Gonzalez seeks long run
Pro Bowl tight end wants contract extension; agent shows up in camp.

RIVER FALLS, Wis. | - With first-round draft pick Matt Leinart yet to be signed in Arizona, agent Tom Condon made a trip to Chiefs training camp on Tuesday afternoon and planned to dine at the Copper Kettle with another big client, Tony Gonzalez.

Condon didn’t come for the cheese curds.

Kansas City president/general manager Carl Peterson and Condon were spotted chatting after the afternoon workout. Though it’s common for agents to visit clients at camp, Peterson has said for months that the club is working on a contract extension for Gonzalez, a seven-time Pro Bowl tight end.

Asked if Condon was in town to talk about an extension, Gonzalez said, “Oh, I don’t know. He’s my agent. He’s a good agent. He’s come to say hello. Obviously he’s not working with Matt Leinart, so he’s down here hanging out with us and Kyle Turley.

“So we’re all going to go to dinner, and if he and Carl have a chance to sit down, I’m sure they will. But if they don’t, they’ll do it back in Kansas City. Sooner or later, it’ll get done.”

Gonzalez has two years left on his contract, but the last year is voidable because of his Pro Bowl appearances. He’s entering his 10th year in Kansas City and has said he wants to finish his career as a Chief.

He’d like to have a new deal before the season starts.

“Are you kidding me? Of course I want to get it over with,” Gonzalez said. “Look around the league, you see guys who have extended … and actually, that doesn’t concern me too much. I don’t care what they’re doing. All I can worry about is what I’m doing.

“Yeah, I want to get this thing done. That way it can give me a little bit more of a peace of mind. But at the same time, we’ve got to go and make sure it’s right. I don’t want to rush anything.”

Turley is also a Condon client. Under normal circumstances, they’d dine at the Capital Grille on the Plaza. On Tuesday night, they’d go for a lower-brow locale.

“Have you tasted those cheese curds over there?” Gonzalez said. “Unbelievable.”
