A day of furious free agent movement and negotiations left the Raiders and veteran quarterback Jeff Garcia at an impasse following several hours of talks.

Garcia, who became an unrestricted free agent Thursday night, was considered the Raiders' top target on the open market. But an interesting series of events - and several hours of discussion between the Raiders and Garcia's agent, Steve Baker - left both sides with nothing.

"He's going to keep exploring his options and the Raiders will, too,'' an NFL source said Friday afternoon.

By all appearances, Garcia may be angling to secure a deal with other teams and the Raiders - who are about $9 million under the $109 million salary cap - are trying to be smart with their money.

Earlier Friday, the Denver Broncos appeared to have completed a deal to send backup quarterback Jake Plummer to Tampa Bay in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick.

But Plummer - who had hinted he was through with football after losing his starting job last season to rookie Jay Cutler - derailed that trade by telling both teams he would retire rather than play for the Buccaneers.

Some NFL insiders believed Plummer was angling for Denver to work a trade deal with the Houston Texans, who are looking for a replacement for quarterback David Carr. But Plummer's retirement announcement remained, and suddenly the Broncos were looking for a backup for Cutler.

A number of teams, including the Buccaneers, the Vikings and the Texans, reportedly have strong interest in Garcia, 37, who is the top quarterback in an otherwise mediocre crop of free agents.

Garcia is coming off a terrific season in Philadelphia, where he took over for injured starter Donovan McNabb. With the scrambling Garcia under center and running back Brian Westbrook churning out 1,916 total yards and scoring 11 touchdowns (seven rushing, four receiving), the Eagles made it the second round of the playoffs. Garcia became a cult hero in Philadelphia.

But the Eagles, perhaps eager to stifle rumors that Garcia had eclipsed McNabb as their franchise quarterback, signed backup quarterback A.J. Feeley to a three-year contract extension. Garcia had been playing under a one-year contract in Philadelphia.

The Raiders have the No. 1 overall pick in April's NFL Draft and they are expected to select a quarterback, probably LSU's JaMarcus Russell, with that choice. It's believed that Garcia's hesitance to sign with the Raiders stems from the fact his tenure as a starter in Oakland would be short-lived because of the Raiders' draft plans.

Eh, anytime I read something from across the bay I take it with a grain of salt.. That paper has been taking shots at Oakland for 30 years. Nothing ever is positive about Oakland from that bird cage paper.

Greg Knapp is a guy Garcia likes, he's from the bay area, said he'd love to come back home, and being a former 49'er.. I wouldnt expect anything less from that scab paper.

Bucs first choice was Plummer.. I doubt Garcia goes there.. Denver may drop the bank.. But Cutler's their guy. Jeffs best shot at playing is in Oakland

And ya know... Giving him the opportunity to again play for his former OC in Knapp and the Raiders drafting CJ??

C'mon man... Moss/Johnson/Porter?.. who wouldnt want that gig?

This is the perfect place for a FA QB to come.. IMO

First off, I really don't think signing Garcia would convince Kiffen and Davis they should not select Russell or Quinn. Would Garcia start the year as the #1 QB? Absolutely. But he hasn't played in more than 10 games in a single season in 4 years.

Aside from the fact he would bring much needed mobility and leadership to the QB position, I see no good reason to sign Garcia. His arm isn't a great fit for this offense, he's always taken too many big hits, and behind this line he'll get killed.

If it was Garcia for 2 yrs. at $3m/yr plus a $4m bonus, I'd do the deal. But with Dockery getting $49 million, Clements getting $80 million , and guys like Mughelie getting $18 you know Garcia is dealing from a position of strength as the #1 QB on the market. Frankly, I'm ecstatic to read the Raiders are trying to be responsible with their money. Because FA has killed this team since 1994 with the exception of Rich Gannon and Rod Woodson. They need to focus all of their energies on the draft and the 2nd and 3rd tier Free Agents, much like the Patriots have done for the last 6 years (as much as it pains me to say it).

Does anybody think this makes David Carr more of a Raider possible?? With Jack the Snake trying to force his way to Houston.... There was gossip out there that the Raiders had talked to Carr's agent?

I'd like to see the Raiders build more through the draft too...

... but I'm not sure I'd write off what this team has done in free agency as some sort of disaster... This org made it to the Super Bowl in '02 on a roster filled with free agents. Guys like Romo, Rice, Kennedy, Garner etc. were no less important than Woodson and Gannon.

I don't think we've done nearly as well in FA lately... Part of it has to do with the challenge of being a 3rd tier toilet organization... but the FA market isn't what it used to be either. Teams are doing a better job of managing the cap and keeping their top dogs...

Sure does... We trade for Carr and you can pretty much ascertain (Ghosttothepostbigword :p ) that Al hearts Calvin Johnson... The only reason I'm hoping we sign Garcia is that it points to drafting a QB at 1 IMO...

Personally, I don't think the Garcia deal is quite dead... I think he left because the sexual tension Natty was giving out was giving him the hot flashes...

Yeah, I don't think you can say that the only good free agents that we've signed since '94 are Gannon and Rod Woodson. Several others immediately spring to mind that were great to very good for us...

- Charlie Garner
- Tory James
- Sam Adams (for a year)
- William Thomas
- Bill Romanowski
- John Parella
- Frank Middleton
- Andre Rison
- Jerry Rice
- Zack Crockett
- Tyrone Wheatley
- Aaron Broo...

Okay, maybe I need to put this kool-aid down for a minute. Still, we've done pretty well in free agency, all things considered.

Oh, and as for Garcia, I'm pretty unmoved. Garcia is, to me, the best of a bad bunch of free agent quarterbacks. While I've no doubt that he'd be an improvement (particularly in the Gruden-esque offense that Kiffin is said to be installing), the guy isn't "the answer."

Personally, my "best case" scenario as far as bringing in somebody else's quarterback would include either Carr or Leftwich... and both of those guys have question marks too.

So if Garcia signs with Houston who exactly would trade for David Carr? Nobody was coming out of the woodwork to fork over a 3rd or 4th rounder for him. I'm wondering if he just might wind up getting cut.

No doubt... My thing is say we draft either JR or Quinn, Andrew would be the two... who would be the vet that we could sign because neither the rook or AW are slam dunks as far as being ready...

I'm thinking Garcia most likely ends up in Tampa as their starter since Gruden is in essence fighting for his rep as an offensive coach and he would probably give immediate production... That probaly leaves us staring at some big armed immobile stiff like Bledsoe...

I'm not saying Oakland's Free Agency experience hasn't had it successes and maybe I understated those successes by only referring to Gannon and Woodson. Garner, Thomas, Rice, and Wheatley (for a year and a half) were good pickups. Romo? He played 1 season... I don't qualify that as a success. Parella was a flat-out bust. Rison gave the Raiders a 1/2 of a good year. Then there is Larry Brown and Desmond Howard. Pat Swilling is another guy I'd almost put in the FA success category.

The point I'm trying to make is, outside of Gannon, IMO Oakland has never struck it rich in free agency and has spent the better part of the last 12 years trying to build through free agency instead of the draft. Of those 12 years, only 3 were worth a shit.

The Raiders finally are a young team through very strong drafts the last 3 years. Now's not the time to go throwing around $50 million to guys that have never sniffed the Pro Bowl... that's all I'm trying to say.

I'm with you Step as regards Garcia (here - not here, don't care) and I also agree that Carr may be the best pick-up. He is strong, mobile and young, If he can learn from his experience he may become more than adequate.

See I don't understand the Garcia to Tampa logic. They just signed Simms to an extension and have a decent back up in Rattay. Simms did get them to the playoffs the prior year and I think he's got a helluva lot more upside than Garcia. Man he must have really pissed Chucky off at some point.

That's probably because there isn't any logic to that. Gruden's a heck of a coach... but an awful GM. No wonder a retread like Plummer wanted no part of that QB circus.

Is that Garcia in your avatar SoCal?

:D

Garcia a Raider? Not likely

Posted by Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer on March 2nd, 2007

Free agency began with Jeff Garcia looking like the starting quarterback for the 2007 Oakland Raiders.

Nearly 24 hours later, Garcia left Alameda without a contract, and was said to be considering his options.

Translation _ he's not coming to Oakland.

Garcia can either open the season as the starter with the Raiders or finish the season as the starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
There are strong indications Garcia will choose the latter.

If the Raiders draft JaMarcus Russell with the No. 1 pick in the draft, the only way Garcia lasts past midseason is if the Raiders are at .500 or above. Once it becomes clear the Raiders have no shot at the postseason, or if they simply struggle to grasp a new offensive system, the momentum to start Russell will be overwhelming.

Garcia can ask the Raiders if they plan to draft Russell, but he shouldn't expect an answer. The Raiders should operate in the best interest of the Raiders, not Jeff Garcia. If that means they've determined Russell is No. 1, too bad. If it means they trade the pick and move down after Garcia decided to move elsewhere, then perhaps Garcia made a mistake.

Another possible problem with the Raiders is the presence of Randy Moss. Moss is a jump-and-catch receiver whose skills don't mesh with Garcia, who is predominatly a ball-control passer.

Garcia has experience with a pain-in-the-rear receiver. Guy by the name of Owens. And while Moss is an entirely different kind of problem, his indifference should he lose confidence in Garcia would be a problem.

The Bucs?

Yes, they retained the services of Chris Simms. But the $5 million they paid him to stick around is not by any stretch of the imagination a season-long mandate.
They started the day thinking they had traded for Denver quarterback Jake Plummer, only to be told Plummer would retire instead.

Other than his first year in Tampa, when veteran Brad Johnson delivered an efficient, error-free season which played to a dominating defense, it seems Jon Gruden has not been truly happy with a quarterback since he had his kindred spirit Rich Gannon.

He won't be happy with Garcia, either, if the Bucs struggle. But Garcia has been at his best most often as an off-the-bench sparkplug (backup to Steve Young, backup to Donovan McNabb) than as the anointed starter.

As for offensive systems, Gruden would no doubt be Garcia-friendly. As for Kiffin, it's impossible to know. It's worth noting Steve Baker, Garcia's agent, said the quarterback was impressed with Kiffin.

"He really felt a connection with Lane Kiffin, he liked the organization and what they are trying to accomplish," Baker said.

Baker also told the Tampa Bay Tribune Garcia has always wanted to play for Gruden, so coach vs. coach would appear to be a push.

Dark horses remain. Houston is said to be interested, as well as Denver. But both would probably be backup roles. The Texans show no signs of being the type of team Garcia would agree to be No. 2, and in Denver, the only way he plays is if Jay Cutler is hurt.

Take it for what it's worth, but the feeling here is Garcia isn't coming to Oakland.

Other free agency notes as they pertain to the Raiders:

– When Nate Clements got a reported $22 million in guaranteed money in an eight-year contract worth up to $80 million, it meant the price to sign Nnamdi Asomugha before his void year just went up.
Substantially.

– I'm having a hard time believing this as I type it, and maybe I'll be wrong when the actual figures come out. But I've been told Langston Walker got a $10 million signing bonus to sign with Buffalo.

You think Clements' numbers were out of line? Walker's deal, considering his level of play, is one of the most astonishing contracts I've ever heard of. Either they don't have film in Buffalo, or every other lineman on the Raiders was horrible and Walker was simply struggling to take up the slack.

– New England tight end Daniel Graham reportedly has Oakland on his list of free agent stops. By the way, Courtney Anderson, who split the starting role with Randal Williams last season, hit an escalator in his contract and is scheduled to make $1.46 million in 2007.
If Graham comes aboard, that escalator could be Anderson's ticket out of town.

– There are unconfirmed reports Green Bay running back Ahman Green might visit the Raiders.

– When Travis Henry comes free from Tennessee after the Titans fail to pay an $8.3 million roster bonus, the Raiders ought to be on the phone.

What the hell kind of performance incentive did Courtney Anderson reach that was worth a mill and a half?
