The Press Democrat reports 49ers QB Trent Dilfer, who has done some work for the NFL Network in the past, will be in the broadcast booth for the network during the Senior Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 26. There has been no decision on whether Dilfer, who turns 36 in March, will be back with the 49ers next season. QB Alex Smith and QB Shaun Hill are expected to compete for the starting job. Dilfer is scheduled to make $1.5 million from the 49ers this season, which is not the kind of money No. 3 QBs generally make. Meanwhile, LB Derek Smith has a scheduled base salary of $3.28 million. Smith's role evolved late in the season to a point where he was on the field only on first downs against base offensive packages. OG Larry Allen is a scheduled free agent. His retirement has been expected since his late arrival at training camp last summer.

I would be cool with Dilfer backing up JR. That is if McCown moves on.
Derek would be a nice addtion to the LB corp. maybe not a starter?
Also if Larry Allen wanted to hang on another year to play mentor and back up to Cooper and Gallery.
 
Trent did wonders for Alex.....:pound: Just bustin your balls. No thanks....I think Derek could be a ST teams guy...thought he had some cornea issue and was having problems seeing, focusing etc?

As a backup I would rather go after a Mark Brunell, Jamie Martin or Quinn Gray...Brunell has the wisdom/smarts, has a little gas in the tank...Martin and Quinn have has some solid fill in outings....Personally I wouldn't mind having McCown backing up JaMarcus because he would be willing to help the dude. McCown doesn't have the intangibles of course, but he's supposed to be smart, we know he's gritty and could pass on those things. Trent is gritty, but dumb as a rock when it comes to reading a defense, and has basically sucked his entire career.

i honestly hope we bring McCown back

he knows the offense, fits what kiff's offens needs, is a good sideline/locker room guy

much rather send McCown in the game than Dilfer or Walter

I still remember McCown starting with a broken finger when JR wasn't ready to play. Alot of players in this league would have been in street clothes but he sacked up and took one for the team.

Yes he makes mistakes and is not as talented as I would like BUT his attitude and frame of mind is infectious and is EXACTLY what a 4-12 team needs.

Billy Joe Holbert
Vince Evans

You could plunk McCown right into that list and he would be an upgrade over just about everyone of them outside of Vince Evans...I would say Tui, but we never got to see the guy play more than two quarters.

I can guarantee if he wants to resign, he'll be with the team.

Besides isn't a statue-like, tackling dummy type, QB?

Yea I forgot how much it helped the Cardinals and Lions out of their losing ways. :confused:

Knowing the offense makes him a keeper no matter how untalented he is? To each his own there. I'd rather wait til we see who else comes free before we sign the Raider fans Rudy.

i gives no damn about the qb's legs at this point. We had our share of dummies with legs. I just want some legit brain power and experience next to Russell. McCown doesnt bring any major winning successful experience of use, and c-pepp is too slow to pass off anything useful. As a backup and a mentor i think Dilfer is an upgrade.
 
I agree that he'd be a good mentor, but I really couldn't/wouldn't say that he's any better in that department than McCown... who seems to be as good as anyone in that capacity.

As far as smarts, the only time he did anything was with a historic D, an awsome running game and a HOF TE.

I saw him play in Seattle and looked like a douchebag... he's not really a smart playing QB. Like MCown, I don't really see anything great about him other than he's a good guy.

I just don't see how he's worth going out of our way for :confused:

You're under the impression that i said Dilfer was great or even a starter. Neither him or McCown is a starter in this league. And imo Dilfer has won and competed in big games far more than McCown ever will. Thats the difference of experience I'm talking. I mean for all his gung ho injury playing(most of it because he knew he may not see the field again if somebody worth a damn came in), he's not a winner and most of his decisions suck balls. More than Dilfer's garbage to me. I'd hope neither guy should ever see the field. I just rather have Dilfer as a back up. Honestly i'd take Brooks over McCown in that spot. I just dont like him being around our young qb's, especially when he's trusted by Kiffin when 9 times out of 10 he shouldnt.. One other thing, Dilfer depended on his running game and great defense rather than forcing wobbly lame passes. He also used his hall of fame TE well. Is that a negative thing? You mean if McCown did that we wouldnt win a few more games?

After saying all this, its not a big deal to me, its just my opinion on the matter. I honestly think our running game and Russell's first season as a starter hopefully is a way bigger deal.
