Give ’em a hand
Forget contract issues. Gonzalez, Kennison are all business on the field, each surpassing 100 yards receiving.

He’s back, he’s piling up 100-yard games again, and Tony Gonzalez was easing in late Sunday when somebody cracked a joke that he must have the same agent as Damon Huard.
Huard keeps throwing the ball to Gonzalez, who’s in a contract year. And Gonzalez, the Chiefs’ seven-time Pro Bowl tight end, keeps playing as if he’s on the verge of a big payday. But Gonzalez got serious Sunday when the contract extension was brought up and conceded that negotiations are “not even close” to being finished.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about it,” Gonzalez said. “But if it can’t get done, it can’t get done.

“Tony Richardson and Donnie Edwards are good examples of people who didn’t want to leave, but it didn’t work out. It’s a business thing.”

Gonzalez, whose contract will void at the end of the season, has made it clear he wants to stay in Kansas City. He said Sunday that the negotiations haven’t been contentious and that he hopes he’ll get a deal worked out soon.

Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said it’s obvious Gonzalez is running with more of a purpose in the last few weeks. He’s dragged tacklers and come up with clutch catches in Kansas City’s wins over San Diego and Seattle.

On Sunday, Gonzalez caught six passes for 116 yards and came up with a 37-yard snag. It was a big day for offensive players seeking new contracts. Veteran receiver Eddie Kennison hauled down a huge 51-yard catch on the game-winning drive. Kennison was hoping for a bigger payday when he showed up for training camp.

He had six catches for 132 yards on Sunday and has temporarily quieted the fans who were clamoring for the Chiefs to sign a marquee receiver in the offseason.

“I don’t have to show people anything,” Kennison said. “I have to prove to this football team that I’m a worthy receiver. And that’s all that matters to the guys in this locker room. They love having me around, and I love being around them.”

Huard, who has been filling in for injured Trent Green since the season opener, said Kennison and Gonzalez have made his job considerably easier. Gonzalez tells Huard to lob the ball high and he’ll catch it like a basketball player. Kennison just keeps coming up with clutch plays.

“That (Kennison) catch was just unbelievable,” Huard said. “They are great playmakers. You’ve just got to put the ball in their direction, and they make plays for you.”
