General UFC

I generally agree, though I do think the fighters should have some voice…. But this “build my name by beating 30 nobodies” shit is old.

I think MMA has just taken over the interest of most young people interested in combat sports. Fewer people, specially talented people, are pursuing boxing at this point. It's noticeable in the expanding number of countries MMA fighters are coming from and the more obscure countries we're starting to see boxers starting to become competitive. It gives an avenue for youth wrestling, which is huge too.

Free fight card on ESPN. Prelims starting now. Kattar/Emmett should be good as the headliner. Sucks that Cerrone/Lauzon got cancelled. Means/Holland could be interesting, too.

First fight was a first round KO. Beautiful knee to the face from the clinch, up against the cage. And, Jesus, did he land it! On the replay, Dom Cruz says “You can hear it. It sounds like hitting a melon with a hammer.” And it did.

Second fight was a second round TKO. Hawes looked great but I’m shocked at how easy he made it look. Winn was 7-2 coming into this fight… but he was on the wrong side of a brutal one-sided beat down. Good job by Herb Dean in stopping that one when he did.

Third fight Cody Stamman just blazed through Wineland. I think I was more surprised to discover that Wineland is still fighting than I was by Stamman’s overwhelming win. Another first round KO. These guys aren’t trying to win decisions today!

Oliveira versus De Paula was a fun fight. First one not to end in a finish. That Oliveira lady is all action and volume. I think she threw 5 flying knees. In the end, she won a split decision but it really could have gone either way. Oliveira was the reason it was so fun to watch, though. Not just the volume but also the screaming at De Paula to stand and fight, reminiscent of aDiaz brother or Max Holloway.

And we have another first round finish! Nasty spinning elbow just shut Chavez’ lights off. I don’t know how the hell they’re going to decide who gets a bonus tonight.

And that was just the prelims!

And then Jeremiah Wells also ends it in round one with “a left hook from hell” that sent Court McGee into the shadow realm!

Woman fighter making her UFC debut, Natalia Silva, just absolutely outclassed her opponent. The UFC veteran fighter looked like she didn’t even belong in the cage with Silva and got pieced up. Silva wins unanimous decision, including one 10-8 round.

The whole card ended up being so awesome that the UFC gave out Fight of the Night to Kattar/Emmons and also gave 50k bonuses to every fighter on the card that scored a finish. This card tied the UFC record for most knockouts in one event.

Stephan Bonnar dead. One of the OG's of the sport.

Ah, hell. They're already trying to take Bones off his game. Fuckers.

Well that was anticlimactic.

Jon Jones says he got some great advice just before his fight: "Neurologically, a cow and a lion feel the same in a fight with the same adrenaline rushing to their brains. The only difference is only the lion wants to be there."

That’s pretty damn great.
