been a good year for Schweigert, who may not be back with Oakland next season. Eugene has only 12 tackles in the Raiders' last three games and won't be much of a shallow IDP league option playing center field.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports Oakland Raiders second-year FS Hiram Eugene isn't listed as the starting free safety, and no one will say he has replaced FS Stuart Schweigert, but it's starting to look that way. Eugene made his second straight start Sunday, and though his first came when Schweigert was hurt, this time it came with Schweigert healthy enough to play special teams. "Hiram's playing really well right now," HC Lane Kiffin said, when asked if Eugene is the new starter. "He's tackling well and doing things. We'll continue to give him a shot." Eugene also deflected the starter question. "Whether Stu gets to start this week, it's not a big deal to me," Eugene said.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports Oakland Raiders HC Lane Kiffin was impressed how rookie QB JaMarcus Russell handled adversity in his 16-play debut. Instead of making plays out of nothing, Russell protected the ball on a botched handoff exchange and fumbled snap - the latter of which Kiffin pinned on C Jeremy Newberry for being wide right. "We were really pleased with the way (Russell) protected the ball and his decision-making," Kiffin said. "There's some other times on some throws where he could have forced some things and tried to do too much, and he didn't."

The Contra Costa Times reports Oakland Raiders rookie FB Oren O'Neal received more playing time Sunday than starting FB Justin Griffith. HC Lane Kiffin said that owes to O'Neal developing into a punishing blocker. "We've given him a little bit more and a little bit more and every time we've given it he has taken to it and really done a great job," Kiffin said.
