Theres a few chief fans who are proclaiming Damion McIntosh as the 2nd coming... I'm cracking up at it more then anything but its just hilarious to me. Harris and Edwards are good signings for them as I think both would make good cover 2 LBs... not great mind you but thier coverage skills and athletic abilities make them good fits... however McIntosh has never been more then average and even a DE like brayton should give him fits... all the better for us.

anywhere where I'm going with this...

I know we havent been a force in FA but id take what we spend on Rhodes and Griffith and resigning big Terd over aquiring guys like Big Daddy Wilkinson, Damion McIntosh, etc. How do you compare our offseason to our AFC West opps?

All I know is there is one Glaring issue I have with the Chefs signings....

PLAYERS RE-SIGNED

--TE Tony Gonzalez: Potential UFA; 5 yrs, terms unknown.

--QB Damon Huard: Potential UFA; $7.5M/3 yrs, SB unknown.

PLAYERS ACQUIRED

--LS J.P. Darche: UFA Seahawks; 4 yrs, terms unknown.

--LB Donnie Edwards: UFA Chargers; 3 yrs, terms unknown.

--LB Napoleon Harris: UFA Vikings; $24M/6 yrs, $7.5M SB.

--OT Damion McIntosh: UFA Dolphins; 6 yrs, terms unknown.

San Diego's stood pat so far, which is smart considering they won 14 games last season. Don't rock the boat there. They will have some major extensions to write in the next 2 yrs (Merriman, Castillo, Rivers, Jackson) so that's where they should be focusing.

K.C. I'm not too impressed with. Their coaching staff underwhelms me and they really haven't added anything to their 2 glaring weaknesses (the passing offense and the interior D-line). Signing Harris and Edwards is fine and does represent an upgrade to the LB position, but they still don't have a DT to speak of on that roster and now Jared Allen wants out. Their safeties don't make me lose any sleep either. I'm uninspired by Huard at QB and they are very old on the offensive line. McIntosh should be viewed as nothing more than a spot starter at LT for a drafted player. They need to look hard at WR and OT in the draft. Levi Brown in K.C. wouldn't make me happy.

Denver's made the biggest splash in the AFC West and probably upgraded the most as well. The one signing that scares me to death is Travis Henry. He's perfect for that one-cut system. Add D. Graham as a blocking TE and they now have an offense that is very diversified and takes a lot of pressure off of Cutler. They are very balanced and very scary on offense. On defense they haven't done much to impress me. It was a nice move to get Bly but pass defense wasn't Denver's problem last year (at least at the CB position), the pass rush was. It appears as though Gerrard Warren isn't coming back and Wilkinson can be viewed as nothing more than a rotational player at this point in his career. They don't have a DE on that team that instills fear in me. And they are still wretched at safety when it comes to the deep middle. I don't think there is a DE that will be around for them that would scare me, but if they walked out of the first with either LaRon Landry or Reggie Nelson I'll be worried.

Natty,

I totally agree on what you laid out for the AFC West teams....I would just add for Denver that I still think they lack at the Wideout spot as well. Javon was a nice pickup for them but old Roddy is done and I view Javon as more of a homerun threat. If Brandon Marshall or Kircus pick it up like Shanny has stated they can then they would be scary. I think they grabbed Quincy Morgan too but he's dirt as well. What would really scare the shit out of me is if Shanny moved to get CJ or Ginn Jr. in the draft.

Isn't Ginn a homerun threat as well? Kinda like Jett and Whitted are supposed to be? Fast as hell, but doesn't do much with routes?

How do you compare our offseason to our AFC West opps?

Up to this point, I'd say it's tied for worst with San Diego...

Chiefs... Bringing back Gonzales, putting Green on the trading block, and signing both Edwards and Harris makes their offseason extremely impressive.

Broncos... I really thought this team was just a RB away from putting it all together. Henry is going to give that team a huge boost. That signing alone makes their offseason impressive.

Chargers... when you're a 14 win team, you should get a pass... that is unless you lead pipe you're entire coaching staff and name Norv Turner as your new head coach. I think the only thing that kept the offseason from turning into a complete debacle for them is that they signed some damn good coordinators to succeed Norv.

Raiders... as it stands right now, the Raiders don't have an NFL caliber starting QB, the Raiders don't have an NFL caliber starting RB, and the OLine is extremely suspect... but at least we're 8 deep at WR and about to spend the #1 pick on a player who will have no impact on the team in the near future. I'd rather watch piss dry before watching this offense lay another egg.

I consider locking up Terdell Sands and Robert Thomas long term, bringing in the most talented young FB in the league, adding much needed depth at RB, picking up a Pro Bowl caliber center and getting rid of the worst coaching staff in the NFL a resounding success...

I havent been this optimistic in about 3-4 years.

I'd rank the AFC west off seasons as follows:

1) Broncos BY FAR
2) Raiders
3) Chiefs (Napo is overrated...48 tackles as an MLB? C'mon behind 2 Pro bowl DT's, no less.)
4) Chargers BY FAR

I agree with all of the above.

As poor as Art Shell was, Lane Kiffin, at this point, is a HUGE question mark.
Let's be straight about that.

We need more help at O-line, QB, TE, and possibly receiver.
For 2 straight seasons we jocked our receiving corp during the off-season, touting them as being among the best in the league.
And for 2 straight seasons they've flat out SUCKED DICK.

We could also stand to beef up the middle of the D-line, and add another speed rusher.

Our draft is critical, and we're poised to really make out well, IMO.

But overall, I can't see how one can be overly critical of what Oakland has done so far this off-season.

I'll rate how I think the 4 teams have done in FA based on what I felt they NEEDED to do.

A+ Broncos. They are now a legitimate SB threat. They will scare the shit out of every team who sees their name on the schedule. Everyone knows that Graham and Henry are huge additions. But Bly is one of the most underrated CBs in the league IMO. Ramsey adds a solid comfort level at the QB position.

However, I also agree they have a substantial hole at WR. Unfortunately they will draft guy like Dwayne Bowe and that hole will go away overnight. I'm calling it, they're the new AFCW champs.

B+ Chargers. As Natty said, when you win 14 games it's sometimes more dangerous to fuck with your team than it is to leave it alone. Losing Edwards hurts, but they retained Dielman and they'll add a legit WR in the draft. Their main offseason goal should be to make sure Rivers improves as much as humanly possible.

B Chiefs. The addition of Edwards is huge IMO. They overpaid for Napo but he's still an improvement for them. Mcintosh is no savior but he's an upgrade ast the position. Handing the keys to Huard was their biggest move yet, and should pay dividends as I think Green's PTSD is too much to overcome. All in all, this was a playoff team that improved itself.

C- Raiders. Re-signing Thomas, Kelly and Sands were the best moves we've made, and that was all on defense. Landing Griffith was solid. That's it. IMO Rhodes does not improve this team, and anyone who's counting on Newberry to prop us up is doomed to disappointment. I'm not even going to talk about the TEs, because they're the punchline of a joke and not worthy of legitimate discussion.

Coming off a 2-14 season we have failed miserably to address critical holes via FA or trade. You can only do so much through the draft, even witht the #1 overal pick. We have gaping holes at QB, RB, TE and OL. If we trade Moss the WR position will need an injection. All in all we're relying FAR too much on our new coaching staff to turn the ship around. A 2-14 team should be making impact moves.

The Chargers lost their six top coaches, and now have Norv Turner at the helm...That aint a B+ hombre.

Nor is speculation that they'll add a legit WR in the draft.

If making impact moves means overspending for the likes of Leonard Davis, Wes Welker, Dan Graham, then count me out. As I mentioned in another thread, this was one of the weakest FA classes in a long time. If we're one or two players away from a SB then I can maybe see the logic in going for broke, but we're not and it's going to take two years to right this ship. Let's see how the offseason completely unfolds before we jump to conclusions. We should be able to add a starter or two from the draft.

FWIW, Travis Henry is a good addition for the Donks but he's not LJ or LT. Also Dre Bly wants out.

he doesnt have to be LJ to put up his numbers or better in that offense. Clinton Portis couldnt hold Larry Johnson's candle either, but sure did look like it with all those OL guys rolling like bowling balls to get him free.

That's exactly my point, you can put any swinging dick back there and they'll rush for 1200 + yards. Portis has put up consistent numbers everywhere he has played. I wouldn't have minded seeing him in S & B this season.

I disagree about our rivals. Im not sold anyone of them is a real SB threat.

Denver is the best team today but not going to go all the way IMO. They will be the #1 team in cap hell soon. If they dont win the superbowl in two years this team is gonna be hurting. Shanny hasnt won a playoff game since Elways was there. Cutler is overated and has never played a playoff game, let alone a full season. Graham is WAY overrated. Henry is one bong hit away from a year suspension. Rod Smith is older than Tim Brown, and their D-Line and safety's still blow. Lynch is 100 years old and Ramsey is terrible. Im not scared of these sorry ass Bronco's, they barely put US away last year and didnt even make the playoffs. They are better than us, but the Patriots, Chargers, Ravens, Bengals(will bounce back strong), Colts and Jag's are all just as good IMO.

The Chargers lost all of their coaches and brought in Norv. Ill stop there.

The Chiefs have Herm Edwards and Damon Huard...

The AFC west is a great division, but I personally dont see a 08 superbowl champion.

Nor is speculation that they'll add a legit WR in the draft.
To be completely fair, Rupe, everyone is a legitimate addition at this time of year. Once upon a time, the Raiders added a "legitimate" tight end by drafting Rickey Dudley.

I'm just sayin'...

Henry is far better than your average swinging dick. He'll put up 1600 yds for them.

If you want to crown them, then go ahead and crown their asses.

Personally as far as I'm concerned we shouldn't even be talking about skill positions until we fix this abortion of an Oline. The only free agent I really wanted was Steinbach because he can play every position on the line. Pretty weak FA class overall IMO.
