Giants | Petitgout released
Mon, 12 Feb 2007 14:22:03 -0800

Michael Eisen, of Giants.com, reports the New York Giants have released OT Luke Petitgout.

Petitgout's a pretty good run blocker, iffy on the left side in pass pro... He's got a scary injury history but maybe would be a better fit as a RT at this point...

Mike Doss looks to be available as well:

John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the Indianapolis Colts will lose S Mike Doss this offseason.

I dont like Mike Doss at all. Looks for big hits more so than solid tackles and misses too much on plays being overaggressive in coverage.. Might be why he gets injured a bit.

Petitgout has been a solid tackle and aside from this season has been pretty injury free. I suspect he'll get some offers this offseason.

Wasn't it only a about 2 years ago that many Raider fans were clamouring for Lavar Arrington?

Lavar has Raider reclamation written all over him.

He does and I could see him challending Sam Williams for the SAM slot. Bing could back up Howard at WLB.

A LB'er crew consisting of any combination of Morrison, Howard, Aarington, Williams & Bing would give us the ability to flip flop 34 & 43 with ease.

This team really should draft a Day-1 DT/NG type bull to go along with Turdell Sands & Antajj Hawthorne. I still say the Tommy Kelly could play a DE in either scheme.

I think Lavar is bone on bone, he's finished as an explosive player.

I agree about Kelly at DE. The guy's good against the run and disrupts the backfield from that position. If we could just flip him with Burgess... what's it gonna take to get Derrick in his rightfull place... maybe some hypnosis?

I dont like Mike Doss at all.

I think he was badly misplaced playing as a cover 2 safety... Someone will grab him and use him in the box where he belongs and we'll see the OSU version of Doss IMO...

Unless I'm confusing him with some else (entirely possible), didn't he have a pretty serious back injury a few years back?... I could be confusing him with an OG from their team though...

I agree that Arrington may be pretty much done as an every down backer since he's somewhat limited laterally at this point, but I think he'd be an interesting guy to "Pat Swilling" and line up as a pass rushing DE because he's still very effective on blitzes.... Like IVlife said he could offer some versatility, though I think he should primarily play with his hand on the ground and stand up occasionally in zone blitz looks etc...

Why is everyone so quick to usher Sam Williams out the door? I thought he played well. Well enough, in fact, that I'd be pissed if we spent our free agent dollars looking to replace him. I mean, yes, the idea of an Arrington reclamation project is interesting but we have more than enough pressing needs to spend money on on the offensive side of the ball...

Sam Williams has looked good when he's been out there... but the guy has been injured so much, at what point does he become a liability by occupying a roster spot? If he can pass a physical and the team thinks he can stay healthy, then I have no problem with rolling the dice and giving him a shot... but I'd also welcome giving that roster spot to a healthier player if the medical staff concludes this guy is damaged goods.

The guy held up pretty well last year and he also played pretty well... why not give him the same benefit of the doubt that we gave Derrick Burgess, at a fraction of the cost?

Interesting idea.

He does look really big out there... in comparison to the other players he looks huge for a LB.

And I agree with TNS, Sam played pretty well last season, dude's just getting started, why throw him under the bus when he's finally playing healthy?

I'd pass on Arrington. The guy just doesn't have that explosive edge anymore and has never been a big proponent of playing within the scheme... something Ryan preaches over and over. He might be able to play some with his hand on the ground, but given the situation with his knee and now the blow achilles do you really think he's going to be able to get the outside shoulder of an NFL Left Tackle with any consistency? The best thing he could do for himself is go to Pittsburgh and rotate in as a 3-4 edge rusher.

I'd be interested in Petigout, but I imagine he'll still get his $5m/yr when all is said and done. I wouldn't mind trying him on the right side to see how he would hold up. I always thought of him as a serviceable, slightly above average LT with the potential to be a good to very good RT.

Woody is probably 340. Would make perfect sense to play him at center under last year's blocking scheme but not sure about this year.

I like Sam Wiliams. Wasn't neccesarily throwing him under the bus, but it's always important to add viable depth, particularly when I guy does have a history of injuries.

Even last year he missed a few games for various injuries - though they weren't nearly as serious as in the past.

Not saying cut Sam Williams, but I am saying I wouldn't mind getting another Strongside Backer to come in a start if neccesary (whether through injury or winning the job outright).

Interesting point about Aarington as a rush DE......

One word keeps Arrington from ever coming here EVER.

Didn't Sam start losing playing time to the guy from UCLA as the season went on? Could be that he ends up taking Sam's job when all is said and done.

Also, wasn't the whole fucking reason we stretched and drafted Sam Williams in the first place because Big Al made him put his hand on the ground and rush the QB (and he was "unblockable" in doing so?)

That's been a huge "WTF?" rolling around in the back of my head for a while now.
