something ive been pondering.

as of now we've got exactly 3-5 proven NFL high end guys (Burgess, Asomugha, Morrison, Sapp, and you can pick from a group of washington, sands, schweig, huff)

On O we are a mess... but an intriguing one with talent that hasnt pulled together...

i compare our team to one like indys and weve got similar talent but on the other side of the ball. if we can develop a guy like jamarcus and progress our O along with him... how far are we?

Basically what I'm asking is can we rely on our D ala the 2000 Ravens, 2002 Bucs and go with a "safe" offense to win games.

Or are we more then a few steps from having that good of a D and we need to get our O up about 20 ranks rather then 5-10.

I don't think we have lost that much talent (that we havent amply replaced) since our SB year. Its just been misused and put into poor schemes (Collins under turner put up numbers but made bad decisions, last years O Scheme was simple enough I could run it in Highschool, etc etc).

I think we need to get JR some exp next season later in the year. Then if we draft very well and land a few key free agents, we should have as good a chance as any team in the AFC west. I think Kiffins and JR's first year will be tough but will set the foundation for a superbowl run in year 2-3. With very good defense in place turning around the offense next season is huge. We dont wanna waste this good defense so Kiffin is going ot have to snap these guys into a point scoring machine!

If I knew 2 important factors, this question would be much easier to answer:

1.) Offensive Line - Is this going to be the same group of soft, slow, stiffs that we've witnessed the past 4 years (you cannot put this all on Art Shell Raider Nation, even though it's highly convenient). At this point, the jury is completely out.

2.) JaMarcuss Russell - Obviously a degree of his success will be based on question #1 above, but how will he progress, read & react as an NFL QB?

I think this would be a great question to pose at the end of the year, but now? Way to soon I'm afraid.

A long ways away.

Peer up and down the Chargers, Colts, Ravens and Pats roster. Even check the Steelers and Saints...Those are deep teams with good players at most key positions, and solid O lines. Stable coaching staffs on most, too.

We have unknown QB and OL situations and a young coach in his first year.

However, I see us having a top ten D, and an improved O this year. By 2008 we will be an AFCW front runner, with talent at QB, WR, RB and TE to go with a top tier defence.

We are 2 years away, IMO.

Drafting Russell officially confirmed our rebuilding status (which is why we should have made a stronger play for Schaub or Carr and drafted CJ). I can only hope we'll make the playoffs in 2009.

We'll sit Russell behind McCown this season. By the end of 2009 Russell will have only 2 years remaining on his rookie contract and we will just be figuring out if he's the truth. Simplistically speaking that's $36M of his est. $60M contract out the window by the time he's a legit QB - maybe.

I don't like the sound of that at all. I don't like rebuilding at all.

All I ever care about is making the playoffs RIGHT NOW because anyone who does that has an actual shot to take it all. To get there you have to win at least 10 games, more likely 11 or 12. With our defense, with our new coaching staff, and had we signed a (legitimate) vet QB, drafted CJ and Zach, we would have had a good shot to pull a Saints this season IMEO.

As it is, we should start Russell from day 1. Let him go out there and maybe he produces for us by the end of the season. The fact that he can take a hit, has a quick release and can gun it into relatively tight spaces bodes well for his chances to be a rookie "sucess." Kif can dumb down the offense a bit and slowly expand it as the season progresses.

Then we have a shot at being dangerous in 2008.

My big concern for this team is keeping the D together long enough for the O to get decent. We're going to have to write some pretty big checks for our young budding stars. Aso and Burgess are obviously the first. Morrison, and Kelly will be coming soon. Sapp isn't going to play like an all pro forever. We really need to have the offense take some steps forward quickly.

Having said all that, everyone thought the Chargers were a mess until suddenly they weren't anymore. Who would have predicted the Saints last season? We have plenty of talent. So who knows? I do know I really like what I see from Kiffen and Co so far. If it translates on the field, we might be there quicker than any of us could foresee.

Super Bowl? I'd like to simply make the playoffs first. I'd say 4 years before Super Bowl contention. And that's if JaMarcus pans out. If he doesn't? Another 7 years plus...

Playoffs? Should be contending in 2 years.

2 seasons Kiffin's praise stands as high as people have been giving him in the draft and FA.

Yea I said 2 seasons. And for the record if we dont catch that fire in two seasons, the defense may rotate into a new DC with uncertain future ahead of it.

I think we can push for the playoffs in 2008.

In my Best Coach Mora impersonation "PLAYOFFS!"

RN has it right lets worry about the playoffs being claiming we are SB ready....

Our offense would have had us in last place in the WAC last year so I'm thinking getting some TD's and stringing some victories together against AFCWest teams is a realistic goal this season....

I look for a Gruden like ascension the first couple of years where we're in every game and win some we're not supposed to and lose some at the end of games due to coaching/player inexperience... I for one am glad we seem to be showing some long term vision as far as building our roster...

I think we will be competitive this year especially if our defense picks up where we left off last year. We've got a nucleus of nice young talent with the exception of Sapp and a couple other players. It's really going to boil down to how quickly this OL can gel together under Cable's new scheme and if we can get some steady play out of the QB position. I think we have some decent weapons on the offensive side of the ball. Don't see why we can't start contending next season. I think we will surprise some people this season.

I do not see us making the playoffs for 2 more years.

SD and Denver are both solid squads that should not fade like KC.

Our D is solld but our O was an abortion done by a blind doc on lots of drugs. I personally do not see our O being that much better this year. Our best QB for this season is playing on his 3rd team in 3 years. Our best RB option is either a drunk or recovering knee victim. Our best WR took a year off for attitude issues. Our OL was the worst OLine ever.....and we bolstered it with a knee held together by7 duct tape. Our O is going to suck again this year. Seriously, we will stink.

I see us winning 4 or 5 at best next year and hopefully hitting .500 next season. After that, we will see. it all depends on how we did with this draft.

Dont forget we added 2 starters out of 5 on the o-line. Cooper Carlisle started in a ZBS for the last 2 years in Denver. If Newberry is healthy he is one of the better centers in the NFL. Not to mention instead of having great lineman coaching the O-line, now we have great coaches doing it. That + the ZBS should make our line look way better IMO. Plus we have a real offense that wont be making 7 step drops all day. We also have reliable check down targets in J.Griffith and Z.MIller. I expect ther offense to turn it around. No playoffs next year, but after that the J-Rock era officially begins with a revamped offense/franchise and a young defense in its prime.
